Hi

@SmokeDetector why

5:36 PM
yesterday, by Henders
@JakeSymons - A few people have asked you to stop doing 'why' when you can get the same result from Clicking the MS link instead. Would you be able to click 'MS' in the future so it doesn't fill up the room, please?
You never responded to my question, @JakeSymons
Someone specifically asked you not to do 'why' for 'offensive body detected' yesterday too.

5:56 PM
@Henders That was me. I don't really care up until the point that it risks Smokey getting flagged which is now
like, you don't need to have every obscenity posted in chat

... someone's flagging stuff here?

No but when the transcript is filled with Body: Position 1-42: <obscenity> I'm not comfortable with the chances of someone showing up and flagging it

Yeah, we'll deal with that when it happens

Well we've already been dealing with it just by trashing said messages
They're not important anyways, it's just the why data. It's really a nuisance.

and honestly, nothing bad will happen if someone did flag and it got validated. Smokey will be suspended for a few minutes, someone will ping me and I'll ping Shog to unsuspend
Or I'd just do it if it was super clear cut.
Shog or some other somewhat-neutral moderator to review it
and we'll track down the flagger and explain some things
@quartata Now this is a valid reason.

6:13 PM
why don't we disable -why for only experienced users with an account on Smokey. It could be a privallged command such as replying to smokey with TPU

Because we shouldn't have to

@Undo so what do you think we should do?

Why data is totally public via Metasmoke, it doesn't make sense to have it as a privileged command

Can we just use the MS link?
Sometimes training people is cheaper than making system changes

yesterday, by Henders
@JakeSymons - A few people have asked you to stop doing 'why' when you can get the same result from Clicking the MS link instead. Would you be able to click 'MS' in the future so it doesn't fill up the room, please?
Metasmoke is so pretty anyways, go and admire its elegant totally-not-stock-Bootstrap design

6:16 PM
@quartata what about having a three strikes and your out policy. Using why three times or the overuse of it could result in suspension form chat. Can we pause the chat for those users

and talk at such a high level no offense

6:29 PM
mithrandir is definitely at least a level 37 talker

I read a lot.
That's also how I became a mod on Literature ;)
Also, as for rep... Mostly by answering Harry Potter questions on Science Fiction & Fantasy ;P

@Mithrandir your just like so high up in rep levels. Its like like. Wow

Actually, I'm not.
Fairly low compared to lots of people.

I can't get over 100 so compared to me its high

Start out by answering questions on a topic you know really well.
Being proficient with Google doesn't hurt either.

6:34 PM
mostly we all just have different paces of developing different things. i couldn't for the life of me figure out how socialising worked until i started getting a grip on it in the last couple of years of high school -- until that point i was perpetually feeling like i was maybe a year or two behind whatever other people around me had worked out.

No.

There are 171 sites, I'm sure you have knowledge in one of them. "Easier" is relative. For me, SO is easier because I'm been programming for...a while.

On Literature, if you try to answer a question you'll get murdered ._. It's something I'm trying to change, but we can be a little harsh over there.
Scifi.SE is easier for me, because I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy.

@JakeSymons Hi!

@doppelspooker you in Autstrallia
watching I'm a celebrity

If you're looking to socialise there's a number of other chats better positioned for that — I consider this one to be more or less a work channel, we're busy watching out for spam and handling it as it comes, and discussions usually only pertain to doing that one job effectively.
@JakeSymons I'm an Aussie, but I live in London.

8:01 PM
@doppelspooker yeah, well not much is happerning at the moment

charcoal isn't opposed to some off topic quipery, but generally isn't

@Magisch I was just killing time, not much is coming through Smokey now
Flagging question: If you flag something in the wrong category, but its still worth flagging does that come up as a helpful flag?

Depends on what mood the handling mod is in.

@Mithrandir its still pending so I hope its a good one

Officially, any flag that was raised in good faith shouldn't be declined. But... that's not always what happens.

8:10 PM
@Mithrandir Thats not always the case

I can still count my helpful flags on my hands so I really need to get that up :)

@Magisch as always, red flags are a bit of an outlier.
@JakeSymons you'll get there ;)

@Mithrandir I've had flags to remove bounties on blatantly OT questions declined
Because the mod who handled them took too long and the bounty expired before
I brought this up and that was the reasoning. The flag was perfectly valid but out of date. Declined.
And yes this happend over a year ago and I'm still full of salt

I would've marked that as helpful

SO mods are busy

8:13 PM
Like a "hey thanks for that but whoops"

And there's no way to change the status of a flag after it's handled... again with red flag exceptions

"What is this guy harping about a bounty there isn't one I've already exhausted the 3s allocated to this flag decline bah"
I empathize with having to contend thousands of flags a day
