A problem is, I think this is where that spam is most active, because of the audience.
But I see we haven't had much success with it recently. Maybe it needs to be tighter.

Maybe, but I anecdotally recall many fp's and no true hits there.

Yes, I think this kind of spam would now be detected by the presence of email (which it does contain).

Maybe passport with no link or phone # is okay on that site?

Maybe we can drop this one (title based) entirely.

drop the UK passport one.
That's the only thing that gives fps... (and it's my fault, I added 'uk' to the filter months ago)

12:03 AM
(fake|original|novelty|quality).{0,5}(passports?|driver'?s? licen[cs]e|ID cards?)
^ removed uk as the first option, but added .{0,5} to allow for "fake uk passport", etc

Looks promising.

Interesting, @S.L.Barth got Fanatic badge on Math.SE without ever posting...
(I was looking at Fanatic badges because of this bug report: one lucky user got three of them.)
There are 40 fanatics without posts on Math. The oldest, and most reputable, is RegDwight of ELU fame.
That's a pretty high number. SO has only 126; compare the site size...

hmm, so why'd you miss it?
Must have just slipped through I guess.

Probably in the api queue
How long did it sit on the site?

~1 minute.

Yeah, most likely there wasn't another active question to fill the queue.

hm, ok. How does this queue work?

Posts get added to the queue, once there are two posts in the AU queue, it waits 60 seconds then makes an API request.

4:05 AM
Was it 60 or 30?
60.

60. That time should probably be played around with.

What if we tried less delay?

And/or beg someone to make the API refresh more rapidly.
@NormalHuman we could, but the idea was to make sure the post was in the API data.

I think it's be more realistic to ask for higher quota, e.g., 25000 req for Smokey.

fair idea. not sure who we'd beg, but...

4:08 AM
Kevin Montrose. Incidentally, I just read something in the API docs...
> Some examples of write abuse that will be punished:

> "Auto-commenting" based on post heuristics.
> Automating flagging or closing based on dumb heuristics.
Um... I've been auto-commenting on Math for about two months now.

Smokey seems to be fairly not-dumb.

For auto-flagging, it's only "dumb" heuristics that's prohibited, for comments it apparently doesn't matter.
Oh well. If they ban me from Math, f the site and its API.

lol
You can always just put together a case for why what you're doing is sane and present it to someone who looks like they're in a good mood

> All content created via the API will have links pointing back to an app's Stack Apps post, to aid in giving an app's author feedback and in reporting abusive content.
Is this so?

That stopped happening when the apps came out
IIRC

4:15 AM
Or just write to team@ asking to bump up the quota for the particular API key...
I mean, Smokey had just 900 left today.

Usually we're over 1k.
But yeah, it might be worth asking for more
@NormalHuman Where was the text saying we can ask for more?

@Undo Don't remember, but here's a post by Kevin Montrose saying a user can make as many as 50K requests.

@NormalHuman That's with authentication, then you get 10k per app, up to 5 apps.

Oh, Smokey isn't using auth...

That's something we could do - just alternate between two keys

4:22 AM
But that's not too difficult to arrange, right? Just getting a token.

Although I'd rather just get a bigger quota than do something hackish

Yes. And then two distinct keys could be used for two purposes; e.g., one for SO, one for the rest.
A hybrid approach: write to team@ and ask whether Smokey using 20K requests via two API keys is okay with them.
Then they don't need to actually do anything in order to allow more requests.

I might just ping someone in TL and ask

Heh, and then we have Shog9 explicitly approving automatic votes and comments.

@NormalHuman Wow, I hadn't seen that.
Kinda stunned that he linked to us.
I somewhat doubt SE would have issues doubling Smokey's quota on a load basis.
It seems to have proven itself decently well

...wow.....
Quite a few people from the Tavern there. The Drupal.SE mods should be quite grateful for Smokey.
Although I still don't understand.... why is Drupal.SE so popular with spammers?
Academia.SE and AskUbuntu.SE I understand. Their URL's are early in the alphabet, and we often see the work in alphabetic order.

@S.L.Barth Nobody knows. This is periodically asked on meta.Drupal (where [spam] is one of the most popular tags), and questions get closed as opinion-based.
Here's a funny one:
2
Q: Why is my SPAM served so slow?

MołotI mean, often there is a "1 question with new activity" button. I click it immediately when it appears for me, and whoa, question is already deleted. It's pretty irritating - if post gets deleted before info is shown on my screen, server should stop that info, right? Posting here and not on meta...

I think we know why that happens. :)
Reading the spam tag I see they had this problem since 2011, when the site launched.

es.so is in the HNQ. Aren't foreign language SO sites supposed to be excluded?

I believe so.

I believe foreign language questions are meant to be excluded, per this post.
Exclusion by the content, not by site.
A recent reference is the confused post history here.
I gather from it that lang-SO are an exception in a different sense: HNQ do not appear in the sidebar there.
Three sites are penalized: SO, TWP, Programmers; but they can still be in HNQ.
And apparently, there is no outright exclusion for any site.

hmm

I'm not gonna say that months of going back and forth on this, drawing up plans only to scrap them and start over, nagging lazy co-workers for feedback and trying to parse legal objections have driven Sam & Tim completely mad... I have entirely too much respect for them to say that. But they could probably both use a gallon or two of strong drink at this point. — Shog9 ♦ 1 hour ago
So, how about they get that & the plan is scrapped again..
@SmokeDetector f and I think civicrm has to be excluded from this.
Like Salesforce, it's a thing about managing contact information such as emails, among other.

What about lang-SO sites? The whole license discussion is on Meta in English.
