@Undo you get angus' email?
aye
can you forward it to me? Got nothing in my inbox
done, you'll have it in about ten minutes
@Undo just curious, why do we not have a python script for nocrash, and instead a shell script? Just curious :)
@ThomasWard That's how I wrote it years ago, and it's worked fine so we haven't poked it, mostly
17:07
ah
also, a little easier to do git stuff. All small things.
true
Was curious since shell script is a little harder to execute in the debugger :p
i'll have to port the code to Python before launching the debugger... bleh
otherwise it just lasts for what is it 6 hours before it dies?
@ThomasWard You could always disable that part for a while, it'd probably be fine
true
i'm lazy-ish. Besides, this is coding practice for me :P

@Undo Not really that hard, I need to test-execute though so we'll see if it works
@ThomasWard Okay, I've got a small change to nocrash incoming. Just a sec.
You'll want to incorporate it
17:29
@Undo new error code?
aye
just need to add an elif to the massive if block :P
yup
and getting git commands to work? Not a problem heh
from sh import git
well that's cheating :P

But, we'll allow it

@Undo wrt "cheating", we do the cheating in gitmanager.
so not cheating when it's already being done :)
oh and we can use True/False for 'stoprunning' and a few other nice things

@Undo teward/Aurora
@SmokeDetector So what just happened here: It switched to standby mode, sent a ping to metasmoke saying it did so, metasmoke looked and saw that we now have no active instance and immediately told it to switch back to normal mode.
!!/queuestatus
@Undo you mean told Aurora to go back to normal?
@ThomasWard aye
17:38
nice
well there's an essay for you @angus
yee gads
someone wrote a lot of words
now I have pressure
I'm good at writing a lot of words without realising I've done it until I've finished :)
./nocrash.sh standby to startup in that mode.
To be only slightly nosy, is this batch of words something everyone should see?
17:41
possibly, but it's fairly boring and possibly damaging if the right folks got hold of it.
not "damaging" as in "meta would yell at us", but as in "someone's feelings might get hurt".
@Andy it's not uber-private, but it's not something that should be public. I'd be happy for a lot of people here to see it, but just dropping it in the room is possibly not a great idea
in case you're curious of the Python version of nocrash :P
Fair enough. I was expecting it to be related to the systems not the people.
@ThomasWard you'll need to set ChatExchangeP to an environment variable somewhere in there
@Andy yeah, systems stuff usually ends up in here somehow, even if it starts as an email
17:43
@Undo that's easy, but i forgot an os.environ[] wrap
1 moment
@Undo do standby instances still ping metasmoke?
and do we have a way to push an originally-standby, now-active instance back into standby?
i.e. aurora dies, I push EC2 to active, Thomas fixes aurora - is there an un-failover button?
@ArtOfCode stop standby :P
MS pushes Aurora to Active
restart Standby to Standby mode
but we should have something yes to handle manuially switching active instance
@ThomasWard but then I have to SSH in to EC2, whereas I did the original failover from MS
alrighty, time to test-run this...
oops error

I didn't feel comfortable flagging it as spam since the affiliation with the company was disclosed in the answer. Clicking through to the user's profile, I see: they've never asked a question ...

@ThomasWard I'm AFK starting about right now, but you can do whatever you want ;)
It's your hardware and we have Git, so you can't exactly hurt anything
@ArtOfCode (1) you wouldn't push yours to active, metasmoke would almost certainly beat you to it unless you used the buttons on /status, and (2) !!/standby <string that matches location
I.e. !!/standby ArtOfCode would move yours back to standby, were it active.
awesome
afk now
Does standby affect the rate of post scanning? Since its standby I would expect it to buffer up to the max api number when a post is coming from the Se websocket, so it some backlog to reduce the dead zone between old smokey dying, and the new one reporting

In Greek mythology, Daedalus (/ˈdɛdələs ˈdiːdələs/; Ancient Greek: Δαίδαλος Daidalos, perhaps related to δαιδάλλω "to work artfully"; Latin: Daedalus; Etruscan: Taitale) was a skillful craftsman and artist. He is the father of Icarus, the uncle of Perdix and possibly also the father of Iapyx, although this is unclear. == Family == His parentage was supplied as a later addition to the mythos, providing him with a father in Metion, Eupalamus, or Palamaon, and a mother, Alcippe, Iphinoe, or Phrasimede. Daedalus had two sons: Icarus and Iapyx, along with a nephew either Talus or Perdix. Athen...

20:44
btw, is there any difference between nocrash.py and nocrash.sh in terms of functionality?
@dorukayhan There shouldn't be
@dorukayhan not really, the only reason nocrash.py exists is so i can attach a python debugger to it and its subprocesses
but it's working so heh
@ThomasWard k
@ThomasWard Is your long-term plan to switch over to .py all the time, or keep .sh around?
Not sure what the reason to keep sh around would be
@Undo that's up to you, I like Py a little better, if only because we then don't have to fuss with Bash syntax as much
and we can cheat with git commands xD
long term I'd like to keep the .py, but since everything's coded for the nocrash.sh currently (your fun little toy for EC2 instances, etc.)
also was a fun little coding exercise :P
20:49
@ThomasWard That's easy to change, not sure what else depends on that file being there.
I don't think anything does, I can hunt for usages
yeah i don't see any other uses currently
I think it's a bit more readable in the Python version though.
@Undo @ArtOfCode @angussidney I'm for replacing nocrash.sh with nocrash.py completely, but I'm not sure about you guys, what're your thoughts on it?
(and yes I did a multiping, sue me)
@ThomasWard It seems to work, why not try it for a while
We can always revert if it borks
J F
J F
@ThomasWard You could (for now) replace nocrash.sh with a script that calls nocrash.py, and logs a deprecation warning.
@JF I could, or we could just symlink
@JF this is a good idea
20:56
either way we could keep the systems 'working' without much issue
