@Undo So it looks like to me you run a RDS with MySQL & have it auto backup to S3? Am I right? Seems pretty simple.
Undo
@hichris123 That's not what
I
am doing right now, but it's probably what I
should
be :P
Right now I have MySQL installed on the Ubuntu server in EC2.
hichris123
What's the difference?
Undo
@hichris123 So RDS has its own 'instances'. EC2 has its own 'instances'. Right now I have only an EC2 instance with Apache and MySQL and PHP on it.
If I were to do it
right
, then I would have an EC2 instance with only Apache and PHP on it, and have an RDS instance with MySQL on it.
hichris123
Ah, that makes more sense. :P
You're easier to understand than any of thses AWS help thingys.
Undo
Probably :P

Hehe
Oh, I figured out a non-cronjob related thingy to do to Charcoal
hichris123
Hmm?
Undo
We can make a thing to load in more comments without reloading the whole page
hichris123
@Undo Is there any difference in terms of performance or anything?
Undo
@hichris123 Not sure.
hichris123
20:38
@Undo YES!
Undo
I think RDS instances are EC2 instances without all the OS stuff, just pure MySQL optimizations.
hichris123
Huh. Interesting.
It's like learning a whole new language with AWS. :P
Undo
It is.
But it's totally worth it.
(also, Google has its own compute engine. It's not as mature, though, and it's
usually more expensive
)
hichris123
@Undo Me saw it, but it doesn't look like there's an easy way to do the MySQL and other stuff on it.
Undo
@hichris123 Well, if they just hand you a blank VPS (like EC2 does), then you can do just about anything with it.
Wait, I found a thing!
cloud.google.com/products/cloud-sql
hichris123
20:41
You have to pay, though. :(
Undo
True
hichris123
Me likes free tiers.
Undo
Me does too.
They get you dependent on it, then they rip the freeness away from you :P
hichris123
Yep.
I'm going to have to find that AWS $100 thingy.
Undo
I hope you do.
it's nice being able to play with stuff and know it won't come back to bite you in the wallet.
hichris123
20:44
Yeah, as a kid without a job life's very different than for most AWS customers. :P
Undo
Hehe, yeah
Hey, maybe we can get SE to host Charcoal!
hichris123
Hmm.... there's a certain SE employee in here right now.
Undo
Although they would probably rewrite it in a language we can't understand ;(
hichris123
Like some MS language.
Undo
shudders
So maybe we should... hmm...
I know! We could accept 'donations' from moderators of sites. If they donate a bunch of money, they won't get as many flags!
hichris123
20:48
Heh.
Undo
(hint: this is probably a bad idea)
hichris123
That's good. :P
And then we just spam them with flags anyway.
Undo
No, that would be wrong.
hichris123
Seriously?
ebay.com/itm/…
Undo
Heh, that's exactly what I got.
hichris123
20:50
It didn't onebox... :(
We didn't have a giant Amazon onebox.
Undo
What they don't know is that it will probably only be valid for a few more months.
@hichris123 Yay for no giant oneboxes!
hichris123
Probably true.
Undo
Ok, we must figure out how to make the AJAX-reloader gizmo.
hichris123
Your turn to do it. I don't know anything about AJAX.
Though I could probably learn...
Undo
It's just a GET request in the jQuery
@hichris123 Kinda like
this line
Just a .ajax();
hichris123
20:54
How I'd learn it is just by copying and pasting code to do stuff.
So would we load it when the page is empty, or when 1 is handled?
Undo
@hichris123 I would say that we load it when the page is empty.
Because otherwise we have to deal with knowing what flags are currently already on the screen
hichris123
Okay. So how do we detect that?
Undo
@hichris123 We can always show the button, and when it's pushed let's just remove all the flags from the page and reload them.
Oooh @hichris123 maybe free AWS money somewhere in here:
aws.amazon.com/activate/…
> $1,000 to $15,000 AWS Promotional Credit
Good lord, that would go forever!
hichris123
That's for startups in some accelerators/places, though.
> For startups in select accelerators or funds
Undo
We must figure out how to make me an accelerator, incubator, or seed fund so that you can be associated with me.
hichris123
20:57
Heh. :P
Undo
Ok, I'm going to try to add the ajax gizmo
hichris123
Okay. Have fun. :P
> Educators, academic researchers, and students at accredited universities can apply for AWS service credits by visiting
aws.amazon.com/education
Ug, I'm not at a university @Undo.

?

I probably could :P
The part about being accredited might be hard, though

Undo
@hichris123 NOOOOOOO!!!
hichris123

We must give him some flags to handle
hichris123
I'm out. :(
I already did mine.
hichris123
21:23
@Undo Looks almost done to me?
Undo
@hichris123 Not even close. I can't get the jQuery action hooked up ;(
hichris123
Oh. Okay.
So you mean when you click it it doesn't fire the jQuery action @Undo?
Undo
@hichris123 yes - can you see any reason why?
hichris123
No...
