In short, I'll be setting up a tunnel between horsepower and network exit, and route traffic from Smokey (running on compute server) through the tunnel, which will enable it to reach the internet faster.

Smoking in tunnels isn't a good idea, tho :P

7:09 PM
@S.S.Anne It doesn't actually take a room meeting to get SmokeDetector privileges in SOCVR. What it normally takes is asking the ROs, and then reminding them sometime later that they forgot to handle your request. That may sound a bit pragmatic, or indicate that we SOCVR ROs are ... less than diligent about tracking/handling such requests, but it's a fair description of what normally happens.

to wait for SD to finish rebooting before starting to post.

Restart: API quota is 10021.

@10Rep I've added you to the privilege list for SD. You should run the !!/amiprivileged command to verify. It would be a good idea to read through the Feedback Guidance, SmokeDetector wiki, and SmokeDetector commands (in particular feedback).
If you haven't already read it, there's an Introduction to Participating in Charcoal.
You may also want to look at the userscripts we have available (GitHub), as they can be quite helpful, depending on how you want to participate. For viewing, feedback, and flagging in chat, I find FIRE and AIM to be the ones I use the most.
For flagging through the userscripts, your metasmoke account needs to be write authenticated with SE, which, if you haven't already done so, can be done from the authentication page and doesn't require you to also sign up for autoflagging, although authenticating is also a required step for signing up for autoflagging.
In addition, to enable manual flagging, the checkbox that says "Allow metasmoke to raise flags for my account" on this page also needs to be checked. If you have no entries in the "ID Site Count Flags Used Today" list at the bottom of that page, then autoflagging will still not be enabled, but manual flagging through the userscripts will be enabled.
Just so you know, we normally tell people when they are getting privileges that we practice the "ton of bricks" discipline method here: If you mess-up sufficiently, or consistently, we come down like a ton of bricks :-).
To quote ArtOfCode: "TL;DR: ton-of-bricks is mostly to say that we almost never need to enforce things because things enforce themselves through having a good community here. If it gets to the point that someone's enforcing something, something's gone badly wrong."

Manually silence SD so you can speak freely.
Or, you know, create a 'Welcome new user!' page and link to that.
But that's assuming new users read.

They should :D

And while we can assume new users here aren't stupid, assuming they actually read may be a step too far with people we don't know that well.

7:39 PM
@Mast That I could do, but it's easier to just remember to wait for both reboot messages. :;

@Makyen Apparently not :P
Since it keeps happening.

@Mast Most do. Some don't.
@Mast I'll remember ... eventually. :)

We'll see what happens with the next user that comes in :D

Yep. :)

@Makyen cc @10Rep Note that "mess up" doesn't mean "make a mistake", it means "do something intentionally irresponsible/antagonistic". Charcoalers are generally quite friendly, forgiving of mistakes, and willing to help each other learn. We recognize that our systems and policies have quite the learning curve -- so don't be afraid of us :)
That being said, privileges in here are heavily trust-based, and in the event of an intentional and egregious breach of trust...well, that's where the ton-of-bricks comes into play.

7:43 PM
Which doesn't happen often, but we've seen some crazy things.

Really crazy indeed...

@10Rep When in doubt, ask. And feel free to scroll through the transcript of the past day to see how cases have been handled previously.

I've noticed that we have quite a good number of code-change PRs in our backlog. Many of them are awaiting review even ready for merge but haven't been actioned yet. Is this simply due to a shortage of time for code reviews (since we no longer have quite as many people actively maintaining the SD codebase)? If that's the bottleneck, I would be willing to help out with code review/maintenance.
I don't have a ton of time to commit and I'm also not a Python expert, so I'm not necessarily asking for write access -- but perhaps we could create a GitHub project board or something so that I could categorize issues and PRs between e.g. "requires changes", "awaiting review", and "awaiting admin approval"?
cc @Makyen @ArtOfCode

9:29 PM
@NobodyNada For me, it's a matter of blocking out time to review and test them. I've been intending to get to them for ages, well, largely since they were posted, really. Part of the problem was that the first time I did block out time to work on reviewing them, I ended up spending 9 hours that day (part of that time was off and on) working with the author of a couple of the PRs to fix bugs, improve the code, etc. (Actually most of that time was on one PR, with a couple hours on another.)
I'm hopeful / expectant that I will have time this weekend to work on them. I have been noticeably less crash-level busy over the several days.
Other people reviewing the code is definitely helpful. Frankly, the more people that review the PRs, the better the code will be.

BTW do you guys agree with my feedback to Smokey above? Just want to make sure I'm on the right track.

@Makyen That makes sense. I'm set up to run test instances, so if I can help to take some of that load then I'm willing to do so.

@10Rep You can always click the MS (metasmoke) link for that, and other posts, to see if people agree with you. Perhaps even review many of the recent fp, tp, and naa's. I found that really helpful when I started a few weeks ago.
All the posts require 2 feedbacks so if you're generally sure, don't hesitate to vote. You can check later to see if people agree. If you're not sure, just wait and see what others do.

@DanielWiddis Well, it seems as if people agree with me. 1 of them has reached 2 votes, and the rest need more votes.
