[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer (1): How to update aws elasticsearch access policy from serverless.yaml configuration? by JoBu on stackoverflow.com (@user12986714)
@Daniil sounds feasible; let me check with the other team admins
user435118
@tripleee Ok, thanks for checking
user435118
@tripleee What are you, are you an admin?
fp- feedback received
@Daniil yeah, there is a listing at charcoal-se.org/pings/#more-privileges
user435118
11:13
I was wondering what the guidance is to become a RO, as far as I can see there is nothing on the wiki about that, unless I am missing something?
many of the privileges are ad hoc, meaning it basically only happens when there is a need, and then we explore the available options
user435118
Ok
core is really subject to the same sort of admin discretion too
though of course there isn't any situation where there is any pressure to add people
user435118
So Core, Admin etc. is only granted when there is a shortage of Admins/Core users?
@Daniil here's the thing. I believe we said "wait a couple weeks", and it's been... 12 days, by my count. Privileges aren't there to be a challenge or a promotion; they're there because either folks deserve them, or because it'd be useful, or because it's a pain to keep approving PRs, or because we're short of people...
11:23
well there is never going to be a "shortage" of core users but yeah, that's the gist of it
user435118
@ArtOfCode So is that a no? :)
best advice I can offer is that aiming to get privileges for the sake of getting privileges is... not a good way of working
user435118
I'm not aiming to get privileges for the sake of getting privileges, imo I met the core requirements so I asked
user435118
No harm in asking
11:25
if you're here for the shinies... eh, I can understand that, but the best way of working is to be here because you want to get rid of spam, and if you happen to collect privileges along the way, wunderbar
user435118
What do you mean by shinies?
@Daniil that's just it: I can't read minds - so it's less about what you know you're here for, and more about how it comes across
user435118
Oh, sorry it came across like that. I am known to be a bit pushy
and... asking for privs, getting told to ask again in two weeks, and waiting not-even-that-long is... not the best way of coming across :)
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Repeating characters in answer (81): Connosco ou Conosco? Qual é a forma correta de se escrever? by DFBVNM on portuguese.SE
11:27
"symbols of status" might be a good translation of "shinies"
tpu- feedback received
@tripleee yeah, status symbols, rank, big red buttons, toys and trinkets -- all shinies
access to Stuff in SD and metasmoke -- shinies
user435118
@ArtOfCode I thought it had been two weeks, didn't think you meant two weeks literally
user435118
e.g. 12/13/14/15 days etc.
I get that; it's the way I started participating here, but if that's the draw-in, then we ideally want it to be "come for the shinies, stay because we're good at nuking spam and you enjoy it"
11:29
[ SmokeDetector ] SmokeDetector started at rev 5b720d7 (SmokeDetector: Auto blacklist of 6315383658 by tripleee) (running on teward/Osiris, Python 3.6.9)
Restart: API quota is 13404.
@Daniil we didn't -- but think about how it comes across. You show up a couple weeks ago after a long absence (not your fault, I know), ask for privileges almost immediately. You get told to wait a couple weeks. 12 days later, you ask again. It's less about the two weeks, more about whether it feels like you're in it for the right reasons; giving that impression is super important, whether you just want the shiny or you want it because NUKE THE SPAM
so -- take that as friendly advice
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in answer, blacklisted website in answer, potentially bad keyword in answer (180): How old is Mai in Next Gen? by teddypoop on scifi.SE
I'm gonna say no to core right now, but your activity is looking good for the past couple weeks and we appreciate folks who can lend us that activity. Let's give it a little while longer - I won't specify a time period this time :) then we can review it again soon
11:34
and bear in mind that whatever your motivation, if you can lend that activity and help us in good ole spam-killing... you will pick up privileges along the way
I came for the shinies and the buttons; there's no shame in it, gamification is basically what makes all of SE work... but I stayed because we're good at this, and then I found myself being project director, somehow.
user435118
Originally I didn't come for spam (for something else) but now I like it and I come for spam :)
Best way of doing it :)
user435118
My activity will go down a lot when lockdown ends unfortunately
I've put a note in my calendar to remind me to review again Soon (tm)

I have an idea of a SD userscript, run a keyword/website through it, it checks whether it is already caught, if not it watches it and checks the number of results on MS to see if a blacklist is necessary. Also searches SE for any FP's
user435118
Unless that already exists...
Halflife was created to do something like that but it's kind of jammed in a place where those parts are a bit tricky to resurrect
an unexpected but useful side effect of having Halflife report to chat is that it can search its own chat transcript but I haven't integrated those parts, I just have them running on the command line for myself
I'm thinking about rigging Halflife to submit watches on its own but I haven't had much time to work on it recently
user435118
Oh cool, I added it to my starred rooms
and the code is so fugly I hesitate to ask anyone to help out
user435118
12:15
Language?
Python
user435118
I could help if you dare to ask :)
github.com/Charcoal-SE/PulseMonitor is the chat client (less horrible on the whole); github.com/Charcoal-SE/halflife is the back end
user435118
I think the way it reports the results needs some work
user435118
It's kinda long
12:18
one useful refactoring which should not be too hard to do is to replace the hard-coded service in the chat client with a configurable set of services so that I could run the stable ugly code in parallel with an experimental, hopefully more modular replacement
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Link at end of answer (60): Fixing sticky keyboard keys by keloon on superuser.com

user435118

I don't recall seeing one, but it will turn up in your global inbox if it remains unread for 15 minutes (IIRC)
and there will be an (*) indicator in the browser tab where you have an unread notification
user435118
Really strange ping noise
did you recently install a userscript? several of them have pretty annoying default noises
user435118
Iirc it came from SmokeDetector
user435118

user435118

user435118

thankfully it lets you configure the sound it plays, the configuration is in a slightly weird place though
user435118
Where do you configure it?
I don't think I have it installed after the latest browser cycle
but there would be a "spamtracker: on" indicator to the right of the box where I am typing this, and you could click that to get a configuration dialog IIRC
user435118
12:28

@AdrianMole You mentioned in SOCVR that you can more-or-less understand this post. Are there any keywords in there we should be watching for? Normally, I can pick some out of Google Translate, but this post isn't really yielding anything obvious for me.
@user12986714 I don't have a problem with you running this command, but you doing so (particularly more than once) implies you think there might be a problem so... Do you think there's an issue that should be addressed?
@Makyen Nope but you are discussing there is a problem in MS
@Makyen Also that my access to MS became incredibly slow
@user12986714 Yep. It appears that the characters used in the post I linked above are outside the set of characters which are currently able to be stored in the fields used for the post within the database on MS (probably either the post body and/or username). This resulted in no record of the post being created. Undo and ArtOfCode have been informed and are working on it.
@user12986714 That's likely because Undo is investigating and resolving the logging issue, or some other issue that was noticed. It's likely that MS will be somewhat degraded, and potentially rebooted, during this time.

@Makyen I can't actually read Thai (I'm very slowly learning to read/write Lao, which has some similarity). But what I can do quite well is to re-translate a Google translate (the grammatical structure of Thai is sufficiently complex to really baffle most online translation stuff). I can look through it, though, for the most likely rude words, if that would help - if you want them in Thai.
@AdrianMole can we just report any post with more than 10 non latin character in a row (without anything between them but space)
@AdrianMole Yeah, we'd want them so we can add them to SD's watchlist, or list of offensive words. Basically, that post was only caught because it was mostly in non-Latin characters. If the contents of the post lend itself to it, it would be nice to have additional criteria to find similar posts, or posts where that content is only a small portion.
It's also quite problematical, though, because Thai doesn't work in a simple sequence of fixed letters. And there's generally no spaces between words. So, for example, "milk" (in formal Thai) is นม and "tits" is หัวนม but most folks would just use the former for the latter. And the นม syllable occurs in many innocent words, too.
Thai written words consist of a sequence of syllables that comprise two or three letters, sometimes with added diacritical marks.
Hmmm... that does not sound like it would be easy to get keywords out of. Ideally, we'd want something a bit longer than นม, and which is unlikely to show up in innocent text. It sounds like it will be difficult. We don't need everything, and what we use doesn't have to be perfect, but having some additional criteria does help.

@Makyen Without wishing to enter into an online exchange of obscenities, what would be the sort of keywords most likely to be useful (in English)? As I said in my SOCVR post, many common obscenities in Thai are actually 'innocent' words used out of context; and many personal insults are very different from those in Western languages ("foot" is a very rude word in Thai).
