[feature-request] for Smokey: Allow me to leave custom reasons when blacklisting a user so anyone asking why can find out easily in cases of less-than-obvious spam. I took down a nearly undetectable spammer a couple of days ago and would really want to help other users understand why this user's posts are bad if it comes up again.

@bwDraco That'd be pretty hard to do, and would end up mostly invisible, considering that the user blacklists are stored in a human-unreadable pickle file on individual Smokey instances, and not synced via git.

in Root Access, 2 days ago, by bwDraco
Flagged as spam, despite no software being mentioned (see also superuser.com/questions/1230746/…). You may elude other reviewers, but you're not getting past the Dragon! — bwDraco 9 secs ago
See the ensuing chat discussion. Established users were in disbelief. A mod later validated the flags.

@tripleee Oh. PyCharm has a lot of inspections built in - code formatting with PEP8 compliance, automatic resolution of whether things are being accessed before having values assigned, incorrect value types being assigned (hence the type hints), and a ton of other inspections. However, when I test the code it always fails to run on some inspections the way I have PyCharm configured, so I have to suppress the inspections.
Those comments specifically suppress certain types of inspections, either on that one statement, or within a code block (like inside an if statement or a try/except in its entirely), or within a whole function in the code.

@DavidPostill We've got a bunch of convex mirrors at BigCo. They're awesome, you can walk around corners at full speed with full confidence you aren't going to run into someone doing the same
They put them at every intersection of cube wall hallways, doors, etc. Has to be five hundred, at least. Things are awesome.
also helps keep the guy with the riding vacuum from breaking your ankles

@Undo I hope you didn't buy then from that spammer :)

nah, they bought them back when they built the site. Originally there was an automated retrieval system and little robots would be going down the aisles.

Should we prevent MS from performing a search for everything when clicking on the "search" tab before entering anything to search for? It can sometimes can take quite a while to load the results, which causes the search page to take forever to load.

@NobodyNada +1

I've also noticed that the homepage occasionally takes 15-20 seconds to load, due to this line. Maybe we can cache that or something?

J F
@NobodyNada I think MS should get a new homepage that’s more newcomer-friendly so that wouldn’t get hit as much.
On another note, READi is awesome and when I get back from vacation, I’ll try to prepare a PR with the new features I added.

8:53 PM
Oh, thank you! I need to do more work on it sometime...
I'm working on push notifications BTW

What is READi?

It's an app that lets you flag Smokey reports from iOS

Is it on the app store?

No, not at the moment
I'm under 18 so putting it on the app store would be fairly complicated

So I'd have to install through xcode.

8:56 PM
Yep

I wish I know how to do iOS development

@NobodyNada I've done it. It's not.

J F
Every time I’ve done a project with a language i didn’t like so far (Swift and Ruby), I’ve started to like them…

(probably too niche to be worth putting on the store, but really don't worry about dealing with Apple. They're nice folk)

@Undo how'd you do it?

9:03 PM
@NobodyNada technically parents set up the account, which entailed "hey can I have a credit card for this"

Makes sense, thanks! I might then have to transfer membership of my developer account or something though

There's no ID verification step or anything (or wasn't in 2011). I've talked directly with App Review folks, and they're fine with it as long as I let them talk with my dad first. He says "here talk to my technical department" and it's fine.
Remember: Apple is not in the business of turning away developers.
2011 was back when you needed an account just to run your app on a real device. Good times
The amount of time 12-year-old me spent trying to get codesigning right. Ugh.
be very grateful that Xcode pretty much does it for you now

yeah, I started towards the end of the Xcode 4 days, which was IIRC just before they started doing automatic codesigning

Yep. End of 3 for me.

Deputy on Apple
deputy isn't really much of a feat anymore with core :/

9:15 PM
Flags are still spread pretty thin for there being 300+ a day
I only get 1-10 a day

sure but it only takes about a month or two of that to get 80 flags on the higher traffic sites

Yep.

I've got to go now (for a family gathering and then a church event.) See you tomorrow!
Thank you, @Undo and @JF!

Yep! :)
