@Undo Of course

no
Also, you'd need to have the cronjob set up, which you probably don't

So I figured out I can make the websocket client throw an exception if there is no message for X seconds (which I currently have at 10, since the ActionCable heartbeats every 3 seconds).
@NobodyNada ah, that'd be good
So now, whenever there's a timeout, it just prints "Couldn't bind to MS websocket" and stops trying.
@NobodyNada Throw it in a while true: loop
00:31
Okay, great! (I was just about to ask if I should do that)
Maybe require one successful connection before looping.
(so we don't get a hundred gazillion "couldn't bind" messages)
Also, would be good to sleep(10) or something on an exception so it doesn't beat my server to death.
how about the top of the loop clears the successful connection flag?
so:
successful_connection = True
while successful_connection:
    successful_connection = False
    try:
        connect
        successful_connection = True
        bla bla bla
    except:
        print an error
@NobodyNada might I make a different suggestion?
while True:
    try:
        connect
        ....
    except socketTimeoutErrorType:
        print "Timeout Error"
        break
    except:
        print an error
00:35
but we want to reconnect on an error
@ThomasWard and only break on a non-timeout error
Assuming it has a unique error type, which it probably does
we still might want a regular "websocket closed" error though
like if there's a network glitch and we lose the MS connection
@NobodyNada Yeah, so just if e.isnt(FancyTimeoutException): break
00:36
@Undo like that?
oops indent fail
Oh, yeah. That's how you do that
@Undo yeah you can have multiple except captures here for different types of errors
what we have to do though is force a timeout error to be uncaught and die off so we can get the error class/type to capture
IIRC, it'll be an error from socket
but that could change depending on what's handling the websocket connections
room topic changed to Charcoal HQ: Where diamonds are made, smoke is detected, and we break things by developing on production. 42,000 true positives and counting. Oneboxes are awesome. Handy links: erwaysoftware.com/blaze, github.com/Charcoal-SE, charcoal-se.org [best-bad-practices] [dev-on-prod] [panic-driven-development] [plastic-knives]
@Undo normally I try and capture a specific type of error, and then a secondary catchall, the only exception would be a master runner for sub-actions, in which case that would capture all otherwise uncaptured Exception type exceptions
if the only errors are one specific type though then an except on that error class helps prevent an overly broad exception capture
which is one of the things I suppressed a lot
00:43
@ThomasWard Sounds like Nobody's already got that part figured out
indeed.
@Undo but if we want it to break the loop, we'll just need to make sure the exception type captured will match
otherwise we'll have to break on all errors
Which errors do we want to stop on, and which ones should we loop on?
@NobodyNada To start, probably loop on the timeout error and stop on all others
alright. I'm not sure that the timeouts are very significant though; most of the time, when we have a problem, it will be some kind of connection error.
The current behavior is that if the websocket connection dies and throws an error, it just prints a message and stops trying.
@NobodyNada We'll test it
00:49
Do you know if the problem earlier today was an error, or if we needed the timeout to catch it?
Should have been a timeout; I just shut the server down.
But I'm somewhat ignorant of websocket connection lifecycles.
Websockets don't timeout unless you try to write to them
22 mins ago, by NobodyNada
So I figured out I can make the websocket client throw an exception if there is no message for X seconds (which I currently have at 10, since the ActionCable heartbeats every 3 seconds).
It's not a timeout in that sense of the word
also, @NobodyNada I may have overridden ActionCable's default heartbeat timing. Let me look at that.
@Undo I was logging the heartbeats earlier, and it felt like 3 seconds
May be different in prod
00:55
ah
If I did, I can't find it now
It looks like killing MS throws an error immediately instead of waiting for the timeout
@Undo User removed from blacklist (7 on alcohol.stackexchange.com).
yeah, MS dying throws a WebSocketConnectionClosedException
00:58
@NobodyNada In that case, go ahead and loop on the error
Huh, well that's simple enough. Good.
okay. Would you like it to stop looping after X errors?
As in, if Metasmokes closes several websockets in a row?
metasmoke could be deployed a lot in 6 hours. If you put a sane sleep time on it, it should be fine.
Pretty sure Passenger restarts cause the websocket to drop
is 10 seconds okay?
Sure
01:02
alright
I only ended up adding like 2 lines of code; sorry it took so long!
alright, here's the logic:
has_succeded = False
while True:
    try:
        connect
        has_succeded = True
        bla bla bla
    except:
        print "Couldn't bind to MS websocket"
        if not has_succeded:
            break
        else:
            sleep(10)
that way, it won't loop if the very first connection failed, but it will loop otherwise
while !has_succeeded ?
But then it will never run the loop. I wanted a do/while sort of logic.
I don't think I understand the logic of that code. Or at least it doesn't seem exactly clean.
if an error occurs during the very first websocket connection, break. Otherwise, loop.
in other words, loop only if there has been one successful connection
... oh. hm...
01:14
we could eliminate the has_succeded check, but if someone's running Smokey without a metasmoke, I'd rather not spam the console with "couldn't bind" messages.
01:29
@Undo Alright, I've opened a PR. I'm probably going to fail flake8 though...
...it failed, but I have no idea why.
link to PR?
@NobodyNada you aren't obeying style rules
1 second
oops; I was looking at the wrong part of the CI build for the error.
@NobodyNada yeah, we have a few different Flake8 tests in here
one's for tests, one's for the actual code
01:33
alright, I think it will pass now
Looks plausible. I've got it from here.
yep
@NobodyNada but yeah just for future: travis-ci.org/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/builds/193250740#L213 is where your failures in Flake8 start
a little trickier to find since it looks like it succeeds two lines earlier
(side effect of the need of two Flake8 tests, one for our ./test/* dir, and a different one for the rest of the code)
thanks!

@ThomasWard 34.197.90.29, DNS TTL hasn't expired yet
