@Daniil This one the moderator handled prior to seeing my custom flag with the context of the multiple spam posts across multiple sites and the sock-puppet account. The spammer was more careful about their primary SO account, so the extent of the problem wasn't obvious, and the spammer had other good contributions on SO.
I agree that someone could have edited out the promotion of the user's company in this post. In fact, that might have been the choice I would make if the only spam which the user had posted were the two on SO. OTOH, the fact that the other post was clearly spam would have mitigated against that. However, even without that, your spam flag should not have been declined.
A) The spam flag's explicit description includes "does not disclose the author's affiliation". A flag should never be declined when the user is following the instructions in the site's UI. OTOH, it would have been reasonable to "dispute" the flag.
B) It's not incumbent on users, especially users who don't have full editing privileges, to make such edits. It's good if experienced users, who also have full edit privileges, choose to make an evaluation of the situation and decide that the offense doesn't really require the intervention of a moderator. But, that's something users are not required to do.
If the user doesn't want to make that edit, and expose themselves to the OP, then it's reasonable for them to raise a flag. However, a custom mod-flag would be better in that situation.
Basically, the take-away for you from this is that moderators often don't see the cross-SE context which we see in here. If a situation is unclear, or requires context from more than one site, then a custom mod-flag is often the better choice.

11:48 AM
@Daniil I'm seriously considering it. There was a considerable portion of the last year when I would have said "hard no". However, SE's more recent actions have relaxed my position on that, so the overall situation with SE and its relationship with moderators, the community, and users in general is something I need to think about.
Stepping up to be a moderator entails a lot of responsibility to other people (i.e. the community). While I know I can handle it, and believe I'd do a good job, at least to the best of my ability, I'm unsure if I want to make that commitment and take on that responsibility. In addition, being a moderator is a significant commitment in time and effort, which I need look at if I want to commit to.

user435118
@Makyen If you nominate, you have one of my three votes :) I personally wouldn't want to be an SO moderator. Whilst I enjoy with helping out in user-level moderation (closing/flagging), SO is too big for me and is a bit too over-whelming

Question: on ELL.SE, we have a user who repeatedly evades question bans by creating a new account. The questions are on-topic but low quality. Would it make sense to have Smokey watch for a specific pattern in the user's questions? I can convince the other mods to mark spam flags as helpful, and even if someone FPs the post, I'm still notified for those posts (through this project).

ELL has the most filled LQP queue I've seen on a medium-sized site

That said, if we are going to do that, any detections for it need to go in as a new, experimental, reason, locked to 1 weight

4:27 PM
@ArtOfCode thanks. I do have to think a bit more about the pattern; sometimes they mention the book "history of spiritualism", sometimes they only quote a part of it
So it might be easier for me to have another script monitor new questions on ELL.SE and check the contents against the entire body of that book, and use my own credentials to cast a delete vote.
I just want to know what the options are so I can figure out what the best solution is :)

@Daniil let me tell you what I did for this project: meta.stackexchange.com/a/318926/295232
I have a Java program running on my server which monitors several 'sources', one of which is the metasmoke WebSocket.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer (1): Looking for an image compression tool by Divya Mishra on stackoverflow.com

Not sure if you know about WebSockets, but they're a technology to allow servers to send messages to clients (instead of the other way around, which is the traditional direction).
Stack Exchange is full of WebSockets, e.g. the live update of post scores, and new/edited questions in the question list
Even this very chat is real-time thanks to WebSockets.

I guess you could write a userscript for that very page, and in local storage keep track of which posts you 'handled' or not.
Perhaps by checking feedback records?
saves you the trouble of bookkeeping

user435118
True, good idea. Would it be complicated?

That, plus perhaps a local storage containing the date of your last refresh.
I mean a way to mark all posts older than <date X> as handled.

user435118
Maybe highlight all posts with no feedback from me?

that should be rather easy - iterate over all posts, check adjacent DOM elements and apply styling
My first Charcoal userscript, AIM, more or less started that way

user435118
5:44 PM
Sounds complicated for me :)

(though it needed a few API calls to metasmoke)
@Daniil I can imagine. When I was your age, I was still dabbling in BASIC.

user435118
Ill probably finish my FIRE additional functionality userscript first

sure, taking small steps and 'celebrating' each achievement is the way to go
taking on a large project at once is doomed to fail
AIM originally only indicated if you autoflagged, nothing else
the number of autoflags, feedback, and graying out deleted posts came much later
up to a point where JF enhanced the script so much that it took a week for me to figure out how the new structure worked
(mainly because I was too embarrassed to ask; after all, I considered myself relatively proficient in JavaScript)

Who's JF?

haven't seen them recently
I should have said 'J F'

@Glorfindel Never heard of them, quite a few of dev's have abandoned us

@Daniil I'm very surprised at that. At least in the USA, if your account was deleted for the reason yours was , then it would be illegal for them to have kept any records. However, I'm not sure of the actual requirements of the applicable laws in your jurisdiction. Note that in the USA the issue would not have actually existed for you specifically, at that time, due to different requirements.

@Daniil Just FYI: I have code that does much of what you've described above for MS: makes the feedback and comment indicators "live" on such lists of MS posts, hides/shows posts where you've given feedback or that are otherwise "complete", etc. My intent is to put much of that into MS as standard features. @Daniil Hopefully not long

@Makyen Any rough timeframe? A week? A month? ...

@Daniil 6-8 :P

@Makyen COPPA protects PII like email addresses, but I don't think that would include stuff like post contents

@Glorfindel FireAlarm could do that pretty easily. I haven't touched it for a long time, but it should just take a little bit of config (creds, sites, chatrooms, etc) to get it up and running

@NobodyNada As far as I know, it doesn't cover the actual contents of the post. What I understood it to broadly cover was any information about the user, which includes the connection between the post and the user. Frankly, I'd really have to re-read the law.

@ArtOfCode 6-8 what?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially problematic ns configuration in answer (1): Two custom Wordpress post types and querying with ACF relationship by Joeri Abbo on stackoverflow.com

@Makyen it would be illegal for them to have retained any PII, including a username, but it's fine to keep all the posts associated with an account as long as the account doesn't contain anything identifying. If you do that, it's relatively trivial to reassign the posts at some point - you do have to just take the user's word that it's their posts, because you necessarily have no way of verifying, but the technicality is not difficult.

@NobodyNada thanks. I just successfully reconfigured one of my other bots to ping ELL mods in our mod room if a suspicious post arrives, that's good enough for now.

@Glorfindel 👍

If the detection is accurate enough, it's just a small step to outright delete those posts (and ping the mods to double-check, of course).
(I do realize the dangers in automated deletion, but if SpamRam isn't effective enough and the deletion can easily be reversed, I'm fine with it.)

@Glorfindel Ah cool, what bot?

@ArtOfCode That's probably a reasonable way to look at it. I agree that it's not difficult from a technical standpoint. meh. It's really SE's issue and they trust their lawyers, even if I don't. :;

@ArtOfCode I had to provide my user ID for reattachment, I wondered if I can get any deleted users post back :P

But they did send me an email on that sad was it Monday or Tuesday? day when I was destroyed with my ID

@Daniil the one using WebSockets ... not published yet, the source code is quite a mess

@Daniil Was it more than just the user numbers that are used on each each site and your network account (i.e. more than the information that was public)?

user435118
@Makyen It was just the user number for each site I wanted posts back

user435118
I requested: Travel, ELL, MSE, SO, Meta.Travel (and was given all of them)

user435118
I nearly didn't find my SO ID though (only because I posted in chat once before)

@Daniil Ah, so, totally public information, which could have been obtained by anyone, with some work.

user435118
@Makyen Yep. On Travel it was easy, just search one of my many messages in chat. Any internet beginner could do it

@Glorfindel Is there an easy way to build a bot/maybe this bot already exists that monitors selected posts for any activity?

@Daniil It should also have been available from archive.org. Or, at least, I've generally found a copy of most questions on archive.org.

@Daniil easy, no. WebSockets would work: there's a websocket for all activity on an entire Q&A: meta.stackexchange.com/a/218355/295232
But I'm not sure if it triggers on all things, e.g. reopening a question.

user435118
Is there a bot that is already built for this that I can just fork?

It would've been nice if the new Follow Posts function would have an API equivalent, but no.
@Daniil perhaps. The folks at SOBotics have written so many of them, no idea what they're capable of.

user435118
There is a bot: GenericBot that can track a post for suggested edits etc.

8:57 PM
sounds good

@Glorfindel It definitely triggers on close. I don't recall testing for reopen or undelete.
