@SurajRao I disagree. The previous post had a comment on it which only linked to help/promotion, and not the meta question, which provides additional information. It was also my intent to provide a followup with an example of what minimal disclosure could be (which I've done).

@SmokeDetector k
Ah, the joys of HNQ.

@Makyen fair enough.. But OP clearly did not read the help center. Not sure if they will read the meta post now. Or maybe I have become too cynical

@SurajRao They may, or they may not. While I view it as a responsibility to provide the information (or links to it), and help educate them if they appear to want to learn, they have to actually move towards learning and compliance with the policy. If they don't, then we have effective methods of dealing with that outcome too.
For example, I left a similar comment on 4 of the 5 posts of a user 2 days ago. They chose to not make any edits, in spite of having been on the site afterwards. So, I reported them here. Now those posts are deleted.
Basically, we're probably thinking similar things, just with different levels for how much to try to educate.

@Undo What worries me about MS is that we have several users here in the EU, and at least one of the admins is there, too. It looks like organizations outside the EU have to have a representative in the EU to receive fines related to noncompliance with the GDPR, and that could lead to one of our users getting fined.

I doubt anyone is going to sue us over this

we don't have any personally identifiable information which isn't already public, I don't pretend to understand GDPR properly but if we are screwed then SO/SE is screwed too, don't you think?

I'm sorting some of the GDPR thing for our company (so hope I've got a grip on it!), and the main point of it is that we shouldn't be collecting data about users without the users specific consent (opt-in, not opt-out). We collect data via the SE api, so any data that way is SE's problem. Then all the users on MS have opted-in to providing data (as far as I know). I'm pretty sure we're in the clear.

things to think about: are we exposing something which on SE is behind a password or something but which we make available without authentication, for example?

10:58 AM
Well... deleted posts, which normally you need 10k for.
Also technically who flagged a post, which is usually only available to mods.

I'm still gone just chiming in for the GDPR problem since I'm directly affected by it. I'm my company's data protection officer and in charge of implementing the GDPR changes that come in. Charcoal is definitely affected. One vindictive spammer could probably shut this whole project down with some targeted posting of PII and then suing us over retaining it. Some food for thought, but generally speaking consider that from now on ALL form of information directly relatable to a person falls
under all of the new protection, including opt-in vs opt-out consent. It might be needed for someone from charcoal to reach out to SE to talk to their DPO about what that means for something like metasmoke. Good luck.

So the scenario we're talking about here is if a spammer/troll posts some info that they don't have a license for, and then we get done for retaining it after SE has deleted it, correct?

tpu- by ByteCommander

Does CC BY-SA say anything about that?
In the vein of "Once you have submitted a post, you have licensed the content to the $SITENAME$ community at large under the CC BY-SA license"

11:04 AM
Consider following scenario:
1. Some spammer really hates charcoal
2. They post PII of someone they know to be sensitive to it in a spam post
3. We record it
4. The spammer anonymously alerts the person they posted PII from
5. We or SE is obligated to comply and prove to have in place a compliance procedure for any form of deletion request
We'll also have to remove and prove to have removed the data from all backups
just some food for thought, heading out again.

Is that even possible (proving to have cleared backups)?

@JF solution: make the only representative of Charcoal someone under 18 not in the EU

J F
@Mithrandir the rep has to be in the EU.

Yeah, nice try Mith

I wonder if Charcoal needs to worry any way? It's not precise but I wouldn't describe the data collected as large scale as per the third last paragraph: eugdpr.org/gdpr-faqs.html and I guess they do that not to get outrage from millions of small business owners needing to waste their time complying.

11:18 AM
@JF If we're trying to avoid being forced to comply...

JAD
@PeterJ 100k records is somewhat large scale. And arguably it's systematic

@JAD but those 100k records aren't personal information
