@Magisch Hi, what'S up?

9:08 AM
I did destroy the travel account, only leaves an other page full: stackexchange.com/users/1222778/loan-sydney?tab=accounts

we have no power against their network profile

You'd need a CM to destroy it completely, but given its age most likely not worth it.

but hey, aren't spam accounts almost always left "intact"?

The name and account info is spam, so I feel offended by it, it should go.

@iBug Usually, yes.

9:12 AM
@iBug Usually in first incident they're left intact; the deletion apply for repeated spam posts.

And spam accounts that are left alive can (and in my experience at times do) come back alive later, being seen as less 'spammy' because of an older join date.

as long as their posts get caught by Smokey it isn't an issue

@Willeke If you're interested, there was a discussion about destroying spam user accounts a couple days ago, including an SEDE query which might help you find more accounts. The discussion also links a Meta post about destroying spam users.

Another old but interesting: Flag abusive users?.

9:18 AM
@Mithrandir, I am with you, hit them before they can post.

but then again i go to unusual lengths to get rid of spam

I have seen groups of accounts on Y!A that build up with innocent posts till they had 400 or so accounts all beyond the safety measure levels, who then started to post spam in huge amounts. (All from the same spammer companies who bought them on the black hat sites.)

@iBug someone should take a job as a spammer and see what it's like from the inside...

@Willeke About "testing waters", what kind of things usually turned-around spammer accounts will do?

@Mithrandir Evil plan from outer space: Apply to be a pro-grade spammer and use your charcoal experience as a way to get into the door via counterintel.

I mean, I do know how to get past a lot of spam filters ;)

9:37 AM
Exactly. Expert domain knowledge on spam filtering cuts both ways

@TetsuyaYamamoto post some iffy post, have two interconnected accounts and see how fast the mods act, as we had on travel a few weeks back. Copy/pasting Q and A information from other sites.

@iBug rofl Hourly salary is not a spammer's choice at first place.

From the reactions on it, (left, partially hit or destroyed) the black hat masters will take an educated guess whether this site is a good one to post spam in bigger amounts and whether or not it is worth to farm accounts to sell to others.

... by quantity? $$$ / 1k posts or so?

@Willeke Our mission is in part to make stackexchange a very unattractive destination for such enterprise.

9:39 AM
What we learned is that they get paid by the posts that are still up by the time the pay master checks, cents per post.
About as much money as a handful of rice for a mornings work.

...I wonder if they're still getting paid for the 2014 posts I'm seeing on my "remove all spam from Medium" campaign.

The whole family had to work. Often we thought that the only 'real' payment was the use of the computer and internet outside the hours needed to post spam.

tpu- by Tetsuya Yamamoto

@Mithrandir, the spammers, no, the spamming companies only if they still use the websites.
Those 'people click and you get paid' sites are often not running for long, build and gone in weeks or months.

9:43 AM
Some of these sites have been in active spam use for 4 years or so now. I still see some of these.

Even worse if they spam on Youtube and such and the spam hunters report on both ends.

We got into the game of trying to get sites taken down a while ago too

The privately owned sites can run forever and some sites will run on even when the owner is gone.

I've tried reporting YouTube stuff before. Nothing came of it.

9:44 AM
youtube's flagging system is notoriously terrible and volume based

As far as I remember you can build up youtube reporting reputation, so the more accepted reports, the more likely they take action on your next report.

They wanted to build a whole program on that

@Willeke Additionally with privately registered domains, it may nearly impossible to take them down.

9:48 AM
But got so much public backlash they shelved it again

JAD
seems like the perfect way to increase copyright claims

My friend said this about YT reporting reputation: I'm not sure. Removal is manual (and the mods are pretty quick). Rep may help you hide things until a mod takes action

Youtube is a dumpster fire tbh

The thing that annoys me is that domain registrars and stuff refuse to take action. If they were more proactive about removing sites that are obvious spammers, spam would be a lot harder to get through.

9:52 AM
@Mithrandir Spend money to drive away customers? Why would that make business sense?

it'd make PR sense

That is the problem for us spam reporters, others earn from spam and will not get rid of it.

@Mithrandir What PR does a domain registrar need? (Other then not coming out in favor of SOPA publicly)

@Willeke The general motive is still always same: "increasing total views/site rank and earn money".

@Magisch "we care about the humans"

9:56 AM
but why?
Who cares about their domain registrar's PR?
I figure the factor is 1) price 2) availability and 3) absolutely nothing else

Well, I'm disinclined to use a service that has said "we don't care about spam"...

outside of tech nerds nobody even knows what a domain registrar is or does

All websites around here (EU) have to ask permission for cookies (again) and now they also ask whether you want personalized ads. I find those the most annoying and I can not understand why people would even want them.
That is targeted spam posted by the sites, aimed at you, so it seems interesting, trying to get you to spend more money than you can afford.
I'd rather have them show car ads to me, (no cars in my life) so I know I can and should ignore it.

advertisement is spam intrinsically, unless someone wants it

not Art, but I'm pretty sure the channel is ours, so we do what we want with it (within reasonable bounds)

@Magisch Yes
For Teams?

yes
I was thinking about it and all of these channel verify addresses aren't really real addresses they're just to join the channel - bypassing the system stack put in place to default channels to non public
s/channels/teams

It's designed for organizations that have a single email domain for everyone. Our only unifying attribute is that we all have metasmoke access, so that's the authentication method we want. It's basically poor man's SSO
(and it's not like anything breaks by doing that, and it doesn't cost anything, so not an issue)
