@SmokeDetector the Q&A accounts almost identical, I suspect created to troll the site
@SmokeDetector I've deleted my feedback on this and mod flagged instead

12:38 AM
@SmokeDetector this is mostly likely the holocaust troll
I'm going to comment on meta
actually looks like their chat has a mod in it right now, gonna hit them up

@SmokeDetector k
@quartata it is, I got a mod to check it

oh ok
I posted in their Time Machine room thingy too

I pinged the mod in the Teacher's Lounge - a room for mods, plus raised a mod flag. (I really only needed to do the latter one, but didn't think of it until after)

I'm aware of the existence of the TL :P
although I'm surprised you got confirmation so fast without having to get IPs from skeptics mods too
looks like they posted on history SE before with something more blatant

@quartata I wasn't, until I got a mdoship

12:49 AM
huh
I always thought it was one of those "worst-kept secret" things but maybe I'm around too many mods with loose tongues

I mustn't have been paying attention LOL

Isn't the room ID 4 or something?

Throwing an idea here that I intend to look at sometime:
There are folks who don't like mass-editing of older posts for things like grammar and spelling because it pollutes the activity tab for tags, irritating answerers.
Which makes sense
Further, the activity tab acts as, essentially, the sole method of oversight we have for edits.
(this is a >2k issue, primarily)
So, we can't just hide edits from the activity tab
Here's how one might solve that problem: Check whether an edit is trivial.
I think you could do it programmatically, and do a darn good job of it.
What I'm thinking:
You can't just use Levenshtein distance or something similarly simple, because a quick sentence restructure where you move chunks of words around - but don't change the meaning - is going to give you a distance indistinguishable from a substantial edit
And so we need a way to extract meaning from sentences.
Remember SyntaxNet‌?

wikipedia literally just gives you a box to check if it's a minor edit that shouldn't bump it to recentchanges
and yes, it gets abused by vandals all the time

@quartata yeah, people are nervous about abuse here.

What would be the purpose of this? SE would never go and implement it, and I don't see how it could help editors

@angussidney Don't know what implementation strategy would be.
This is more a "cool problem, real problem, what happens if we throw tech at it" rant
Anyway, could we get something useful about the underlying meaning and structure from SyntaxNet, then diff before/after? Could then do things like check synonym distance on changed words in the same positions, or get spellcheck suggestions on words before and see if they match the word after the edit.

You don't need to extract meaning from sentences, all you need is to measure similarity. Any word embedding would do the trick

2:19 AM
@quartata Yep. 'Meaning" is a bad word there

Cosine similarity between word2vecs

yep
@angussidney Honestly, purpose is twofold: (1) primarily because I think it'd be fun to try, (2) secondarily to show that there is a solution to this problem other than yelling at people who improve old posts.
Might be possible to fold back into Smokey. Don't know.

An ideal solution would be to change the way edits are displayed on the active tab. Instead of a full post view with a summary, tags, and votes, but make it say in one line 'angussidney edited [an answer on] How to write a question title? 3.1415926 seconds ago', and don't count it towards the 50? post limit before the page ends
That way edits are still visible, people don't complain about other stuff being pushed off the homepage, everyone wins

That... could work
'angussidney edited 2 posts 3.14 seconds ago'
Could even collapse it pretty easily
Hrmph

Not to say that your idea is bad.... I just don't see much point in it if SE is never going to go and implement it :)
After all, why isn't Smokey, natty etc already integrated?

2:28 AM
Don't know if we can get biggish changes like this either, but it'd definitely be easier
@angussidney Smokey doesn't gain much by being integrated, and we'd lose quite a bit. Autoflagging is the great compromise in my view, and it works decently well
Gives us/SE a good knob to turn for flag count
and allows us to stay nimble

Yeah, Smokey not so much, but Natty could work pretty well if it was implemented as a warning on the post

Not familiar with Natty. I probably should be.

All I know is that it works pretty well :)

@Undo It's in SOBotics

well, I know it exists. But don't know what the process for it looks like.

2:32 AM
I'm probably being a bit negative anyway, even if it was a userscript that we could download to make us think twice about small edits that would be cool

My view is that we shouldn't have to worry about making posts a little bit better.

Yeah, same here, but some people in the meta crowd may disagree :)

@Catija why?

3:56 AM
@Catija I don't see how it isn't?

Posting a new answer isn't interrupting a conversation.
Especially not on a question that's been dead for two years.

No, but it is inserting a random sentence about your bodily functions into a completely unrelated question.
They're just trolling, IMO, and deserve to be flagged as such.

@Catija That's like saying posting spam isn't interrupting the conversation on the question page. It's still unnecessary.

4:26 AM
@QPaysTaxes so I don't need to explain then?
I generally flag as spam in two scenarios: if the person is intentionally trying to spam, or if what they're doing is considered spam, and while they may not know that, the post is so low quality we may as well nuke it as spam
How I judge whether something fits into one of those categories is rather subjective
@QPaysTaxes I normally submit an edit or comment, then start flagging as spam if they continue to do so afterwards
Yeah, that makes sense
Everything is subjective I guess, and everyone has their own opinions
