12:20 PM
so... @Undo SO mods are declining ~20% of Smokey's custom flags. Helpful spam flags are keeping us off a flag ban, but if that's the way it's going I'm tempted to disable those flags for SO

@doppelgreener I thought it we could edit the rude out it was supposed to be fp-

@ArtOfCode SO Mods are generally fickle on custom flags

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad ns for domain in answer (1): Find a line and modify it in a csv file given an input by Art Mieussens on stackoverflow.com

You can expect a 5-10% decline rate I'd say

1/5 flags declined is a little bit worrying

there's a bunch declined with "this was indeed a correct spam flag", which... okay, but the point of that flag is not to say whether or not it was correct, but to get some human attention for the post to make sure everything is as it should be
if it is, fine, but that shouldn't be a reason to decline it - it achieved the aim of getting human eyes on

might need to raise this with the SO mods directly

smokey raises custom mod-flags?

12:26 PM
and more to the point, this is a big part of the transparency that we were asked for on MSE
@double-beep yup

mind, you might get contradicting opinions, so the best way would probably to raise this with the SO mods and ask them if collectively they'd like these flags or not

@ArtOfCode does it matter if flags are declined? As long as you don't actually run any danger of being flag banned, which you said spam flags protect you from, why is it a problem?

@terdon Those spam flags aren't guaranteed to protect us from it. I haven't actually done the math, but a quick look looked like we're uncomfortably close

Who casts these?

The custom flags? Smokey itself

I haven't understood when it does it

It should be possible to exempt smokey from the flag ban, right? Have you asked the team about that? Might be the simpler solution.

@double-beep this page is a log of all the custom flags it's cast, including the post and site it cast on

flag ban threshold is 25% in a week. Smokey raises the custom flag + 1 spam flag on autoflag posts. So in theory if 20% of the custom flags get declined we'd need one hell of a bad luck streak to get flag banned, but it's possible.

@terdon Haven't asked, no. Dunno if that's possible, but could be worth looking at

@ArtOfCode Might be simpler than trying to get the 184, or however many they are, SO mods to remember to treat these flags specially. Especially considering those people need to go through hundreds a day.

There's also a confluence with how flags get handled. I've gotten close to the flag ban because I had 200 some custom flags pending and a couple of those got declined in a subsequent week. So depending on the flag queue size that might come into it
There are 26 SO mods

@terdon Aye, there is that. The really simple solution is to turn those flags off for SO, but I'd rather not do that if it can be avoided.

Looking a bit more deeply... none have been declined since we changed the message. Which could just be coincidence, but we'll see.

@Magisch Personally, I would object to anything requiring special treatment for a class of flag. First because it's too hard to keep track of and it's easy to not realize that this flag is a special one. Secondly because I feel that's the wrong approach. Flags are flags and shouldn't have special categories.
2
@ArtOfCode Is that the very clear and explicit message I see in the page you linked to which explains exactly why the flag was raised?

Current message is this:
> Charcoal project members cast <spam/abusive> flags on this post, but at least one subsequent reviewer isn't confident that's the right decision. Please review and undelete the post if necessary; see charcoal-se.org/smokey/Auto-Mod-Flags for more details about this flag.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted website in body (99): Colourful dots material by 22melloja on blender.SE

12:38 PM
@ArtOfCode Yeah, that's great!

@terdon I can't speak to how it's handled internally, but I used to get quite a few random declines on my serial voting flags. After talking to some of the mods, I don't know what was discussed internally, but I haven't gotten any declines unless it was a mistaken flag (from my perspective) since

Previous message that we had declines for was this:
> This post had 1 spam/abusive flag(s) cast on it by Charcoal members and has since been deleted, but was ultimately judged not to have been spam. Please review whether spam flags - and the penalty that comes with them - are appropriate for this post - you can let us know in chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/11540 if the flags were inappropriate. If you're wondering WTF this flag is, see charcoal-se.org/smokey/Auto-Mod-Flags for details.

Yeah, the new one's clearer.

aye, definitely

@ArtOfCode "to get some human attention for the post" -> see this post by Shog9, in which he says "Over time, the flag system has evolved from a rather opaque 'I saw a problem, please do something' system into a way for everyone to work hand-in-hand with the elected moderators." This seems to mean that generic "problem halp!" flags are no longer welcome, and that raising the correct flag is even more important than recognizing a problem exists.

@RobertColumbia That's what "other" flags are for - problems that aren't covered by a specific flag type. As long as you explain what the problem is and what needs to happen, you can use 'em for... basically anything that needs a moderator

12:44 PM
fp- feedback received

@Magisch yes, but people don't read 'em

@terdon Yes, this is potentially an abuse of power. Compare various corrupt political structures, e.g. where reporting police misconduct causes you to be imprisoned. We shouldn't tell mods "Oh, this is an SD flag, SD is allowed to raise flags that would get you or me special treatment, because SD is special."

@Magisch Nobody reads those. There is no notification for them, so they will only be read if a user happens to remember to go check their flags page. The vast majority never do.
@RobertColumbia Exactly. And while it's actually true and SD is special, I still don't like the idea of treating it so :)

I meant "that would get you or me flag banned, because SD is special."

@ArtOfCode I suspect this is a big reason the flags haven't been declined recently. Remember, we had a couple SO mods come in here and ask what the flag was telling us previously.
That being said, I don't think I've seen the new one in the wild yet.

If the declines start again, I think a discussion on meta is going to be needed. There were mods that understood the message and mods that didn't. Meta will also slow down the discussion a bit so a complete answer can be provided instead of a fast paced chat session. That didn't go the best with the last SO mod that brought up this message. Both sides got frustrated during the conversation.

@Undo It did work for more contentious and less useful purposes, though

Moderators in general are becoming more and more susceptible to bikeshedding. Everyone needs to have their opinion.

Hello everyone! Looks like I need some help with the metasmoke account settings.
Seeing some discussion about autoflagging, I wanted to check my preferences and found the wizard that says will connect my metasmoke account to the SE one. just for flags, or feedback too?

(if you don't know what I'm talking about, that's also a valid answer :) )

Sorry - not quite sure what all it serves. Mostly for flags, I guess. I discovered it through the Advance Feedback userscript, and it suggested I setup an account.

@tripleee on that topic, is it by design that chat messages that aren't replies end up being comments?

kinda sorta

Zoe
Doesn't that just cause confusion?

if they mention a feedback type, they get automagically associated with a report via some kind of dark magic

Zoe
Oh, that would explain it

Oooh, two more elections starting today

Zoe
the problem here is that it's cross-room apparently
It somehow ended up on a (finances.SE?) report while the comment was in SOBotics... So if anything that mentions a feedback type could end up as a comment, that would mean a lot of possibly unrelated comments on various reports

There are several people in this room running in the SO election. Good luck to all of you.

I got the error "Your account is not approved to use the write API." when trying to connect to my Stack exchange account.
Would that be my stack overflow account or my metasmoke account?

oh right that's a thing
fixed

@ArtOfCode Those nav changes weren't intentional, were they? I like subdividing the tools menu, but now the topbar is so wide.
