21:16
@Makyen So they can be super pinged
21:34
@Undo Unicode? Unicode.
@ArtOfCode Most certainly some unicode/encoding fun
Just weird that GitHub's API is doing this, seems like something they'd have figured out
has anyone made shouldiblameunicode.com yet
so... in your screenshot of the file on GH, that shows the replacement char
wonder if that's connected
@ArtOfCode Shows in my terminal too; I think it's just 0xc4 is unprintable
21:39
but vim into the file and it reads Ä as it should
Aye, for me too
so fact (a): terminal doesn't handle Ä very well; may or may not be connected
@Daniil I'd prefer to have SD perform the ping. A) Using moderator powers doesn't feel all that appropriate for something that's not an immediate need, particularly when the person being pinged wasn't aware we might do so B) that requires a moderator to be watching and perform the super ping. C) It doesn't require any human intervention to just have SD perform the ping.
certainly looks like either git or github is mishandling this
My money is on GitHub, because I can clone my repo on another machine and the file is correct
21:43
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad asn for hostname in answer (1): Displaying Windows command prompt output and redirecting it to a file by P M on stackoverflow.com
and BF EF BD back from the API on mine too
For my purposes I can deal with it, kind of, but still pretty ew
seems that file is literally the replacement character
@ArtOfCode After it gets through the API it is
21:44
might even be before
But they're clearly storing it as 0xc4 in the actual Git repo
Because I can clone it and it's still 0xc4
user435118
@Makyen But SD can’t perform the ping
or at some point between the repo and the web tier, anyway, since it displays as replacement in the web UI too
user435118
The person isn’t pingable
@ArtOfCode ah, yeah, it is
Which makes sense because the page is probably UTF8 encoded
Another datapoint - the JSON api that returns it b64-encoded:
~/github-binary-api-problem(master) » curl \
-H "Accept: application/vnd.github.v3+object" \
api.github.com/repos/Undo1/github-binary-api-problem/contents/…
{
  "name": "c4-createdfromfilesystem",
  "path": "c4-createdfromfilesystem",
  "sha": "ef6080906700f3f3cdac7d60341a5de7b5da5581",
  "size": 1,
  "url": "https://api.github.com/repos/Undo1/github-binary-api-problem/contents/c4-createdfromfilesystem?ref=master",
  "html_url": "https://github.com/Undo1/github-binary-api-problem/blob/master/c4-createdfromfilesystem",
Note the size field. The content field decodes to the 3-byte replacement sequence
21:47
@Daniil That's incorrect. Anyone can ping someone as long as the person being pinged has ever posted a message in the room.
@Undo likewise the git link
@Undo curl https://api.github.com/repos/ArtOfCode-/api-test/git/blobs/ef6080906700f3f3cdac7d60341a5de7b5da5581 | jq -r '.content' | base64 --decode
plausible workaround
Ah, the blobs api
Yeah that might be way better
the 77+9 is the replacement character b64-encoded, but if you follow the _links.git field and b64 decode that content, it's correct
b64 is xA==
Perfect
I know that’s right
fp- feedback received
user435118
21:59
@Makyen Nope, only if they have been in the room the past 7 days
@ArtOfCode Want to write that up as an answer?
@Daniil No, that's only partially correct. IIRC, for an @ ping, the user must either be in the room currently, or have posted a message and have been in the room in the last 7 days. If you make a direct reply to a message, then the author of the message is always pinged, regardless of how long it's been.

naa- feedback received
user435118
@Makyen I know. So what are you suggesting?
22:15
@Daniil If SD can't ping, then have SD post a reply to the most recent message from the user. However, that should probably only be done once in a while if the user has set a !!/notify and there are lots of reports.
user435118
@Makyen Even for one report, the user has requested a notify so honour that.
@Daniil But, their choice to not be in the room is, potentially, impacting SD's ability to post other messages (i.e. a message is consumed by the reply, and contributes to rate limiting). We don't want a situation where we end up doubling the number of messages SD has to post during a time when there's a large amount of spam for a particular site.
user435118
@Makyen Then check the backlog and if it’s 0 have a notify or get another bot to notify them
Question as always: what problem does this solve? Given that there's always at least one mod in here who can superping if necessary, do we really need the extra complexity and messages?
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Link at beginning of answer (33): How to log into Facebook without the Facebook app? by Ufuoma Harrison on stackoverflow.com
22:25
@Daniil There are a variety of possible options. Another concern is that people are probably going to get annoyed if there are a lot of extra messages just to ping someone that has an !!/notify.
@ArtOfCode Other than for the circumstance where the user is being pinged for an FP on an autoflagged post, I don't really see a need to keep pinging someone who has allowed themselves to become un @ pingable.
user435118
@ArtOfCode Currently it’s me doing all the superpinging
The question is why do it, other than for an FP on autoflagged post?
user435118
Because of a notify request as well
tpu- feedback received
That the person is no longer pingable is something they have chosen. At most, send them one ping telling them they are no longer pingable and let them resolve it by entering the room.
user435118
22:30
We honour their request of a notify
@SmokeDetector k SEO-spam; question is specifically about logging in using the Facebook SDK
@Daniil Yes, which is predicated upon the capabilities of the chat system. If there's an issue, then let's change the documentation to be specific that it's just an @ ping and they are responsible for remaining pingable.
that
it ain't on us to keep pinging people beyond reasonable efforts
which making someone do it manually definitely isn't
user435118
Fine, add that to the wiki but I’m still superpinging
OTOH, I do care about pinging people for FP/NAA feedback on an autoflagged post, because it impacts the post and the author of that post.
