@Mast That's close, but the [\W_]*+something should be what's contained in the optional non-capturing groups, rather than just the "something". So, that would look like: contact(?:[\W_]*+a)?(?:[\W_]*+reliable)?[\W_]*+hacker. Basically, what you're making optional is the characters between the previous word and the word you want optional. However, both versions have only 4 matches on MS, so don't, quite, qualify for the blacklist.

I understand the benefits of putting the whitespace detection in the optional part, that does make sense.
Will do.
With your suggested alternative I'm still at 8, are you counting differently than I am?

@Mast yes, but with the word boundary anchors it's 4

@Mast Your search is missing the bookending \b at the start and end of the regex. A more accurate search would be:

Right.
I've been doing this all wrong before, I see.
Watchlist and blacklist-keyword list have \b by default, metasmoke doesn't have this by default so I should've included that in my searches.
Now I'm going to figure out what happens to the other 4 hits.

8:40 AM
@Mast Actually, from what I've been seeing you've been doing a good job.
The \b bookending is something that trips all of us up.

@Makyen I'm assuming the bookending is done for major performance gain?

@Mast It's a significant performance gain for many things. It's a performance hit for some things, depending on how they are written. The main thing is that when people are writing most regexes to add to the watchlist and keyword blacklist they are really thinking about what words they are going to detect, rather than all the other things that might match the text when it is looking within words.
Or at least that's been my assumption. Basically, that's the way it was prior to me joining the project.
Here's a bookmarklet which will create a watchlist or keyword-blacklist search on MS from the regular expression text you have selected (Code to get the selection text is modified from Tim Down's answer to "Get the Highlighted/Selected text"):
javascript:(function(){
    /* The code to get the selected text on multiple platforms is from an [answer to "Get the Highlighted/Selected text"](stackoverflow.com/a/5379408) copyright by Tim Down and is under a [CC BY-SA 3.0 license](creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/legalcode). It has been modified to use let/const instead of var. */
    let text = "";
    const activeEl = document.activeElement;
    const activeElTagName = activeEl ? activeEl.tagName.toLowerCase() : null;

Naturally, I've been doing that by hand so far.
Thanks.

@Mast np. Yeah, I finally got tired of doing it by hand, particularly now that we can have one search that searches (as an OR) in all of titles, bodies, and usernames.

user435118
@NobodyNada Glorfindel used it to feedback yesterday. How exactly do I build it?

8:53 AM
@Makyen Yes, quite neat to have something that automatically fills the fields with the right options and correct wrappers.

user435118
@Makyen Actually it does qualify and there is no requirement of 5 for a keyword blacklist and only looking at it I do think it's only used in spam.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Post is mostly images (13): How to get rid of ad.doubleclick.net malware? by Freshly on security.SE

@Mast I tend to be more conservative about putting things on the blacklists. In general, my preference is for something to be on the watchlist for a while first, as there are often times when we get hits which were not expected. Having something on the watchlist for a while allows us to get some data and verify that there's not something which we didn't think of which causes it to detect a bunch of FP.
Such things can easily be missed when the main thing we test against when developing the regex/detection is the data on MS, because that data has a heavy bias towards things which are TP. In other words, there are 260k posts on MS, with 64% TP, whereas there are > 20M questions on SO, and that's just questions and only SO.
Obviously, if we're in the middle of getting a bunch of similar spam, the desire to have something on the watchlist for a while first will largely go out the window and we just fix it later, if needed. But, under most circumstances, I'd prefer that something we add go on the watchlist first.
!!/approve 4443

9:34 AM
@Makyen Ok, that makes sense.
I had the situation in reverse a while back, putting something on the watchlist and being notified it should go directly to the blacklist.

sdc reject 4330 "Qualifies for a blacklist"

tpu- feedback received

@Mast Yeah, I can understand that point of view, particularly at that time. At that time, there had been a noticeable amount of similar spam come in over a couple/few days which matched the regex. In such situations, it's reasonable to take the risk of putting something that's looks like it's not too generic on the blacklist without some time on the watchlist.
The detections on that one were all within what was the prior few days, unlike the reliable hacker regex, which doesn't have many recent detections. That doesn't mean that it's not useful to have it, just that there's significantly less urgency.

Potentially bad keyword in answer - Position 0-32: Blockchainnexperts@gmail dot com

@Daniil IIUC the [\W_]*+ after gmail should be part of the next optional group, correct?
(?:[\W_]*+(?:at[\W_]*+)?gmail(?:[\W_]*+(?:dot[\W_]*+)?com)?)?

user435118
@Mast I just used the standard email obfuscation level 1 RegEx. Seems fine to me.

@Daniil Ok, apparently not everyone has the same standard.

user435118
@Mast Huh, my bad I guess.

sdc watch-force Blockchainnexperts(?:[\W_]*+(?:at[\W_]*+)?gmail(?:[\W_]*+(?:dot[\W_]*+)?com)?)?

Don't think SD will take multi-line.

@Daniil That pattern is probably too broad, refusing to commit.
