there's a way to get spam flags invalidated by posting something innocuous, then editing it to be spam, then rolling back, then editing it to be spam again

1:58 AM
@gparyani Yes, this has been an obvious exploit since they first implemented invalidating spam flags in a rollback. It's one of the reasons that we don't edit out spam content. If a spammer engages in it, raise a custom mod-flag, which are not invalidated upon rollback.

What is body_summary in findspam.py? The initial summary we get from the realtime socket?
@CalvT Yeah, that's super helpful, I feel dumb for not looking there first. Thanks

Correct, the WS sends a truncated body

2:13 AM
k
And some checks run against that truncated body?

I don't know if any do, actually
In theory if they did, and it tripped something, then the entire queue would be processed immediately
Same is true for titles and usernames
What are you modifying in there?

I'm not, I'm just looking around
BTW there are 24 rules where body_summary is True
Oh they make sense
Why would that flush the queue?

To make it get reported faster

But why the whole queue rather then 1 site?

No i meant the queue for that site

2:20 AM
Oh. Where's the logic for that?

ummmm uh oh
something looks wrong in bodyfetcher, I think a chunk of code got clobbered

Glad I could help?

Oh wait nope
I'm so used to my local changes that I've had sitting around for 3 months I forgot
It's actually in ws.py for some reason
The logic is trash though since it runs checks twice

Well, "accept PAYPAL", by itself, has >2k hits on SE, but with a dollar amount, it might be specific enough.

Yeah that's why I thought it might be worth adding...

@quartata Making the \d+ non-greedy doesn't seem to have much benefit, given the .{0,20}.
@quartata Only 2 hits in MS for a search within bodies and only 1 for titles (duplicating one of the body matches).

@tripleee can you give me other examples of such posts?

how open should we be about these things? I silently committed a CVE fix to another comment earlier this week but I'm thinking we should have a procedure which should be as open as possible without being sensationalist or anything like that
@AJ there was a ticket which was raised by NobodyNada I believe, hang on

@AJ it crashed while you weren't using PyCharm?

@tripleee Ping and/or email me and/or Art

it's still hardcoded to look for mentions of Japan so we should probably find other keywords to add, or reshape it into something like "90% of Post is Gratuitously Capitalized Like This"

@NobodyNada yup
But it kinda got not-responding first and then crashed.

@Undo when I check in a fix, or when I receive the email from Github, or when I think enough time has passed that the drama is over?

Security is a thing you can be open about after stuff gets fixed.

@AJ are you able to get any useful logs? The built-in Event View program sometimes has useful information

@tripleee as soon as feasible, esp. if you think it's a threat to MS data

A J
@NobodyNada How do I get the logs? It got rebooted before I could take a picture of the crash message.

5:09 AM
I'm not sure I'm able to assess the impact in either case, Github said update to this version and so I did

@AJ Open up Event Viewer

MS has a crapload of API tokens - no need to worry about my time too much on that kind of thing.

A blue screen will be have a "critical" status. I'd also recommend checking slightly before the blue screen to see if you can find any interesting errors

the Keybase transcript has some notes

I can triage these things fairly quick, but I only check Keybase about once a day when it sends me an email with an inbox count
maybe that's once a week
(and I can't hit Keybase from my work machine for a few reasons, which also makes things harder)

A J
@NobodyNada I am not on my computer right now. I am at work.

Don't really know how that works, other than not being dynamic on our side

A J
@NobodyNada Also, I have to tell ya that Windows prompted a message "check for Windows errors" after rebooting.

5:18 AM
@AJ yeah, it does that after a blue screen. IIRC at least on Windows 7 there was a "show details" option that'd give you error codes as well
@AJ I guess a RAM issue is plausible, maybe try memtest86+

A J
@NobodyNada Ah. I didn't right click on it.

@AJ It was under a little disclosure arrow on Win7

A J
ok

if you want to try memtest86+, you download the image, burn it onto a thumb drive or CD, boot from the drive, and let it run overnight or something (it'll just keep running for as long as you let it)

A J
@NobodyNada It won't damage the hardware, will it? It says it will create a load on the memory.

5:22 AM
@AJ no, memory is designed for that
@AJ yep, here's a fun read: superuser.com/questions/907474/… (to be fair, memtest is a much higher load than hibernation, but it is still nothing compared to DRAM refresh)

A J

@NobodyNada OK.

@AJ From a UI point of view, if FIRE was capable of casting flags for you on the site you moderate, would you want some additional notification or indication that the current site is the one you moderate? Personally, I'd think that the large site name/logo at the top of the FIRE popup would be sufficient indication (it's not like people are going to forget they are moderators). However, I guess it's possible to get into the zone such that you might not notice if there's a lot of SD reports.

A J

oh

@Makyen leaves comment Hey, where'd that shiny diamond come... oh, right.

:-)
I'm asking for input wrt. the UI, as it's certainly possible for a userscript to cast such flags, even for moderators. Thus, that may happen in the future and I desire the UI to reflect what people want, but to also reduce/prevent inadvertent actions (i.e. casting binding flags when not intended), while not making it inconvenient to use (e.g. having a confirmation popup every time you click to flag on the site you moderate).

I agree with that, but I'd also like to be responsive to what others desire. My impression has been that there has been a significant reluctance to facilitate casting flags for moderators on their sites. Thus, I'm trying to tread a bit carefully. Personally, if I was a mod, I'd find it quite frustrating that the tool doesn't work on the site where I'm most effective.
