@iBug Yep. The blog links are spam :)

@JF yeeeah, that needs to be on later Ruby, cc @quartata. 2.3 has security and implementation flaws and is generally buggy. 2.4.1 minimum, or 2.5 if you feel like it (MS is on 2.5)

@iBug Yes. I just realised. Changed my flag.

@ArtOfCode That's just what was in the Ubuntu repos, I was only using it for testing. Did Bundler pin it as the version or something?
@JF Not much to test since I didn't assign any routes

@quartata shrug
you're gonna want to change it though
2.3 is bad

Ah, I see it put a .ruby-version thingy
don't know why it did that
Can I change the ruby in the Gemfile to be like the gems e.g >=2.2?

rails s is saying that config in config/application.rb isn’t defined. Any ideas why?

yes
because I have never tried to run this
It should be Rails.application.config

I think?

@quartata fkey is fetched with each request, IIRC.
I wasn't sure how long you could reuse the same one, so I did it that way.

@thesecretmaster IIRC, fkeys are valid for the lifetime of the session

Define session?

3:23 PM
user session

How often do those get invalidated?

@Glorfindel
20 mins ago, by DavidPostill
It's a poor copy of the question with photos added ...

@thesecretmaster Yeah I found it, get_fkey

3:32 PM
CE appears to fetch it only once but then again we have no idea if that's a stable thing. Let me check some other implementations
They all seem to be getting it from /chats/join/favorites for some reason

I mean, it's on every page IIRC

I know I always got mine from /rooms
Anways SwiftChatSE also appears to fetch it only once (@NobodyNada?)
easy solution: memoize get_fkey

It's not much of a performance hit anyways, I'm more inclined to just leave it as is.

@thesecretmaster ...it's a user session
its defined start and end points are login and logout

Yeah, but does it get auto-invalidated after a certain time period? I've seen that.

3:41 PM
If it does then it's a very long time period
I've been logged in for months before without getting invalidated
It can be invalidated by mods nuking user sessions, but that's also an exceptional case

@quartata Yep, once per server

I don't see too much harm in leaving it as is, but feel free to make a PR and I'll accept it.

I don't have a GitLab account

sigh. I'll do it then.

no no I'll make one one sec

3:46 PM
OK. I should just migrate it to GH. I remembered why I was using gitlab though. It was because I needed a free private repo.

@quartata I’d guess it’s doesn’t have a reason other than “that’s how CE did it”
At that point in development, my primary documentation was this PPCG post by ProgramFOX

@thesecretmaster Got an educational email address?

Yes, but it... well.... it can't receive any email from different domains.

Buenas noches, todos.

wat

3:53 PM
CI on bc98c75 succeeded.

that's... not a very useful email address

Yep. Only send/recieves to *@myschool.edu

there's probably a way to break that

Yeah, but it's done through google apps or whatever it's called
Not really worth it for me. I got rubymine for ed by sending them my student ID

that works
Anyway, the GitHub education pack gets you free private repos
you could get in touch with them and see if you can do the same

3:55 PM
I will do now

amusingly enough they sent me a reminder to renew mine this morning
apparently I've had it 2 years already O.o

@ArtOfCode wait hold up I forgot they were tied to the session
what I'm doing right now won't actually work lol
hmmm maybe I can get the bots to fetch the fkey while they're at it just to be lazy

@DavidPostill I know, I'm applying Hanlon's Razor here.

@thesecretmaster I'm confused, add_hook doesn't seem to take a server

Yeah... hooks are kinda an afterthought. I'll look and see if I can change it, or if there's a reason for it being the way it is.
Oh, it's because I didn't want to have to mess with the structure of @hooks.
Really, it should be an array of Hook objects.

You need to key on server and room ID
Room IDs are not unique across servers
that is room ID 1 could be SO room 1 or SE room 1 or MSE room 1

Yeah, I know. It just defaults to the global default room.
I think
Yes, and there's an easy fix
or... sorta
I'm looking

5:39 PM
Just make the keys tuples or whatever
I use a tuple (site, room_id) all the time as an identifier
I could have made it a class but eh

Yeah. The convention I've been using is having a hash like {"stackexchange" => [], "meta.stackexchange" => [], "stackoverflow => []}
So I think I'll just do that with hooks.

I'm wondering if we're going to get to peer-review this web app coursework... cuz if we are then I'm gonna have fun finding all the security holes
like making sure this thing is secure is the bit that's taking me the longest, you can bet plenty of people aren't going to know or bother

5:53 PM
It's on a branch because it's untested, I'll merge to master once I test it out. But it should work.

6:08 PM
@thesecretmaster looks right to me

@ArtOfCode I was thinking about the (two) SOBotics bots that actually use ML models and how we'd handle that
FireAlarm would probably be OK using DynamoDB, but I'm trying to decide what to do for Queen
I was thinking maybe either letting them use our Redis or alternatively store whatever data it needs in-memory ourselves and send it to it with each request
if it's small

@quartata machine learning datasets are never small

@ArtOfCode I'm talking about the actual trained models
it depends on what they are

6:16 PM
@quartata yeah those too
you're probably talking 30+ MB for a good model

The decent sized ones I've got here are 3 MB (3 hidden layers, about 50 inputs)
Granted they're also serialized
But those are nets
and they're not NLP
so no dictionary or other vectorizer data
in other words it depends, I pinged Petter to ask

@quartata IIRC most of SOBotics' stuff isn't nets
nets are basically the smallest models

Yeah, I know. NB filters are a lot bigger but also easier to store in a database (like FireAlarm does)
it's usually just key value
SVMs are also not big
(well, depends on the kernel)
Anyways I was thinking maybe something hybrid could work
word vectorization data goes in dynamodb
we ship off the model parameters
