@Undo / @ArtOfCode wanted to poke y'all, I just removed the line that sanitizes :code out of params because it was commented as referring to the SE API auth code, which MS no longer handles. However, it looks like :code also refers to the 2fa codes for MS. Do either of you know if that's sanitized out elsewhere or if I should revert that change?

@Mast do you mean when are my system upgrades completed? Well, I fubar’d the in place Ubuntu distribution upgrade process already once and have spent the better part of an hour and a half restoring from a full disk image I took
Rule #1 of upgrades: always have backups
then i’ll redo the upgrade process again
I accidentally hit ctrl+c
so, it broke the upgrade process right at the end
so full disk restore and try again
THANKFULLY i haven’t used my computer for anything today since the backup was taken so there’s no new data, etc. there that’d get lost.
i did the backup overnight (8 hours to take a full disk backup, I have a ton of crap on disk >.<) and i’m glad I did
read speed from the backup disk (2TB USB 3.0 external spinnny disk drive) is at 11GB/min which is really good. the write speed is slower hence the 8 hour backup creation time
but restore takes ~ 1.5 hours which is good considering there’s 856GB of data in use on the disk heh

@ThomasWard I don't have access to the full DB, it's just you Undo and Art

ah but i need you for the redis part :p

Oh huh lets see
What input do you want? Deploying redis shouldn't be bad at all, the public redis dump needs no sanitation, just drop it in and it'll work.
The big issue with being able to spin up another MS is getting all the SD instances to talk to it and re distributing SD tokens, api keys, etc

@Daniil IIRC if you brew install carthage && git clone https://github.com/NobodyNada/READi && cd READi && carthage update, then the provided Xcode project should just work

@thesecretmaster not sure if there was any odd things you had to do to make it work :p
’cause i know Redis was kind of your thing :P

Naw, should work out of the box

nice
no special access restricts other than localhost only right?
(i.e. default Redis)

Might need to install from source if there's a stupidly old version in the repositories

oh good the full disk restore was successful

7:40 PM
Yeah default redis should work
The only thing that requires special config is /search_fast

@thesecretmaster yeah that makes sense. I deploy all my redis as 20.04 now though and that has a pretty recent version. but i think we’re on 18.04 on that box so it’s got old-ish

But I think that's pretty close to obsolete

yeah makes sense

@thesecretmaster Maybe we can keep it for a while just for comparison with search_st
So to be sure we are actually improving performance

Well search fast was never fully functional in the first place

7:42 PM
heh

@thesecretmaster Neither is mine :-P

And nobody uses it (0 hits in the last week)

well attempt to upgrade system #2 now
note to self DO NOT PRESS ctrl+c EVER at this process

Although I may have a different attempt at search performance improvements coming down the pipe

well i am glad I have a fast connection heh

@NobodyNada How good is the app? Is it even worth installing?

17 hours ago, by NobodyNada
note that it was only a prototype and I haven't been maintaining it for several years, there's no guarantee that it will work at all
17 hours ago, by NobodyNada
Also it eats your battery

so probably not worth installing :P

It allows you to see MS reports, flag them as spam, and talk in CHQ, so if you participate in CHQ primarily from mobile, it might be worthwhile assuming it works at all

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer (1): Perl Extract URI from site ✏️ by Salway on stackoverflow.com
fp- feedback received

The battery issue is because MS websockets are terrible on mobile (mainly because the frequent heartbeats don't let the radios go to sleep). The next step in development is writing a server that proxies the MS websocket over APNS or something, but that's a fair bit of work and then I have to host it too, so I just haven't gotten around to that yet
and so far I've been holding out for Swift to get async/await before I do much more server-side development
so that's why I haven't gotten around to improving READi for a while

7:57 PM
if Swift ever gets async/await

@ThomasWard the devs are releasing a concurrency design document within the next few weeks, so...
Hopefully by Swift 6

> within the next few weeks
was that said before COVID or recently :p
just wondering :p

@ThomasWard just a few days ago, actually

@NobodyNada Well, maybe pthread

@NobodyNada nice

8:01 PM
@ThomasWard yeah. I've been waiting for async/await for like 4 years though...so I'm not getting my hopes up just yet

:P
it took them four years to create a concurrency design doc for this so i mean

iBug/Sandy: Executing automatic scheduled reboot.

@user12986714 you can already write concurrent code through Swift with libraries like pthread or Dispatch; what's coming soon is a formal concurrency model and first-party language support for asynchronous code
So most of my projects involving networking and/or server-side code have been on-hold for a couple years because 1) they'll be way easier to write once async/await is out, and 2) if I write them now I just have to rewrite them for async/await anyway

@ThomasWard Ceterum autem censeo Carthaginem esse delendam

?
what does Carthage have to do with anything

8:07 PM
Isn't that the one deemed not worth installing?

@JohnDvorak it's a dependency manager used by READi, which is what's deemed not worth installing

... ah
so it should be destroyed, shouldn't it?

@JohnDvorak Yes, probably; considering that Swift Package Manager is so much easier to deal with
