@thesecretmaster I'm interested in making a comment bot for meta stack overflow. Is your IPS version open source?
I'd be willing to host it and if necessary make adjustments to the source code to get it working. It'd be for pure archiving purposes. In light of this current discussion at MSO, I think that an archiving of all comments could provide crucial extra transparency and your IPS comment bot model seems to be almost tailor made to achieve that.
I ran the numbers and it looks like even posting every comment on MSO seems to very much stay within chat's rate limits and API quota limits. I've also gotten tentative approval to run something like this from a SO mod.
@Magisch If you do this, be sure to strictly comply with the CC BY-SA 3.0 license, including all required attribution.
@Magisch Yes, it's open source (on mobile, but I'll send you the GH link when I get back to a computer). Also, happy to help with hosting and/or modifications.
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad asn for hostname in answer, potentially problematic ns configuration in answer (2): Default image for homepage when shared in social media by Ashique on wordpress.SE
@Makyen I mean, even if I end up modifying it myself, all I'll pretty much have to do is strip out some extraneous parts. It'll still be 100% @thesecretmaster 's code.
a "all of this belongs to thesecretmaster under cc by sa 3.0" should suffice with source links
17:30
@Magisch I think @Makyen means the comment license, not my license to the code :P
Ahh
It's just an inline chat link in a SO chatroom
no license implication there as the chat inlining feature is CC BY SA compliant
also, it's the same platform
@thesecretmaster If you want to host it yourself, I can chime in some hosting costs, or if you don't, I can rent out my own hosting
as for the modifications, i'd pretty much just be stripping all the rating and feedback stuff, and turning the feed to meta.SO from IPS
@Magisch Juuuuust bear in mind the storage requirements for that
@Magisch I was thinking I could just put it on the same box as the IPS bots
17:32
Why? It wouldn't be saving the comments itself
You're dealing with significant volume there - I haven't run the numbers, but be prepared for it
just posting it to a chat room
Currently, IPSbot does store them to a DB. Easy to strip out, but in it's current state it would grow prettty fast.
The way this works is whenever a comment is posted, the bot posts a direct link to a chatroom, which bonfire automatically inlines
@thesecretmaster That box hasn't been the most stable, I thought.
17:33
Ah, gotcha. That should be okay, but you'll still need to keep an eye on rate limiting
Thats all it needs to be. Comments that get deleted don't get auto removed from chat
I've run the numbers, even with the most conservative assumptions on bloat, we're not looking at over 800 comments per day
Most days see 250-300 undeleted comments on weekdays and 100-150 on weekends. Even assuming 50% deleted comments (shog's estimate on main, where more get deleted, is 10%), thats nowhere near the 10000 per day api quota or any chat rate limits,
@Magisch Well, that's not how to think about the API quota. The bot polls the comment endpoint every n minutes, so that's how you'd calculate quota usage.
There's no global comment WS anyways, AFAIK
I've run numbers on comment distribution per weekday time of day, and no 1 hour window exceeds 30 comments per hour undeleted
again, even assuming 50% deleted, thats less then a comment per minute
@Magisch My numbers are saying 188/day undeleted in the last month; assuming a high 50% deletion rate, that's going on 400/day - still good on rate limits.
@ArtOfCode here's a listing of undeleted comments per weekday: data.stackexchange.com/meta.stackoverflow/query/1084087
over the last 1800 days
17:37
Nice
Although I'd also make sure that the mods are alright with it first.
And a listing for average comments per full hour per weekday data.stackexchange.com/meta.stackoverflow/query/1084110
in Discussion on question by Madara Uchiha: Should the mod team tighten up moderation on Meta comments? on Stack Overflow Chat, 19 mins ago, by Madara Uchiha
@Magisch Alright, you have a (tentative) greenlight. We're still waiting on a staff's reply, but I have at least one other moderator willing to give this a shot and keep an eye out. Regular disclaimers about bots (you should stay close to make sure nothing funky is happening, it may be shut down by mods if it goes haywire or tries to take over the world, etc.) apply.
@thesecretmaster How easy would it be to add a "delete comments over 30 days old" thing to it?
@ArtOfCode Medium challenging.
Not terrible though
I have no experience with ruby whatsoever so I'd probably just try to make it work with all the moving parts stripped out, but if y'all want to give it a go, any version works
17:40
Does the code sign up for the WS notification for each post/question, or is it polling the comments SE API endpoint?
Average 231 chars/comment, 188/day, very roughly 1.5 MB per month
@Makyen Polling the comments endpoint
re: comments, I'm more interested in using Heat Detector on MSO & MSE, but I failed to setup from the source miserably
So storage isn't even that bad
17:41
I'm not clear on api quota usage, but I think we're a lot below the limit there
like negligible tier
@ArtOfCode IPS is at 41mb over its lifetime, which is...
46529 comments
@Magisch That's going to depend on how often you poll.
@Makyen Polling frequency could be the same as IPSbot
No reason that needs to change
@Mithrandir not sure I have sobotics account... -_-
Maximum poll is every 9 seconds
17:42
IPS bot currently does every 2 minutes, IIRC.
Actually, the maximum, by the SE API rules, is 1/minute.
@thesecretmaster eeeeh, might be worth polling a little more often - moderation on SO is going to be quicker than IPS
@Makyen Is it? Huh, missed that
@ArtOfCode Yeah, you're not supposed to hit the same endpoint with the same parameters more than once per minute.
@AndrewT. ping Bhargav, I guess
@Mithrandir IPSbot runs once per minute
17:44
so at the max then
Hmmmm... This then lends itself to what to do about edited comments. Does the new version get re-posted in chat?
probably the best idea
IPSbot ignores comment edits. Changes would be medium annoying.
# of edited comments are negligible
probably not worth the effort if there is any though
If I'm poking the code, I'd prolly add it anyways, cuz it'd help ips as well.
@SmokeDetector fp
@NobodyNada Registered question as false positive.
actually, the 1/minute rule isn't enforced per se, but it's a strong recommendation

ugh...it really has been a while
@SmokeDetector poof
@Magisch You may also want to poke SOBotics, because they might be interested in a bot, on SO :P Beyond that, I can spin up an instance whenever.
17:53
Do you want this to run on the usual account
or should I make one
I was thinking that I should make another account. I would prefer to be the one who creates the account, because getting chat notif emails is kinda handy sometimes.
We'd also need to get the bot 20 rep somehow (suggested edits are prolly easiest), which is kinda annoying.
Wanna make a room on chat.SO and we can move over there?
@thesecretmaster yas
@EriktheOutgolfer True. It's not enforced. However, more requests will probably make it more likely to get a backoff response.
IIRC the reason for the recommendation is that API responses are cached for 1 minute, so hitting the same endpoint with the same parameters will always return an identical result until the cache expires

  Meta Stack Overflow Comment Archive

17:59
yes, there's a cache
@SmokeDetector Undisclosed affiliation. The user has posted about "zzBots" twice.
@EriktheOutgolfer The profile mentions the affiliation, that's probably the more important indicator.
the post doesn't
@thesecretmaster If possible, it would probably be beneficial to have the IPS and SO bots on different IP addresses. The backoff response is expected, and definitely enforced, to apply to all requests to the same endpoint, per IP address. Both bots will be accessing the same endpoint, but with different parameters. This will make backoff responses more common, and SE will expect them to be honored by both bots, regardless of which got the backoff.
Not complying with backoff can definitely get the IP blocked from the SE API for an unspecified period, which can be minutes to, at least, hours. It's probably...inconvenient to have the bots communicate backoff state between them, so separate IP addresses might be easier.

@Makyen I thought you could use up to 10 keys per IP and still be OK?
18:14
@thesecretmaster That would be nice. It's what I'd expect to be the case. Sometimes that seems sufficent. Unfortunately, my experience is that there are times when that hasn't appeared to apply. Unfortunately, I haven't tracked the issue I've seen down. It certainly doesn't matter once the rate limit block is active.
It's possible that what I've seen has resulted from issues arising from the interaction of multiple instances of multiple scripts, but the times I seen the problem, it hasn't appeared that way.
