in Room for JakeGould and Shog9 on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 18 hours ago, by Shog9
@JakeGould I've spent many years now thinking about that. These rules, guidelines, these moderators... They're all stand-ins for something else, meant to remind us of what we're here for, the shared goals that brought us together.
in Room for JakeGould and Shog9 on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 18 hours ago, by Shog9
But all too often, we forget that anyway. Forget to treat each other with respect, forget to listen as much as we talk, forget that there's something more to this than the game.
in Room for JakeGould and Shog9 on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 18 hours ago, by Shog9
So we write these rules, hammer out these guidelines, hope to find a few people willing to step in and be moderate when no one wants to be, and hope that with enough time we remember.
in Room for JakeGould and Shog9 on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 18 hours ago, by Shog9
Sometimes we all just need to walk away for a while, until we can remember why this ever seemed worthwhile.
Didn't want all this wisdom to be lost with room's eventual freezing/deletion.

@Normal Reminds me of some earlier Shog wisdom...
in The Comms Room, Apr 15 '15 at 4:12, by Shog9
I walked away for ~6 months. Did some other things. Had fun. And it was fun again when I came back.
in The Comms Room, Apr 15 '15 at 4:12, by Shog9
But if it hadn't been, I wouldn't be here now. And that'd be ok too.
in The Comms Room, Apr 15 '15 at 4:13, by Shog9
Life's too short, too fully of unavoidable misery, to waste on misery that can be avoided.

12:26 AM
After the recent evaluation by Jon Ericson, Mechanics Meta became suddenly obsessed with statistics... "Congrats to Handy Howie & Anarach for reaching the 3k point milestone!", "Congrats to Brian Knoblauch for reaching 9k points!", "Congrats to Max Goodridge for reaching 1000 points!", "Wish Robert S. Barnes congratulations for reaching 2k points!", "Congrats to DucatiKiller for reaching 7000 points!"
Math Meta had a thing about creating congratulatory posts for everyone with 100K/200K/300K rep, but eventually (after a tense debate) this was mostly dropped.

@Normal we do that in chat.PPCG but only for *0k usually

Yes, and in chat it's much more tolerable.

right. That would get very annoying very fast if there were a new meta question every time

Math also has a dedicated chatroom for congratulations of any kind.

@hichris123 The wisdom of Shog is amazing sometimes.. He's a good writer too :)
@hichris123 but I have to disagree, that wouldn't be ok :(

12:52 AM

@Seth I think he meant ok for his overall health. But yeah, Stack Exchange would've never gained a valuable employee.

@hichris123 yes I know he did, I was twisting it a bit :p

:)
@Normal So up up up up up down down (weekday-weekend) ;P

Besides weekly oscillation, there is a slight overall increase, post-holidays.

1:18 AM
@Undo If I were to hypothetically want to set up a dev instance of metasmoke, how would I do that?

@hichris123 Still using Windows?
First, get a five gallon bucket in which to put your tears.

3D printing is in private beta.

Second, look up how to install Ruby, you want ~2.2.
Then you want to install Bundler
Clone the repo, bundle install it

That's it?

@hichris123 Then you have to tell it where the database is, but that's if you get that far

1:22 AM
Sounds easy. :P

The worst projects do
The main issue is that Ruby was never really meant to be a Windows thing, nor were most of the gems.

2:11 AM
Maybe just NAA? I'm not sure.

2:32 AM
@Undo success. :)

Interesting follow-up to the blog post: Is Stack Exchange the only major network where moderators are democratically elected? by Franck Dernoncourt on skeptics.stackexchange.com
2015 was the first time (that I remember) that two active elected mods on pretty large sites were removed by Community Team. (HopelessN00b at SF; Richard at Sci-Fi)
There must be something about the letters S and F that makes sites weird as hell.

So... should we just drop "porn" as a keyword on Anime?

I'm thinking so

There is some crap there, but porn is on topic, so let's drop it.
And also Movies, perhaps?

Maybe

Or just eliminate the keyword entirely...
The true positives I see there also match other reasons: repeating chars, offensive, website, etc
Maybe a compromise: require short post with that keyword.
> ask god or go on porn hub or run down ur street naked
To catch stuff like this.

8:22 PM
After reading through all this stuff, I vote we just kill the keyword. The really bad stuff in there is caught by other means, and the flow of false reports is steady. It's just not a good signal for anything.
