[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in body: Meteor observe not working properly in 1.6 by Petr24 on stackoverflow.com

12:36 AM
@SmokeDetector why

@TetsuyaYamamoto Body - Position 3176-3208: hack is to wrap the “Meteor.call
fp- by Tetsuya Yamamoto

@ArtOfCode Possible API V1/V2.0 issue (potentially related to the other feedback issue): For feedbacks posted by FIRE, a couple fields/properties have null values. The two properties which are null, that I'd expect to be valid, are: post_link and user_name. These fields are valid with other feedback methods & don't appear to be feedback method dependent. FIRE appears to expect user_name to be valid in all cases, which implies that property shouldn't be null. Should these be valid?
@ArtOfCode Possible API V2.0 issue (possibly/probably related to the other 404 issue): I'd considered getting a list of users from /api/v2.0/users, but that also returns "No Route". I would use this to fill in the feedbacks where user_nameis null, but there is a valid user_id.

@Makyen semi-expected
@Makyen and correct, needs deploying
Those fields are null because they actually are null, in the database. We stopped keeping user_name on Feedback when we started linking metasmoke and SE accounts, because we can just keep a user_id on Feedback and the User model stores all the chat user data.
That does cause issues with the API, though, so - again when MS gets deployed - we're starting to fill in user_name again

@ArtOfCode OK. Sounds reasonable. Then that looks like, for the future, FIRE doesn't need to get the users from /api/v2.0/users and match the user name up to the ID in order to know which feedbacks were made by the current user.

@Makyen shouldn't do, no - user_name will exist, it just doesn't right now

12:50 AM
@ArtOfCode Good. Then it's a no-op as far as updating FIRE. It should "just work" when MS is deployed. It's not unreasonable to just record the ID. Converting to a user name is something that it's not unreasonable to expect the client to do.

@Undo huh. Okay, weird

@ArtOfCode Does config need updated again, too?

@Undo uh. Lemme check
@Undo yes, will do. Probably a good idea to save this deploy until you've got a fair bit of spare time, there's also a long-running migration in there

@ArtOfCode That'd be now

yay

:)
Kinda rare these days :(

[ metasmoke ] ci/circleci failure on 6647ab4: Your tests failed on CircleCI

I got a consulting gig, still working my regular job, and university. Free time don't come cheap.
Bah
oh dear, actual test failures, this'll be fun

@ArtOfCode art is humbug confirmed

@ArtOfCode congrats

@ArtOfCode Cool! Software consulting?

1:24 AM
@Undo As-yet-unconfirmed - this literally happened about two hours ago. Ex-colleague started an online business and asked for various consulting help, so I stuck my head in the virtual door and she got back to me a couple hours ago saying yes please. Some sort of technical consulting - not sure if software or just general "make it work", but I'm getting paid either way so I'm not sure I mind

@ArtOfCode Hah, cool. Consulting is where the money is.

@Undo and the referrals :)

1:28 AM
I gotta figure out the university thing. Having a hard time getting admissions people to talk to me, which is... not an issue I anticipated.

@Undo I... may or may not be able to help. I know almost nothing about the US system.
The UK makes it easy: one application to one centralised organisation, who send it on to the universities you want to apply to.

Talk to admissions people? Why?

@ArtOfCode Sounds so nice.

Texas has a unified application for a lot of the schools...

@Catija Stuff like "I'd like to sit in on a class" gets met with "we don't have any 'student staff' in that class", which is irritating.
Buuuut I kinda accidentally found out that my corporate badge works on the university doors... so that's an option

1:32 AM
@Undo Ouch. That's worse than my university's ID card FU.
TL;DR: there's a range that's meant to be staff-only, that they accidentally issued about four or five of to people in my year.

@Undo :/ Small school?

Even better - they can't flip the "student" bit back on without also flipping all the "privilege" bits. Why I don't know

@ArtOfCode Those HID badges are kinda weird.
(too late)
I'm pretty sure that BigCo badges are master keys to doors, though - I've had mine work at another company, too
Part of me thinks it's an overflow vulnerability or something in the lock system, and my super-high employee ID breaks stuff.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword with email in answer: Can ATP be synthesized and consumed? by Marc C. E. Wagner on chemistry.SE

@Undo Plot twist: BigCo makes the door control units, and makes their badges master keys for them
that particular BigCo is anti-consumer enough to do it

1:40 AM
@ArtOfCode Which particular one?

@Undo your particular one

Eh, we've gotten better in the last few years. Spinning off the Enterprise folks helped a lot
metasmoke ready to go?

@Undo no, failing tests
let's see if this build fixes it

@Undo speaking of, how are the laptops y'all make these days? I know they used to be pretty terrible; any better more recently?

1:47 AM
[ metasmoke ] ci/circleci failure on b30826e: Your tests failed on CircleCI

Bah. Good to deploy, @Undo. That's a test bug, not an implementation bug.

@ArtOfCode I've got a company-issued ZBook 15 G3, solid as heck. It's also like $1800, but still.

unsurprisingly, nonexistent users don't have usernames

Dad has an Elitebook, also awesome
@ArtOfCode SSDs have been a great field-leveler, IMO
(still prefer my MacBook, but that's an awful high bar)

@Undo they certainly help

1:50 AM
Dad's been using HP laptops for the better part of two decades, and this is the first he's been recommending to friends. Something along the lines of this: amazon.com/HP-EliteBook-Z9X37UP-i5-6300U-Windows/dp/B0743YDYY9/…
Pretty sure this is the SKU I have: store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/…

@Undo Neat. Context: sister is looking for a new laptop, so I'm trying to work out what's not terrible these days
I lost track of the laptop market when I went desktop

@ArtOfCode I'd stay away from convertibles, but other than that most laptops should be okayish these days
