@user12986714 Yes, theoretically, that's possible, and not toooo difficult. However, before people put work into automatically adding things to the watch and blacklists, I'd rather see work put into removing things from the blacklists. People are way to concentrated on getting things onto the blacklists, while thinking very little about removing them.

As my point has been whenever this sort of subject has come up: improve management of the entries we already have, then we can look at being more aggressive at getting things onto the blacklist, or even have a gray list.

content is what's displayed in chat and includes having been processed from Markdown into HTML. content_source is the Markdown. That matters for things like regular expressions, where the content can have characters which would be recognized as Markdown and changed.

i.e. we make a potentially-unnecessary HTTP request for every command, which is a LOT better than a probably-unnecessary request for every single chat message

If we're doing that, we might as well strip out the command name too, so the command function receives just the argument string

actually, we could probably even do that parsing with the same lazy trick ChatExchange uses to fetch the content_source in the first place

In order to get the plain-text Markdown message (aka content_source) we have to make a separate request (to https://chat.<server>.com/message/<id>/history)

That extra HTTP request isn't an issue when we need the content_source, but Smokey listens in dozens of high-traffic rooms, so fetching the plaintext for every message would be very costly.

Now, ChatExchange does some magic: the first time you access the content_source field on a message object (or another field which requires scraping the history page), it goes behind your back and automatically makes that HTTP request. That's convenient, but it means we need to keep an eye on when we call content_source, since it's actually an HTTP request and not just a straightforward variable access.

@NobodyNada This also has been known to cause bugs on occasion. For example, if the message is edited or deleted between parsing the command and accessing content_source, then you can end up with weird problems since content and content_source correspond to different text
