@angussidney see all that empty space at the bottom of the sidebar? Fills that up with Smokey reports, with feedback buttons.

The chat sidebar?

@angussidney no, main sites
well, and metas

I realized only now that literally every userscript I have is SE related

@Magisch likewise

same here

11:02 AM
here too

Sign of a good website, when people start making userscripts for it
I find it amusing how every app sending feedback through the api shows as mine.

Your userscript is wildly popular
People are making MS accounts just to be able to use it

lol
@ArtOfCode is there anything else you can do with the metasmoke api other than send feedback?

Thanks

11:06 AM
I need to document the write routes, actually

@ArtOfCode In the posts by feedback, if we specify the type as tpu- and in another case as tpu, are we gonna get different reports? We shouldn't as they mean the same thing, but just confirming

@AshishAhujaツ the answer is probably yes
Haven't checked it, though
It does a literal match of feedback type, so tpu- will only match that exact string.

@ArtOfCode So will this remain as it is or are you gonna change it so that any report with tpu- or tpu will get returned?

@AshishAhujaツ Unless there's a really compelling reason otherwise, it's easier to leave as is

ok. Anyways most people send back tpu-, not tpu

11:12 AM
aye
There, all documented
I count 7 or 8 people currently using FDSC, and 2 using Smokey Sidebar. That's not bad

FDSC is really nice when you're manning the night shift or doing other stuff

I'd add more userscripts, but the rest of my extensive list are either mod scripts or not Charcoal stuff

I'm sure there will be more nice charcoal ideas

1:35 PM
@ArtOfCode Neat
Opinions on this report btw? It was sd k ed and nuked, but seeing that made me feel kind of shitty
Despite it being a bad post ... but still

@ArtOfCode Thank you

np

The corporate drone over here appreciates it and curses the corporate overlords at the same time.

We just nuked and destroyed a desperate plea for help from a children's charity

@Magisch don't be so sure, the Internet is full of trolls. There's probably about a 50-50 chance that's fake.
Anyway, that report doesn't have any feedback on it, so you can go review it. I'd say it's an f.

1:37 PM
@ArtOfCode I googled the project and its supposedly a legit charity

@Magisch sure, but anyone could have posted it with any email address

doesn't need to be on SO

Won't you think of the kids?!
NO!

of course not. I am one :P
that'd be selfish
2

I know it doesnt, but it feels like spam destruction and instant IP block is unnecessarily harsh for that

1:38 PM
Heh. Exactly

@Magisch don't worry about the IP block, it'll wear off if it hasn't already

@Magisch yeah, that sounds right. It just needs deletion, it's not really spam.

yeah, there's some history there ya'll can't see. I'll handle it, don't worry about it.

Maybe I'm overreacting but I can't shake the feeling we just crushed someone who was desperate for help under our heel.

Maybe we did? But it doesn't matter, they weren't desperate enough to read the rules.

1:40 PM

@Magisch yeah, it looks like it. I've pinged them an email that basically says "SO is the wrong place; get back to me if you want pointing to some more appropriate resources"

I'm a tad concerned about our reputation in this too
Taken out of context it may look mighty bad that we spamflag nuked this in under a minute

If someone complains, give them the context.

Why? Stack Overflow isn't the place to solicit freelance positions.

Maybe I'm heavily overthinking this

I spamflagged it and will do that again to anyone using Question page as a free ad service.

I have a page of flags open right now, and I'm about to crush a bunch of probably-well-meaning people's posts. That's just what moderation is on a site with strange rules.

In MS, on the time to deletion graph, is the scale in seconds?

Seconds
should probably get that in an axis label somewhere

1:58 PM
@undo Dear Diary: Today I learned that moderation is about crushing people's hopes and dreams on the internet.
@undo The "same scale as above" threw me. That's why I asked.

@Undo pushed

I mean I'd still crush them
But maybe with a message like "This is not where to ask for that, please go somewhere else"

@ArtOfCode Didn't you want to change the message to be less verbose then have a { metasmoke } in front?

Oh, it's echoing every userscript feedback in here now?

not sure
In theory only the first
lets test on the next report

That one above was a dupe.

oh

It's still alive though, only on -3 yet
You can add another flag

5:27 PM
I already flagged it
remember

Oh, sure >.<
I did not read the name in the other feedback

@Magisch That's added at the Smokey level, should be trivial to remove.

@undo How about it only firing the message if there is exactly 1 feedback (the one it's firing the message about) on the post

I think the existence of these messages (one for each flag cast) is a bug, not just {metasmoke} part.

5:34 PM
We don't need more then one reminder that feedback was given

@Magisch That'd work. I think that's how it's supposed to work, maybe not implemented that way.

@undo Art said he liked that idea when I first brought it up
I was under the impression we'd rescinded the messages until some throttle like that could be put in

I'll probably do it in a while

12+ people are using art's userscript now, growing daily
without a throttle that could get old very fast

Meaning when I'm motivated enough to get up and find my laptop

5:37 PM

@undo I imagine you as a lazy small dog camping in front of a bonfire next to a bowl of treats and thinking "no, not right now"

@undo it looks a little strange without any prefix, but we'd get used to it

awesome
Might not even need username on that, not sure

7:02 PM
Nice, but when reports come at greater rate, the feedback won't be easy to match to posts...

@redredwine It only omits the post link if the feedback is on the last post.

Ah, cool.

Otherwise it'll specify which one.
So it shouldn't be too bad.
better than our sd - - - 2k 2f - - stuff

I think having a username there is reasonable, otherwise it would look too much like "the official verdict".

Will it work with race conditions? if smokey says something before metasmoke has received it?

7:04 PM
@redredwine That's true

@Ferrybig probably not, but we're talking milliseconds between chat reports and metasmoke receiving the data

@Ferrybig Chat posts usually don't beat metasmoke by very much, so you have a very narrow window for that to happen.

You could make Smokey reply to itself.

@ByteCommander I'd like to do that, CE doesn't give us the ID of the posted message
definitely not in time to send it to metasmoke; CE is async

That's a flaw in ChatExchange though, not missing data, right?

7:12 PM
But when you post the feedback, you have a list of recent messages stored by Smokey, so could look up the one with given post id.
(Most recent one, if there are multiple)

@redredwine getting a little more complicated there, but maybe

Or does the list have Post Ids...? Maybe it's just a list of message #s

It has to have some way to associate it with posts.

@undo oh ... I fp- that one ...

@rene I nuked the whole thing in metasmoke anyway, doesn't matter
oh drat, it probably went through to the Tavern

7:15 PM
Yeah

Yeah, that's fine

I couldn't figure out what was wrong so went with fp- to get rid of it
then checked here in case something was up ...

GlobalVars.latest_smokedetector_messages is indeed just a list of message ids.

Oh, then we get the message from CE?
Has to be
otherwise we've been running on nonexistent unicorn magic for the last few years

Yes, when feedback is given in chat, here we pull a past message by its id
That wouldn't work so well for finding a message by the id of the post reported in it. Oh well, perhaps the current system is good enough.
The alternatives are changing the structure of GlobalVars.latest_smokedetector_messages to make it a list of dicts {msgid: site: postid: }, or having a parallel list of site/postIds.
