Quick question for everyone: What would you consider Smoke Detector's most impressive accomplishment in terms of code? This question is about Smoke Detector (so, Python), not metasmoke or the userscripts.
2

... that you can actually write something useful in Python </jk>

On a more serious note: implementing self-modifying code is quite impressive.

@Glorfindel Really? I was doing that in assembler 30 years ago ...

I know, but it's something you don't see that often.

1:52 PM
@Glorfindel Can you give an example?
[10 marks]

Mostly because modern programming languages have features which make self-modifying code not necessary anymore.
@Henders the blacklist.

JIT compilers for example.

@Henders I did that once for a school project ... used asm to re-write itself to a different block of memory and then execute itself again

@CaffeineAddiction Neat, so it just jumped around forever?

1:55 PM
I'd never really thought about that but modifying itself is pretty cool.

A link to my videos? o.O

WTH? How...

I've done IBM Assember and Intel Assembly. I hate both. With a passion.

2:02 PM
That lasted two years!

@Henders do you have a CS degree? thought ASM was pretty much a requirement

No, I have degree in Music Computing.

not sure what that is

@Henders Music Computing? What is that?

2:04 PM
Yeah, it's like half and half of the degrees basically.. with a little wedge of 'Music Computing'. Writing code to produce music.
So it wasn't so standard CS to be honest...

so did they go through datastructures and stuff? did you learn how to build a linked list from scratch? or how a binary tree works?

Yeah I mean, it was alright. I'm a musician in my spare time (play saxophone) so I found it a bit of a reach to call it 'music' but I think it's quite a personal line that you draw between what you think is music and what is not.
@CaffeineAddiction Yeah we did like the basics... Learned some Java and C# but I spend most of my life writing PHP :P

@Henders im sorry

It didn't work out badly for me in the end really. I wasn't sure which way to go career wise (music or computing) and it helped me make my mind up which was good.

2:09 PM
@Henders not much money in php though ... you ever thought about learning Nodejs or Python (Flask)?

Yeah I dunno really. I'd like to do something much more objecty than PHP. I loved Java because it was much more precise. I've never really investigated NodeJs. Python is fun but I don't know that much of it :P

Personally I avoid JAVA like the plague ... a lot of Java code gets outsourced
Nodejs works a lot like clientside js ... just some new libs and flow patterns
Python is also pretty easy to learn, awesome community in freenode IRC
... just never bring up the idea of parsing xml w/ regex ... the world will end

Haha,

I learned NodeJS during a job interview. The position I applied for was a python position. The coding session was in NodeJS. Needless to say, that interview went poorly.

during the interview?! That's bold :P

2:14 PM
@Andy you can learn NodeJS pretty fast but yah thats rough

They never said the coding would be in NodeJS. I applied to a Python position so assumed the code section would be in Python. Bad assumption to make. Now I've learned to ask, just to confirm.

I currently have been spending too much time with NodeJS so I am forcing myself to go back to one of my own personal projects to relearn python ... knock off some of the rust

My goal is to learn some Ruby by the end of the year. I've never used it.

@Andy yah, Python position giving you a code exercise in NodeJS ... seems like there was an error somewhere
Ruby is another one on my list ... I have looked at it a few times but never really done anything with it

I finished installing a copy of MS on localhost last night. I want to contribute to MS so I've got to learn how ruby on rails works :P

2:23 PM
MS?

@CaffeineAddiction Probably. Both me and the interviewer seemed pretty frustrated by the end of that 45 minute session. I just thanked them for their time, chalked it up to a crappy learning experience and avoiding putting in more applications to that company. :)

@CaffeineAddiction MetaSmoke

Apparently Art only started learning in January :O

2:30 PM
yah, once you know one language picking up another is usualy pretty easy
bet you money in the 45m of that interview @Andy had if-then/for-loops/console.log functonality working

Yeah it's great. Even if you're not fluent with another language you can draw assumptions based on what you do know...

The problem with Node is having to learn all the ridiculous tools in its ecosystem
Like Babel and what not

3:04 PM
@CaffeineAddiction I did. :) That was about it though.

I think that shows good programming ability though. Give them something they have no idea about and ask them to use it...

"we leverage the accuracy of each existing reason to come up with a weight indicating how certain the system is that a post is spam. If this value exceeds a specific threshold, the system will cast up to three spam flags on the post." - [ source ]

@quartata just because there is a lot of php code out there does not mean its good money or a good language. If you look at developers pay by language php is almost always near the bottom.

I didn't say it was a good language.
And I suspect there's reasons other than the language itself why the pay is different

well yah, its because most people that get a degree in CS wouldnt even consider a job in php

Like, people who use more sophisticated frameworks are probably companies that are just in general looking for higher skilled programmers and so paying more
But last I checked the pay wasn't insanely different between PHP and ASP.NET

4:04 PM
difference of about 30%
or more, depending
average salary for a php developer in my area is 55k to 75k a year ... average salary for someone working in nodejs is 95k to 120k a year
like you said, it might just be diff skill of programers too ... because most people I know that are still working in php just have a high school diploma
... not to say that all php devs are like that

Full stack PHP dev though..

php has always been fullstack ... its server side rendering
I mean I guess you could do an angularjs SPA w/ a php backend but ... gag

oh, and bug Undo incessantly - but now you can bug either of us incessantly :)
