i am really more concered about the human aspect of managing the accounts than the code
just wanted to demonstrate that the code part is not hard because we already use the Client directly rather than using room.send_message or the like
that would make it harder because that implicitly uses the same client that you used to open/listen to the room

@aspaghetto I'm not particularly a fan of multiple accounts if you are talking about how to get Smokey to behave under heavy spam load, I made some comments on the Github issue but the more I think about it, the more I seem to prefer doing something really simple with the existing websocket
in fact I was thinking the existing PulseMonitor could quite easily be set up to monitor how Smokey keeps up with reports and post something to alert us if it's lagging behind by more than just a few posts
if we make that a regular thing our userscripts could probably pick up the PulseMonitor notifications instead of attempt to parse the human-readable reports that Smokey posts here
which would eventually mean that many spam messages will already have been closed by our regulars by the time you see the report from Smokey
... but one thing at a time
Manish merged by contribution to Chatexchange so now I should be able to make Halflife a lot snappier by merging adjacent chat posts whenever possible
this could be used by SmokeDetector as well, of course
but chat messages with formatting can't be merged to multiline messages

@tripleee i mean i feel like that should be happening regardless
but chat is still important to get these reports into the site-specific rooms

6:49 PM
but so do you mean we should move to multiple accounts regardless of what other fixes we make?

no i just meant that a userscript that actually listens to the MS websocket rather than parsing would be good regardless
we just need to consider if during a spam wave we care about the non-CHQ users getting their reports
i.e. do the site specific reports really make a difference at that volume
if so then multiple accounts would be worth following up with

fp feedback received on Cron jobs showing pending status [MS]

if we can cope with the response in a timely fashion the need to report to other rooms diminishes but of course there's also a limit to what's humanly possible
but in other words a spam wave during active hours will be easier to cope with if we get reports in more or less real time, and a spam wave which exceeds our capacity (because it's so big, or because it's during hours when nobody is here) it probably doesn't matter that the reporting to other rooms takes time (as long as we eventually catch up!)

the MS websocket API was a bit yucky the last time i used it, so maybe some work there is in order also
it was mostly just actioncable being yucky of course
@tripleee that is a good point which is that eventually catching up doesnt happen if a restart occurs
saving/pickling the queue of messages is easy but kind of weird conceptually to me
like is that the right thing to do really

if you switch between clients you need to keep state somehow anyway
not sure what could be done with socketscience but the client can't easily pick up its old messages to itself after a restart, can it? (I guess it could actually, the chatexchange code apparently just scrapes the room)

@Art is there any reason we are still running a fork of ChatExchange? It looks to me like they have roughly the same changes upstream now
plus as of earlier today my spiffy patch to combine messages so the bot can talk faster
I can't figure out how to get pip to install that for me in a Docker image though, otherwise I would update Halflife to do that
been struggling for the last hour or so, reverted Halflife to the old code base for now

@tripleee for multiple accounts it would keep both clients open at the same time -- the message queue is already separate from CE's normal one anyways

@SmokeDetector a
that one is fine
it might just be that slow to add it to the last_messages list
it needs to make a full round trip because it has to know the message id
so in theory that could happen after the message becomes visible for you
