Oh, found it
> Webpacker requires Node.js >= v6.4 and you are using v4.2.6
When running it manually

J F
I’d recommend 7.

k
Looks like 6.11 is LTS, 8.1 is current? nodejs.org/en

J F
So 8 then. Misread.

Is there a specific range of browsers we target with MS? I’m currently using this query, but I can change it to anything.

8:07 PM
I suspect most everyone here is using something modern-ish

J F
Do you have any analytics?

Should, gimme a sec
Heh, so I have server logs but nothing saying what site it's for
Shows you how much I use nginx logs
also, what the heck is Yandex and why is it indexing metasmoke?
Russian search engine
It needs to learn how to throttle

@Undo lol. block it in robots.txt

@Undo Hmm.
> The Yandex robot supports the robot exclusion standard with the enhanced capabilities that are described below.

I disagree :P

Clearly all lies :)

J F

I was thinking a 301 to one of those ten-hour YouTube videos
Wow, compiling Webpack assets is a pretty heavy operation
Is this supposed to eat 1G+ RAM?

J F
@Undo How long has it taken so far?

8:22 PM
couple minutes
Dev compilation is fast; prod is slow
ms down temp
I've seen this before with first-run asset compilation, though

J F
I’ve bundled jQuery and Bootstrap in application.js. Should I get them from a CDN instead?

Might be a good idea
Runs in a couple seconds without RAILS_ENV=production

Restart: API quota is 13380.

@JF Yeah, probably a good idea to pull them from a CDN. I'm not having luck compiling them
Which is kinda weird
Also having to run yarn after every load

J F
8:38 PM
@Undo Node dependencies go in ./node_modules, so that might get wiped on deploy.

kk, we'll persist that

Still trying to eat all the RAM in prod mode
Finished eventually, about an order of magnitude longer than dev mode

J F
Does changing config/webpack/production.js:11 to devtool: false, make it faster?

...why have we got Node dependencies in a Rails project?

J F
8:44 PM
@ArtOfCode ES6!!1

that... doesn't help

@JF You should use tree shaking in webpack, so the bundle will include only the code that is actually used.

J F
@MichałPerłakowski That’s enabled by default AFAIK. Unfortunately, most libraries don’t have ES6-module versions yet (they’re required for tree shaking).
@ArtOfCode Because webpack is Node-based, and that’s the future of client-side JS.

@JF I would say "present of client-side JS".

Don't know what's going on here - Cap failing on asset precompile:
02:19 deploy:assets:precompile
      01 ls /var/railsapps/metasmoke/releases/20170610204030/assets_manifest_backup
      01 ls:
      01 cannot access '/var/railsapps/metasmoke/releases/20170610204030/assets_manifest_backup'
      01 : No such file or directory
      01
      02 ~/.rvm/bin/rvm 2.4.1@metasmoke do bundle exec rake assets:precompile
      02 /var/railsapps/metasmoke/releases/20170610204524/config/initializers/appconfig.rb:3: warning: already initialized constant AppConfig
      02 /var/railsapps/metasmoke/releases/20170610204524/config/environments/production.rb:74: warning: p
But I can go to the release directory and run ~/.rvm/bin/rvm 2.4.1@metasmoke do bundle exec rake assets:precompile rails_env=PRODUCTION just fine

J F
8:48 PM
Also, babili, which minifies ES6+ stuff. Babel transpiles it all down to stuff that browsers can run today.

Might be because Capistrano isn't respecting nvm

J F
The PrecompileRequired bit comes from capistrano-plugins/capistrano-faster-assets, which raises it because it can’t find the ./assets_manifest_backup directory.

Let's try turning it off

J F
It seems like it checks for that directory, and runs rake assets:precompile if it isn’t present.

Right, so shouldn't make a difference here

J F
8:58 PM
rake assets:precompile runs rake webpacker:compile, which should print “Webpacker is installed 🎉 🍰” or “Configuration config/webpacker.yml file not found”.

I get the cake and stuff when I run it manually. Pretty sure it's nvm, chasing it
There we go. Looks like it was an NPM issue

Merged and on prod @JF, looks like it's working well
Thank you so much for figuring this out :)

@Undo and prod?

Works the same as before
(meaning "Capistrano takes care of it")
Everything's precompiled in prod, the difference is that dev lets you edit things on the fly

9:35 PM
@Undo but prod locally
still running rails s -e production for that locally, or some variant of foreman?

@ArtOfCode Should be able to run export RAILS_ENV=production; rails assets:precompile; rails s
So same as before, IIRC

J F
@Undo Except for the JS :(
!!/alive

@JF You doubt me?

@JF Huh, worked for me before, doesn't now. Caching?

J F
@Undo probably.

It gets generated by app/javascript/packs/vendor.js and is supposed to be included at app/views/layouts/application.html.erb:21.

Hello! I have noticed an attempt at spam of a kind that I don't think was reported: someone tried to sneak a telephone number as "edit reason" in a post on RPG.SE (I noticed and marked the edit review as spammy, but some other people just marked it as "not improving the answer".)

J F
@Zachiel Have a link?

Unfortunately, I can't really remember what the answer was about.

It looks like this, yes. Maybe I assumed it didnìt get reported because I thought FireAlert was the service for detecting spam (and we get Fire Alert notifies in chat) but I saw no such notify.

@Zachiel Hmm. Spamming in edit reasons would be weird. However 555-555-0199 is a fictional phone number
> In fact, only 555-0100 through 555-0199 are now specifically reserved for fictional use
So it's just a stupid edit reason and not actually spam.

11:08 PM
@DavidPostill good to know

i have, actually, seen legit attempted spam in edit reasons before once or twice.
it's weird but hey i guess it's a text box, so they'll dump the thing in there

Edit reasons is not somewhere where Smokey (or I assume Fire Alert) checks for spam though.

Also, if you are offline and come back online and Undo has deployed in the interim, it’ll do the same thing.
