@Carcer from a child of the 90s, I thought you were talking about Yu-Gi-Oh then. Lol
@Carcer rpg chat in a nutshell

@BESW I lovs this as a concept.

Q: Does the Pole of Angling's command word require an action?

Gael LMany magic items require an action (or bonus action) to be properly activated (or deactivated). But there is a common magic item in Xanathar's Guide to Everything (p. 138) that doesn't seem to require an action to (de)activate: the Pole of Angling. While holding this 10-foot pole, you can sp...

@Ash I know, right. Dramatic reversals of failure counting down to dramatic losses counting down to MAJOR LOSS.

Am I understanding right that you get to choose which die goes to which thing?

user15026
Because that makes it extra interesting.

Yes!
At the beginning of the game you choose which of the map/light/secrets gets the d10/d8/d6.

user15026
oooh, those are some tricky delicious choices

You also define them more clearly: is the light a flashlight, a cell phone screen, an ancient lantern?
Is the map a well-annotated foldout map, a GPS app, an ancient scroll?
And if you lose them, the fallout is up to you but the prompts are delicious.
> But if you lose all these secrets? Oh child. Perhaps all the power of your family, cultivated over many years and through many secrets, will come undone. All of it laid to bear, you will become disconnected from family.

That seems a little harsh
@Carcer you have also inflicted it upon me now, if that helps
Unfortunately I've also added a backwards baseball cap out of nowhere and now she appears to have a real microphone
And a stage

@trogdor I mean, it's a creepifying game about venturing into a magical forest that was destroyed by a city, to supplicate the powerful beings at its heart.

Still pretty harsh man

@Someone_Evil sounds like a good question for meta

And you get at least two uses of your secrets before you lose them, if you assign the lowest die and fail each time.

Hmm it seems like things could be over pretty fast like that

user15026
@BESW shudders I love it and hate it at the same time if that makes sense

11:38 PM
@trogdor Your "I failed but will continue" resources are a map, secrets, and a light. They get assigned different die sizes and the smallest die size gives you a minimum of two uses before that resource is lost.

Oooh
Ok

So there's a minimum of nine "recovery" moments available to you, even if you fail all of the rolls for them.

Fair enough

But when you lose a resource for good, you also roll 1d6 and subtract that value from your resilience (which started play as 2d6+5). If your resilience zeroes out, you stop progressing and the Forest lets you go... but roll on a table to see how you've changed.
That is where the game can suddenly end.

Ouch

11:43 PM
There's a couple of other possible endings too.
You can gain resilience as you play, for one thing.
Even if you lose all your resilience there's a possibility you get a second chance.
And also the Brothers Six are hunting you down and as you play you may fill in the track that represents their progress; if they find you, the games ends based on how they deal with you--but again, there's a chance for continuation.

It's sounding pretty complicated now

It's a 25-page document, but it's designed with the assumption that the reader has never played an RPG before.

user15026
@BESW oh, I like that

@BESW ah
