I definitely agree that stability trumps the PCRE support in MariaDB, it's becoming less relevant anyway as we get access to other high-level tools like Blazer

but googling suggests that many many others have been extremely happy with Maria after upgrading from MySQL

and also MySQL is going to be the dead horse anyway as the development focuses on Maria going forward
