SLOUCHING TOWARD PROCEDURALISM “Here we come across another, very positive feature of play : it creates order, is order. Into an imperfect world and into the confusion of life it brings a temporary, a limited perfection. Play demands order absolute and supreme. The least deviation from it "spoils the game", robs it of its character and makes it worthless.” - Homo Ludens Homo Luden

I've created an Archive of all the free adventures I've written since 2012 here: FREE ADVENTURE PDF ARCHIVE I also wrote a paragraph about each the adventures included to place them within my own design evolution and perhaps a larger story of OSR design from 2012 - 2020. A DUNGEON DESIGN CHALLENGE FOR THE NEW YEAR Sean McCoy of Mothership fame recently proposed a community challenge, event or project he calls Dungeon23. My friend Ben L. over at Mazirian’s Garden has a bit more to say about it.   The basic idea is to challenge yourself to write a dungeon room key each day and dungeon level a month in 2023. Come January 1, 2024 you will have a 350

DESIGNING   FOR  DUNGEON 23 With my decision to work on Dungeon23 coincides my starting a public Crystal Frontier Campaign and being dissatisfied with the progress I've been making to various new projects. I've got three large, rather experimental dungeons about 1/4 - 1/2 finished (including art and layout), and a smaller one of about 20 rooms 2/3 done, but they've just refused t

Character Generation and House Rules for My Home Game I'm going to be running a Crystal Frontier game online, the first semi-public game I've run since the end of G+.  In preparation rather then introduce my house rules piecemeal I've prepared a character generation and basic rules document for the game. It includes the major subsystems for my house ruled version of Original Dungeons

Q: Multiattack defense vs legendary actions

Somewhere_Nthemiddle I have a question about DnD 5E Ranger Hunter Multiattack Defense feature. Should you or do you get Multiattack Defense against legendary actions? For example, when you get a bite and two claw attacks from a dragon you obviously get Multiattack Defense if one of those hits and when the dragon ends...

"A Taxonomy of Roleplaying Utterances v0.1" by Michael Prescott on Trilemma Adventures. There are lots of ways that gamers characterize play styles, many of which focus on the intentions of the play group. I won't recap those here—this post is about a different lens for looking at play style, namely, what are people talking about?

"Further RPG Transcript Analysis: Old School" by Michael Prescott on Trilemma Adventures. Recently, I wrote about a taxonomy for classifying the statements made while playing a role-playing game. I've been looking at an 'old school' style transcript that I was given by Ara Winter.
"RPG Transcript Analysis: Critical Role" by Michael Prescott on Trilemma Adventures. For the third post in my 'transcript analysis' series, I'm looking at a very different play style than I'm familiar with: Critical Role.

Q: Does a legendary action occur “outside” of a turn?

Dale MThis answer assumes that legendary actions happen outside of all turns. That is, between one turn and the next. A legendary creature can take a certain number of special actions — called legendary actions — outside its turn. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the ...

A: Please change the wording of the comment generated when mods move comment threads to chat

CatijaUPDATE: This is now live: In general, we like the idea of changing the text to be a bit more informative. There's a lot of good ideas between the question and Tinkeringbell's answer. I poked at it a bit to try and find something that met the key points in the question while also being informati...

Q: Workshoping "What is the best way to bring a campaign to an end?"

ArgoI've recently posted a question on the role-playing games stack exchange ang had it removed because it ended up seeming too broad or just phrased weird. What could I do to improve it and allow it to actually be a question that can be answered? I want to narrow down the question so it's less opini...
