Seems unlikely as a miss, but I guess it could have just been when Smokey was down though.

@Undo If you're able to get something to overrun a buffer with your input, your input can become executable machine code
@Rob How do you make sure it gets executed, though?
Rob
Rob
Well, that's the hard part ;)
One way to do it is to overwrite x number of bytes with NOPs
and hope whatever called the vulnerable code jumps into it
at the end of your NOPs you place your desired paylaod
And by doing that, you increase the width of your payload and thus the chance that something jumps into the memory you overwrote with your nastyness.
Huh, makes sense
Rob

Basically, yeah

Haven't found more more spellcaster spam, but here's another odd one. It's a copy-paste from elsewhere on the page with a URL tacked on the end. Gardening spam, of all things: rpg.stackexchange.com/a/90657

heh
Oh, here's an interesting one. Spellcaster spam, and they double-spammed by commenting on their own post: rpg.stackexchange.com/a/88966
@SevenSidedDie on an rpg question about spells? cool.
> WATSAP
how hard could it possibly be to at least pay attention to spelling
Also, how do you become a verified spell caster? Is there like a test or something?
5
@dorukayhan It's likely on purpose. Makes it harder to catch with filters.
@KazWolfe Most of our spellcaster spam is. It's almost like they think their spam will fit right in. ^^
@SevenSidedDie So you're saying is that these are the LARPers that take things too far and forget about reality?
Why weren't those caught by "Bad keyword with email?" It checks for spell(caster)? on line 136 of findspam
@NobodyNada IIRC smokey has a detection threshold, and those aren't spammy enough to trigger Smokey's "o noes" mode.
(ofc i have no actual idea because i'm not here too often ^~^)
@KazWolfe Nah, Peter David Carter-Poulsen spelled better.
00:20
@KazWolfe Doesn't seem like it; keyword_email's logic is just if keyword and email, and it's directly in the list of checks.
@NobodyNada oh, i see. who knew that my reading the code would actually answer the questions and make me seem less dumb? lol
Email + Phone number at the end of a post might be a decent trigger
FWIW my edit on that was just to revert it to its original form after someone “helpfully” removed the email address.
hmm... spell with an email should be triggering the filter
00:22
@NobodyNada Wouldn't that get too many FP with the words-letters meaning of “spell”?
but emails in posts are rarely legitimate
@NobodyNada right, but the majority of RPG.SE posts don't have e-mails so they don't raise flags.
> Would not be caught for title, body, and username.

@SevenSidedDie What on earth? I feel dumber after reading that.

@NobodyNada Smokey must've been down?
We might not have had that implemented in oct '16
I was wondering that too; I'll check
@SevenSidedDie i feel like there's a good story here that I can't see.

i mean, yeah, you could get a copy of a skimmed card, but that only goes so far, and you can't dynamically generate chip cards.
@KazWolfe Hm, looks like all his posts on RPG were downvoted far enough that they're deleted now. Looks like you can taste some of the rainbow of weirdness on various SEs and metas by searching for mentions of the name on chat.SE: chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=peter+david+carter . He got around quite a bit before the network banhammer dropped.
@SevenSidedDie i'll browse through data.SE too
00:41
@KazWolfe Spammers only need 1 in a few thousand to fall for their dumbness. :/
Email + testimony or testimonies might be a useful check?
I notice even the ATM scam there says “testimony”. They seem to like that word for some reason.
@SevenSidedDie oh my. one of those users.
@KazWolfe Most of their posts on RPG were either asking how to better blur the line between life and their games, or asking for help understanding why they were getting banned from their local RPG clubs when doing that. That's why your message reminded me of him. :)
@SevenSidedDie yeah, i see a heap of "why was my question deleted" posts everywhere.
Their Workplace posts were similarly odd, with a whiff of either making stuff up or honestly not being able to keep track of reality.
@SevenSidedDie well, if i get bored, i have another profile to stalk through.

@Magisch I'd say don't stare at the projected accuracy rate, think about what it means
@tripleee It means that the chance of a FP in that is lower then when I'm flagging by myself
two half-reasonable heuristics might overlap (as in the recent case of "non-English link" and "non-Latin link") to trigger a weight close to 200 on a single weak feature
Personally I'm fine with 99,5% +-
@tripleee "half reasonable" heuristics don't contribute 90 score per
There are plenty of 2 reason caught posts who get only 150-170 score
the 180 is deliberate, it requires 2 high accuracy heuristics at once.

well yeah
Thats a TP though
I'm not going to set it to 160 because 160 encompasses a whole lot more fp's
I'm not confident auto-flagging on those grounds is all I'm saying
I think it's still above 99 but still
@tripleee which is why my settings wouldn't auto flag that
add something silly like accidentally triggering a blacklisted keyword in the user name and you're above 180
to reach 180 with 2 heuristics each of those heuristics in turn has to be very accurate. You saw it there: the 2 didn't run enough score
@tripleee Thats very unlikely
so unlikely as to be statistically tolerable, imo.
@Magisch but why take that risk for a few fractions of percentage points?
06:26
@tripleee because 180 means a lot more actual TPs get autoflagged by me
so, ego?
no

@Magisch when a new heuristic is introduced, it will have an initial weight of 100 until the first false positive comes
we have not brought the system across that boundary yet
a rule which looks great at first (say, on Stack Overflow) but turns out to produce false positives at a steady rate (say, on a bunch of smaller sites, so it's not immediately obvious) could throw off calculations quite a bit until its weight stabilizes
we could counter that by excluding unstable reasons from contributing to the score (say, require a substantial number of hits before the weight is even calculated to anything other than 0)
but that logic isn't there as of right now

by that logic, the new "deeply nested blockquotes" rule should be excluded, it only has five hits as of now metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/reason/113
its predecessor has a much weaker track record metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/reason/112
it's fairly conservative right now but I've been meaning to relax it because it seems to miss some obvious spam
but that could mean it starts to develop FPs again
because reasons can be updated, the bar against too few hits is insufficient really, you should have a quarantine after the code is changed where it doesn't add into the weight until it's stable again
however we define that exactly
100 messages without an FP and at least one hit?

SE keyboard shortcuts are nice, but they can only be used if the page is fully loaded. Flagging with your mouse is faster...
@Glorfindel but then FDSC won't work
If you open the dialog before the page loads
Well, it did work for me?!
@tripleee looks good. Maybe the max. weight of a rule should be limited by the # of posts it ran on (e.g. a rule triggered by 50 posts has a weight of min(50, accuracy %)).
@Undo IIRC you're the person who knows stuff about CI, Circle seems to be failing when installing setuptools-34.0.0. Could you take a look at that?
@Glorfindel that is smart, leave a comment so we don't forget about that idea
@Glorfindel I'm a bit disappointed with the keyboard shortcuts, too
@angussidney in my experience it works reasonably even when the page hasn't fully loaded, although there is obviously a limit to what it can do if you are wicked fast
but as long as you leave it open until it finishes, it seems to be able to cope
07:25
Strange, because theoretically GM/TM shouldn't even run the US before the page is fully loaded because we're using injection
the problem anyway is that you can't use shortcuts until images (including ads, if any!) have loaded completely
But if it's working like you described, that's awesome
I guess it can't display the metasmoke information in the flag dialog if it opens before FDSC has had a chance to run
but I get the "fed back xxx to Metasmoke" green box eventually even when that happens
at least that's my impression -- hard to repro obviously
