Hey @Makyen I see you mentioned here that the MS search is not reflective of what an actual watch / black list entry would catch. Could you explain to me what would need to change to align the way Smokey analyzes posts with MS?

4:21 PM
@thesecretmaster On the MS search page, it would be helpful to have an additional entry line which is something like "any of Body, Title, or Username" (regexes/text entered match in any of those fields), with an additional checkbox (normally checked) which is something like "use bookending \b", or, probably better, "watch/blacklisted keyword". The primary difference is that most of the lists we use search in all of bodies, titles and usernames, which currently means making 3 different searches in MS.
It would be much more convenient to only have to make a single search and not need to manually combine/consider the results from three different searches. Currently, I routinely have three tabs open in order to see the results of a search in each of those three fields. An alternative would be to have a checkbox for each text entry criteria which allowed it to be applied as an OR instead of an AND.
The checkbox for "watch/blacklisted keyword" is because the watchlist and keyword-blacklist both set the s flag, and place \b before and after all entries. It would be quite helpful to be able to have a setting where the regular expression doesn't need to be wrapped by the user in (?s:\b<regex here>\b) in order to closely match what the watchlist and keyword blacklist do.
I'd want the setting as a checkbox, because the blacklisted websites list doesn't use either of those settings, but does search over bodies, titles, and usernames.

I recall there was some issue a while back about regex engines in the DB vs in python. Has that since been resolved?

@ArtOfCode Can you explain this commit to me? Why doesn't :body get the %%?

@thesecretmaster what's the current state of that code?
i.e. is that commit current or has it been superseded

Still there

@thesecretmaster then it's probably because the body field gets searched through a fulltext index instead of via LIKE or REGEX

@Makyen Not entirely sure I follow the stuff about (?s:\b<regex>\b) but just created an OR search PR.

@thesecretmaster Yeah, fortunately, the conversion to using MariaDB gave MS PCRE base regexes, which are a close approximation of what's available from the Phyon regex package. Prior to that change, we had some hacky text substitutions providing a few common features we were using, but, as is to be expected, the implementation was brittle and didn't handle all cases.

@ArtOfCode Do you happen to know if the special column on domain_tags is just for AS tags, or has other uses as well?

pretty sure it's just AS
nothing stopping it being used for other things, though

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Repeating words in title (67): ANSWERED ANSWERED ANSWERED ANSWERED ANSWERED ✏️ by dmpokuaev on stackoverflow.com

@thesecretmaster The watchlist and keyword blacklist use r'(?is)(?:^|\b|(?w:\b))(?:{})(?:\b|(?w:\b)|$)'.format("|".join(GlobalVars.watched_keywords.keys())) to join all of the entries into one large regex. What that does, effectively, is set the s` and i flags and then place a \b at the start and a \b at the end of the regex.
The regex that's used is a bit more complicated that just \b, because A) the regex package doesn't see the start and end of the string as a \b transition if the adjoining character is a non-word character; and B) we also use the Unicode based \b as a separator, which matches significantly more character-to-character transitions, and is most useful for non-Latin based languages.

@Makyen Good luck in the SO election. You have always been very helpful to me and have very good communication skills :)

@Daniil Thank you. :)

@Makyen If you do get elected will you still be as active in Charcoal?

9:10 PM
@Daniil I do not plan to dramatically reduce my contributions here as a result of being elected, if I am. There may be a reduction, to an extent. The actual impact isn't something I can really say, just due to not knowing what it will be. Being an SO moderator does commit some of my time. What things will be impacted by that time and what the extent will be is something I'll just have to see how it goes.

@Daniil Sounds great. I like projects. Although your contributions to this site will be missed.

@Dharman I’m not leaving yet :) It’s not really a project but more like another community I guess. I’ll try both and see which one I like more. Both heavily appeal to me
