@ShadowWizard that doesn't work ;)

@Glorfindel oh. I saw no spam there, just some random trolling, but not gibberish. Like asking "What is Trump eating today?" which is of course off topic anywhere and should be closed and deleted on spot, but worth getting Smokey involved. IMO.
I don't report all the MSE off topic questions, for example...

@ShadowWizard trolling, insulting users of the site.
That's worth a rude/abusive flag.

@Mithrandir no idea who they are. So it fits a custom flag perhaps, but you can't expect everyone to know "Eric Kaufman" is a user on that site.

Oh well. Still, this really belongs to that site, can't know the troll is targeting users. There's also no direct offense.

@Mithrandir so should we do another round of updated criteria? I agree that the ones we have are probably too strict for some categories, but do we want to relax everything, or just have specific criteria for specific categories?

@tripleee I'd go for a common sense based approach
there are cases where blacklisting at 2/2 definitely makes sense imo
Like move away from a hard limit and just go to "multiple TP hits with no or very few false positives" or even "Is unlikely to ever be used for anything other then spam on SE"

the definition of "bad" is very narrow (namecheap.com, some FPs but still roughly top-20 in accuracy) but I'd certainly like to try extending it at some point
domaincontrol seems next in the queue for me

remarkably, 4 FPs last Saturday; on average I think roughly 5 FPs per week
actually a bit more, 33 in 6 weeks
so 5.5 per week

^ 2/2 over 14 days ... are our blacklisting criteria too strict? not blacklisting this here and now feels pretty frustrating

there was a discussion yesterday too, lemme try and find it

rekt

Ah quartata to the snipe

I'd love to have a "use common sense" rule... but we tried that, and we have criteria because it didn't work

Didn't it though
Or did we just streamline it because people were having slightly differing opinions?

4:35 PM
No, we had endless debates about what was obvious spam
some things really are obvious
That domain that Byte mentioned is obvious, so's the domain that quartata mentioned

I almost lean towards having a ongoing discussion about what is and isn't obvious spam is a good thing
Keeps everybody sharper in their perception, I think

but once you allow those, people start blacklisting others below the threshold because they think them obvious, while other people don't
and then we have arguments, and someone makes an executive decision, and those aren't fun

Could we just rely on that everybody is mature enough to not throw a fit over a disagreement on a domain blacklisting?
I'm sure everyone here is mature enough for that

@ArtOfCode can you review my PR when you get a chance? github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/pull/1170

4:37 PM
ya we tried that...

I personally think there isn't anything wrong with the current criteria
waiting until 3/3 for an obvious spammer is not a huge deal
although it is more annoying for spammers that wait a few months in between, since our rules want more hits for that

3/3 is low... I was gonna say we could look at dropping it if it was something like 5/5, but 3/3 ain't much

Although I guess the original issue says 5/5 always:
> The site has at least five hits in Metasmoke, with no false positives, and at least one of them is below the default autoflagging threshold (currently, 280) and no older than six months.
but I think most of us do 3/3 for the really obvious stuff
like if it's over the course of a couple days
Honestly, if we moved blacklists out of a flat file and made something that did audits this would matter less
Useless domains would eventually weed themselves out, and we could use the watchlist for things we're not sure about as opposed to obvious spam domains

@SmokeDetector tpu-

I did build that into metasmoke...and then we removed it again because it never got used

4:45 PM
huh?
when was that?

most of a year ago, probably

huh
I was more thinking this would be something the fabled central blacklist tracker did

though we could do it easily now with SpamDomain

I flagged it as rude/abusive and so !!/reported it as rude/abusive.

Additionally, this was dealt with in TL. You are in there. There is no need to bring it here.

sd k
@Andy I'd personally like it in Metasmoke so I can use it as a test case for Perspective

Why not !!/report a rude/abusive post just because the moderators are already aware of it, if it's not deleted yet?
I'm unsure why a moderator knowing about it already is relevant to this.

8:48 PM
We don't provide any extra help when the mod is involved. All you did in this case was bring unneeded attention to a problem that was already being handled by a local mod.

Why not?

Because we don't have a wall of shame.

If that's the case, why would a mod bother !!/reporting in here before nuking... like we have done before?

Because there IS a difference between SPAM and rudeness
We do not detect rudeness. Smokey isn't designed for that.
The fact that it happens once and a while is a nice benefit

@Andy ...no? Then why do we have 'offensive answer detected' reasons and all that?

8:51 PM
We definitely want to detect R/A
Spam is more important in terms of designing reasons is all

You know what, I'm not in a position to argue about this right now. You want to report rudeness, fine. However, I am more upset that you took this out of TL where the local mod was dealing with this and brought it here. Charcoal users provided absolutely no benefit to dealing with the problem.

?
What's this about the TL?
Was there something senisitive in the post?
I didn't notice
Aside from the obvious

it was originally mentioned in the TL, where I saw it, so I went and flagged it as rude/abusive and then !!/reported it like I do for every other post I flag as spam or rude/abusive.
I'm guessing this comes down to a fundamental disagreement between Andy and I about whether Charcoal is there to provide on the spot help in deleting it or not. I'd say that yes, we are, but that's not our only purpose.
We have metasmoke and stuff to help further our detection for later cases.
And the more things we have in MS, the more we can work on our spam and rude/abusive detection.
Yes, Charcoal is the 'spam' spot. But we do also deal with rude/abusive stuff, and you can't deny that.
