No, they don't need to be, usually. Markdown is a pain in the *. Given that you're probably going to change it, you might want to cover the --- case for avoiding this. However, you can't just escape all -. The Markdown converter only touches it if it's exactly ---. It may need to be followed by a \S like this, but not like --- this --- .
