@Andy so wait a sec -- are we going to use Serverless? That's Node
I assumed we were going to AWS Lambda's Python thingy

@quartata serverless is a framework for AWS Lambda (and I presume for similar products too). It supports python+DynamoDB, which is what we're going to be using

Well the docs are structured a little weird but this sure looks like Node to me
oh OK I found some python examples

@ProcessedMeat I did not expect people to be so insistent on doing things the wrong way...

I like the abstraction layer serverless.yml provides
but if this works by running a Node server that forks off Python children that's going to be slow as shit, I'm sorry
makes me a little uneasy
@Mithrandir I don't think they actually get that voting to delete doesn't punish the spammer at all
or that if a mod did that they'd dispute flags on the post

2:09 AM
We are using server less. The lambda code is written in python

yeah I figured that out
sorry

Lambda supports multiple languages...js, python, Java and C# I believe

I know that: I was more interested in how Serverless works since it's a layer on top of that
I don't know which of those are dependencies for whatever bootstrap code that goes onto AWS or which are just part of the toolchain

OK. What is you point? The python code is deployed to aws. There is no node layer. Serveless is the deployment mechanism

ohhhh
then that's fine
I thought Serverless added in an extra layer at runtime too

2:13 AM
The actual code in aws is my python code

so all the node stuff is just for the deployment CLI

Yeah

OK. I can provide more details tomorrow night when I'm not on mobile. If you have questions, put them on the Helios post instead of in here where I'll lose track of them with other notifications I receive

don't worry I get it now
I was just being very stupid

Cool
Back to family time!

2:15 AM
@Andy enjoy

@quartata TBH I only worked out what serverless actually is/what it does when I had a proper look at it about an hour ago

most of it appears to be static though

I wonder what software they use for their docs, or whether it's custom. I really like how it uses skeleton loading.

2:34 AM
@quartata once we get these chatcommand tests fixed, what else is left to test? I'm not sure where we need to go next to increase our coverage

chatcommunicate

which is its own black magic.
just saying.

luckily it's all my black magic
I'd like to think it's not that bad but eh

we still use ChatExchange right?

mmhmm
this is my chatcommunicate though: github.com/quartata/SmokeDetector/blob/master/…

2:40 AM
then it's still a variant of Black Magic
because that's technically what CE is
it works but how it works is...
well, unknown.
:P

more like eigengrau magic
pure darkness
luckily I'm going to be mostly mocking the CE parts
I care mostly about command dispatch logic

@quartata pure darkness is black.

Eigengrau (German: "intrinsic gray", lit. "own gray"; pronounced [ˈʔaɪ̯gn̩ˌgʁaʊ̯]), also called Eigenlicht (Dutch and German: "own light"), dark light, or brain gray, is the uniform dark gray background that many people report seeing in the absence of light. The term Eigenlicht dates back to the nineteenth century, but has rarely been used in recent scientific publications. Nowadays, the phenomenon is more commonly referred to as "visual noise" or "background adaptation". Eigengrau is perceived as lighter than a black object in normal lighting conditions, because contrast is more important to the...
actually pretty cool
it turns out eyes are very complicated
to the surprise of many including myself

Wow
Now that I think about it, when you close your eyes it isn't actually black

makes you think

2:44 AM
@quartata yes, but...

nice

^ the blackest substance

but have you seen

@quartata yeah
Reminder to both of us: we need to go through and make sure that all the old code is removed
E.g. is the is_report function in chatcommands being used?

How about the stuff that was added after the fork? Are they tended to?

5:31 AM
tp- by paper1111

@angussidney I'll take a look but probably not: new idiom is if get_report_data(...):

@paper1111 most of it has been added (user privileges and blacklists, etc), and the changes to the !!/whois command have been incorporated but not fully tested yet.

@angussidney Ok great

ok definitely not: all that function does is check if the argument is None

really all the non commands should be out of there: blacklist handling and send_metasmoke_feedback should be in different places but I don't feel like moving them now since there's an 80% chance I'll do more significant refactors to both down the line

@paper1111 also, I just added you to the /people page, surprised you wern't there already

@angussidney Ah ok nice

@quartata yeah, right now we should focus on getting this merged. We can always create a new GH issue with stuff that we still want to do
Anything to do with blacklists isn't going to last long anyway

@Mithrandir I hate to be mean about this but SFF seems to be really weird about site moderation
this is kinda especially egregious IMO
they're making more work for their mods by bypassing the usual spammer punishments and yet the mods are defending that

@quartata yeah. It is. In more than one way.
And the Charcoal voting ring descends ;P

honestly I wonder if you could ask a friendly CM to explain the situation better -- maybe they'll listen

My go-to CM is no longer working at SE anymore, so sigh
And I seriously doubt that it will help.
A CM's word doesn't carry the usual weight that it does elsewhere on Meta.SFF, unfortunately. The Meta.SFF people are very stubborn.

6:07 PM
also has anyone pointed out that if the post was autoflagged you only need 3 humans anyways
or that they could ask for the red flag count to be lowered like on Workplace
I mean if the issue really is efficiency and not something else

No, and Scifi.SE doesn't usually get a lot of spam - more trolls.
Not a lot of autoflagged posts there.

also you should probably point out that red flags take posts off of the front page
delete votes won't

@quartata done, /admin/keys/mine

@ArtOfCode thanks

6:10 PM
tpu- by DavidPostill

@quartata ? I don't see mods defending that point of view, rather the opposite.

The issue with spammers potentially not getting IP-blocked only matters if SFF has spammers who post more than once. But as far as I know, they almost only use one-off disposable accounts (and in the rare cases of a determined troll making multiple red-flaggable posts from the same account, the IP block doesn't work anyway). Plus, I generally do a sweep every so often and destroy the accounts of recent spammers. So while of course you're right, I'm not sure how much of an issue this is: either way, the post is deleted and its contents hidden, which is what counts. — Rand al'Thor ♦ 20 hours ago

Y'all: gentle reminder that outreach doesn't tend to make us very popular. It's good that Mithrandir was the one to post this, because he's actually part of the community in question, but for Charcoal as a whole it's better for us to stay out of these things.

yea

In some cases outreach or gentle reminders on how to deal with spam are appropriate, but they don't need to mention Charcoal. Quote network policy, use that reasoning rather than "I'm part of a group that deals with spam so I know better than all of you". I know that's not what anyone actually says or means, but that's how it comes across to communities, which does not make us their favourite people.

@Mithrandir Your call. It's almost a day old now, so I'd guess 99% of anyone who was going to get involved there have already read it. If you think it'll make a difference, go for it, but it probably doesn't matter a huge amount.
Idea: what if we had a template for a "reminder on spam handling" post, that we could use and customise when we need it?

I elected to remove it, if only so that I'm not setting a precedent that we'd prefer not to have.

@Mithrandir :thumbsup:

@ArtOfCode sure; that sounds like it would be good, although yeah it's best for an actual member of the community to post it. It's kinda hard to see things like VTDs without being a member of the community though, I guess :P

@Mithrandir Aye, of course. I'm thinking just to get all the reasoning for everything that people shouldn't do into one post template that we can all refine and improve, and then we can pick the sections we need for a particular site/time.

@ArtOfCode You use Babel for MS, right?
Do you know how I can call Babel from in a JS script
the package setup of Babel is confusing as heck and googling things without getting garbage about Gulp is tricky

@quartata @JF?
I know it involves Yarn, Webpacker, and Node. Except for Node, I don't actually know the purpose of those components.
and there may be more of them

I'm just using Cake
