11:59 AM
here's a thought: what would it take to integrate another platform into Smokey to run spam checks there too?

user435118
@ArtOfCode For example, what platform?

At the very least you'd need to reimplement/adapt the websocket thingie (I do suppose that Codidact folks would be willing to provide a feed) and the flagging API.

user435118
That's just a BS version of SE...

Better and Shinier

12:01 PM
@Daniil Hi, I'm the developer :P

user435118
@ArtOfCode Oh hello there, who are you? :P

FR: provide a flag retraction API for co-smokey

easy
well, once there's an API at all
but yeah... websockets/flagging APIs... not difficult

Maybe name Smokey's brother Yogi?

user435118
@ArtOfCode Just why though? :(

user435118
Why make a copy of SE and make it worse?

It's better, not worse. Or at least, going to be.

user435118
What's so good about it though?

Also, a nice backup in case SEI decides to throw a fit again.

user435118
It even has a discord and a mini-meta, so cute

12:06 PM
It will be community driven, and thus better suited for each of the communities it hosts rather than one-size-fits-all that SE has.

user435118
Do you have your own lawyers as well? :P

I'm not saying they haven't. We're still around helping them, after all. But trust isn't something easily rebuilt either

@Daniil talk is cheap, I'm not involved in the codidact effort yet but it does make sense for the community to hedge our bets

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad ns for domain in body (1): i m aurel biolife by imaurelbiolife on mathoverflow.net

@Braiam it's a very crude tool, it's not very useful because it gets a lot of false positives for most ASNs
there are a couple in states where anti-malware laws are not very consistently enforced which have 100% TP rate and which could be blacklisted
I have been building up watches for individual IP addresses instead; it's still pretty crude but shows some promise
including strong indicators that some IP ranges could well be watched or even blacklisted
but we don't have code to do that yet

@tripleee Yeah, those are responsibility of the hosting provider.

some hosting providers are better at putting all the fugly spammers in a specific netblock

BTW, the sound alert scared me...

halflife:2020-05-18 12:23:47,988:242512: tas.co.in: ip 160.153.137.14 (ip-160-153-137-14.ip.secureserver.net.)
good example ^ it's shared by a couple other domains
tripleee$ ip-search 160.153.137.14
     11 160.153.137.14
	      2 trendinwire.com
	      5 eazy2move.com
	      4 datacornering.com

Wow, that's weird. Those guys went through the trouble of setting PTR?
(probably since most servers reject non-PTR email)

uh, no? the PTR is their hosting provider's generic ip-160-153-137-14.ip.secureserver.net.

So, how you do the ip to domain conversion? Or is this smokey cache?

it's looking like some Cloudflare IP ranges would be pretty safe to blacklist but I have a pending refactoring on the code base which needs to be finished first
@Braiam this is from halflife's chat transcript

@ArtOfCode It looks likely that the changes you made to log SE API calls are resulting in all autoflags failing. Please see the flag logs. It looks like the failure is when MS tries to get the revisions for the reported post, so there's a failure for every reported post, not just those which are actually to get autoflags.
That then calls get_response(), which fails when it calls Net::HTTP.get_response() with the error "no implicit conversion of URI::HTTPS into String".

user435118
@user12986714 Good point, I mod flagged it

@user12986714 The primary issue there is that we have a fairly high probability random error with the rails-tests. This causes them to fail fairly often, but potentially pass if re-run. The fact that they do fail too often makes it easy to mentally dismiss seeing a failure. The developer needs to actually look at the CI results to see if the failure is the random error, or if it was a real issue. In this case, it was a real issue.
@Daniil You'll probably want to invalidate with SE the authorization that MS has and re-authorize, so that the token is invalid. Obviously, you won't be able to re-authorize until the current problem is fixed.
