sed | awk is often an antipattern -- what are you trying to accomplish there?
but of course none of these Unix utilities are likely to exist on Wintendo

linter
macOS
metasmoke
npm
querystring
querystrings
Skulpt

userscript
userscripts

@tripleee Copy the first X lines from the .user.js file to a (new) .meta.js file
Where X is any lines that contain a script's metadata block
Antipattern? maybe, but with my (very) limited knowledge that made it work...

10:38 AM
if you are using Awk anyway, refactoring the whole script into Awk is probably an improvement, but again, requiring Bash and Awk is probably a no-go for a portable script

@JF: How about "get-meta": "extractScriptMetadata.sh" in package.json?

you could do the file creation in Awk or try to replace the Bash only $(var/from/to} substitution with something POSIXly portable

@tripleee It's not used in the script. It's to generate metadata files on save, in Atom.

J F
@Cerbrus That’s what it was before — it tries to execute the global command extractScriptMetadata.sh

10:39 AM
@JF It has a ./ before it, before
"get-meta": "./extractScriptMetadata.sh"
That doesn't work.

J F
@Cerbrus That works on Unix, but not Windows.

@JF Incidentally they seem to have fixed linter and transpile. But apk is another for that list.

@tripleee Assuming I have a clue how to do that, which I don't.

@Cerbrus well again, if you require portability to Windows, how to do that in Awk is pretty much moot

@JF Yea, but making it work in unix by breaking it in windows isn't an option.
@tripleee It worked in windows.

J F

@tripleee Kinda

awk '/UserScript/ { exit } /./' "$1"

@tripleee: copy the whole meta block to a new file

10:47 AM
where "whole meta block" is defined as ...?

For this example:
Lines 1-16
So you get fire.meta.js

oh so /\/UserScript/ not /UserScript/

If you say so

if you want to include that line, swap them around, like this:
awk '/./; /\/UserScript/ { exit }' "$1"
notice also proper quoting of `"$1"

You need to understand that everything I know of the sed/awk commands is based on copy-pasting from SO and smashing random buttons in order to make it hopefully work.

So, if that script can be improved, please, be my guest :D
I'm sure it can be :D

@Cerbrus that's fine, you need to understand I have no idea why you want to do this (though now I'm beginning to form some sort of idea in my head)

Extracting the meta block reduces the load on whatever server is hosting the userscripts.

10:52 AM
do you want me to create a PR or something? you should be able to just copy/paste that into your existing Bash script, to replace the sed | awk part

J F
@Cerbrus That would be GitHub.

the redirection at the end > ${...something...} still needs to stay

As userscript plugins load the full userscript to check for updates, then load the full userscript again to actually install it. Unless you're using a .meta.js, then it just downloads the meta to check for updates, and only downloads the full script if a update is available
@tripleee Please do. Then I can easily test it here

Yea, that seems to work just great
