@ArtOfCode Are you in the election chat still?

11:58 AM
aye

Are you seeing what I'm seeing and also holding back a retort?

Retorting would not be a good idea from me.
Diamonds are pointy and have sharp edges.
(and if you know where that's from I'd be surprised)

@ArtOfCode I vaguely recall thats a Undo quote
can't remember where or when, though

is surprised

Even I could pick that if I thought hard enough

12:02 PM
@ArtOfCode Civilized retort probably wouldn't cut anyone
But I see your point

Moderators tend to be better off not making retorts... or engaging in discussions this thorny at all really, but... special case.

Plenty of them do
But yeah
I know where you're coming from

Are you talking about the SO election chat or the american election chat (if there is one)?

I answered a comment asking about what would happen to my (quite blunt) comment style if I were elected
the latter
Essentially it boils down to you have to tread more carefully
I think, because people aspouse your opinion to be more then just that.

@Magisch hopefully he just learned his lesson. If not... there are other tools I can use.

Oh god
leaves room

@ArtOfCode What is that? Moving to other chatroom, chat kick, chat temp ban, mod message, deleting a post?
Did I miss any?

mod messages aren't a thing in chat, but otherwise any/all of the above

Mod messages can be used to deal with in-chat behavior though, right?
So if someone misbehaves on SO a SO mod can send them a mod msg?
Or do you need to tie them to a post like flags?

12:12 PM
Yeah, though in practice that doesn't tend to happen unless you really dun f--ked up
Tends to just be that you get kicked or whacked with half an hour's suspension

neither does a year long chatban, usually

maybe longer if the mods have had enough of your shit

I got a week from shog once
for something quite reasonably out of line

And he didn't like some remarks I made
Not a big deal though
I think that was sometime last november or december
@ArtOfCode Have you actually researched me before, though?
I mean aside from flagging spam and discussing smokey in here, we don't really interact much

The only time I've only come close to being spoken to by a mod was when I sorta misunderstood the point of accepted answers ("I will give the accept to the first person to combine these two answers even though the question has only been up for 5 mins"). That was on my first question which I think was a HNQ.

@Magisch I look up history for anyone I have any non-trivial interaction with
Knowledge is power
or whatever they say

Interesting

LOL, a spam message directed at mods.

can you invalidate?

How did 5 people flag that as spam?

Yvette looked up the linked app and said it was malware (didn't uninstall at all) and it seemed to be a pattern
So after a short discussion we flagged
Apparently that was a FP. One of the Android.SE mods commented & alerted me to it

Didn't it look like an ad for the other app mentioned: Device ID

12:40 PM
Yeah it did
I bungled that somewhat and misjudged some keywords
Already apologized to the Android.SE mod

Yeah, okay. That kind of thing is where we need to be really careful. There are more than enough of us in this room to unilaterally 6-flag nuke a post. As it is, we came very close to doing so (4 of 6 flags at least, possibly 5).

Indeed

If you need to have a full-on discussion about whether to flag it or not, it's safer for one or two people to flag it.

May be a good idea
Maybe three so it gets hidden until mod review

I wouldn't even go that far. If there's uncertainty, let the local community have a say as well
TL;DR: Be careful we're not unilaterally 6-flag nuking something we're not entirely sure about. If in doubt, ask a mod either here or locally.

@ArtOfCode so again, do we want to "(needs admin)" on that one to clear the incorrect marks?

you can do, but now that I know about it there's not much point
but yeah, in general

in the general case, is that the usual response? I'd like for the feedback to be clean because that also helps the machine learning etc, but if "(needs admin)" is likely to be ignored or only tolerated with a groan, I'm not going to push it

@tripleee nah, if we were going to ignore people using it, we wouldn't have built it :)

I'll go ahead then
I'll do the others I talked about earlier but not right now, maybe tomorrow, gtg

mkay :)

1:10 PM
Gah
I failed that on so many fronts

Don't worry @Mag, it's been dealt with. All we need to do is realise that it was a mistake and use that to... not do it again, which I'm sure you will.

@ArtOfCode I flagged it in good faith, it recommends a practice that is not safe for Android phone owners. I stand by that and said that to the mods, but also in good faith accept and respect their decisions. It's possible that the app may not be able to be removed and most users don't realise that. As the usual system protections of the phone are being broken before installing the app. A practice that most developers on SO cringe at. Very dangerous.
That's my opinion as an android developer. I would never follow that guidance or install that app
At the same time I do not wish to draw problems for the room. Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.

@YvetteColomb I'd agree with you if there was significant evidence for it, but I don't think one review of hundreds constitutes that

@ArtOfCode talking to mod here android.stackexchange.com/questions/149805/… if you see my reasoning, you'll understand. It really doesn't matter that much, as I say, many consumers will not even realise they can't get rid of it. People can be quite oblivious to what happens on their phones. I'm a bit strict about it

@YvetteColomb I do see your reasoning, and I totally get that ending up with an app you can't remove isn't a great situation. But... unless you've tried it yourself, or there's overwhelming agreement that that's the case... I don't think there's any certainty that it can't be removed. One review isn't something to rely on; as Dan said, it could just be a confused Android user who had their apps automatically restored after reset.

@ArtOfCode maybe. I don't agree with rooting the phones to begin with, but then if people don't worry, I guess I shouldn't worry. I wouldn't want to be using internet banking or email etc on the device. I rooted one phone, once, and never used that phone for any personal purpose after that.
anyway must go to bed. Late here. Sorry to cause a problem. Night guys \o :)
