@Shalvenay I'll be available at about 8:30 my time, pls let Trog know.

@KorvinStarmast I saw your ping

1:05 AM
@Shalvenay Yeah, I'm dreaming small for now. I'm still an unknown GM quantity, after all. I would still like a star on that, though? :)

@Glazius starred -- you'll have to poke someone with a diamond or owner rights for the pin though

Q: Chaining Dissonant Whispers via War Caster feat

AmonDissonant Whispers states: The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 3d6 psychic damage and must immediately use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from you. The War Caster Feat states: When a hostile creature’s movement pro...

Two fox paws way up.

lol

I know some folks on Discord who I might want to invite to one of your GSS games sometime :) we'll see if things work out so that I can pull it off, though

I did say I probably had other plans

Q: What happens if you Dissonant Whispers a Hydra?

the dark wandererA Hydra gets extra reactions which "can be used only for Opportunity Attacks". Dissonant Whispers forces a creature to consume its reaction to do stuff one cannot ordinarily do with a reaction. Can Dissonant Whispers spam force a hydra to consume its reactions running away, or will the creatu...

this older question recently popped up on the front page due to an edit:

Q: Creating the personality of a character different from myself

noncomI am a newbie in playing role-playing games, and after several games, I've come to the conclusion that character personality creation poses a bit of a problem for me. I mostly tend to create and describe somebody with whom I feel rather comfortable. This makes for the personality, the alignment,...

the end of the question seems a little unfocused and survey-like, though I think there's a stackable question in there:
> Hence my question - is that normal among roleplayers? Do you create your characters to be like you (with some possible modifications, like, maybe, gender, race, some minor biases), or do you usually create a completely different person and inhabit it? If the latter is the case, then how do I do that, and how do I get into playing that role?
it reads more like a discussion prompt as is

8:57 AM
@Shalvenay oh and I thought I had replied to this earlier, but yeah that would be cool

@V2Blast One of the first people I talked with when I started RPGs, told me that the best bit of character-making advice he'd ever gotten from a GM was to make a character that was very much like himself.
Since then I've met all kinds of people with all kinds of character-making philosophies. One of my friends likes making characters who let her explore a particular thing about herself, but at a distance by having everything else about the character be unlike her.
Several people I know say that RPGs are escapism and the point is to be people completely unlike you.
"Is this normal for roleplayers" is a bad question no matter what "this" is. Not just for the Stack, it's unanswerable in any meaningful way.

I kinda like making characters that are like me but that take characteristics of myself and blow them out of proportion
but then I also kinda like characters that just aren't like me at all too

9:45 AM
I guess technically I don't usually think about it in that way
just "oh I thought of this character idea and I want to do that now"

Q: Is it possible to create armor from monster skin with that monster’s resistances?

OharDoes armour made from a monster with resistance keep the resistance? For example, a PC kills some Gricks and makes their skin into leather with his Leatherworker's kit. The Grick's statblock says it has Damage Resistance: Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing From Nonmagical Attacks Is it...

I've noted that I don't really make characters that would ever do anything I personally find particularly morally objectionable, but they vary a lot in personality.

Yeah, and of course even within individuals there's significant variation depending on system, story, the people you're playing with, your mood at the time...

10:43 AM
Hello from Sydney!

[wave]

What game that I haven't played might I want to play with science fiction nerds who like languages, Studio Ghibli, mathematical models of social developments both real and imaginary (Asimov's Foundation) and who I will meet in a not very quiet board game cafe?
So far, my ideas are Shock:, Microscope, and Golden Sky Stories.

Pilgrims of the Flying Temple, maybe, especially with one of the more complex social letters.
Is Dialect available yet?
[rummages]

Good! Those two I had thought about, but not committed yet.
Pilgrims I have played but it would be useful to try again, the game I played was … about as childish as it could get with adults playing. Dialect I haven't played, but it was an intermediate spark that led to the formation of this group.

11:23 AM
so, someone on another community I'm in came up with a 5e thing (sorc bloodline) and wants balance feedback on it:

@Anaphory I mean, GSS can be a little Studio Ghibli,... a little, depending on which one you mean,.... but it's not really much of any of the others I think

@trogdor Sure! But it's a game I want to try, and if these people think to like it, I'm up for it!

> ELEPHANTAL ATTUNEMENT. You can speak with elephants, and the elephants will answer. This doesn't give you power over elephants, but you can take friendly language-based actions with elephants using skills like Rapport, and Contacts, and you get +2 to do so.
ELEPHANTAL COMMAND. You can use antagonistic language-based actions with elephants as well using skills like Provoke and Intimidate, and you get +2 to do so.
ELEPHANTAL SHIELD. When you defend against a physical attack, each elephant in the same zone provides you a +1 helping bonus and also suffers the effects of the attack if it still

@Anaphory it is really good

Exactly.

11:34 AM
I like it a lot

@BESW lulz

I just don't want you going in,... assuming you will get something out of it that it doesn't necessarily provide

@trogdor How would you describe GSS in very few words?

@Anaphory yeah, that's something I've kinda struggled with as well

Cute magic animals who transform into children and help people?
that few enough words?
XD

11:37 AM
"In Golden Sky Stories, we play magical creatures in a rural Japanese village, who turn into children and use their powers to make friends and help their neighbours. We award each other friendship points in recognition of being helpful or adorable, and our friendships power our abilities."

Do others agree that this question should be split up?

3:49 PM
@V2Blast That's expensive. 8^o Hope you all had a great time.
@Shalvenay You have to pay an action to switch elemental type. (Shades of Lore Wizard UA) ... so there is a cost in terms of action economy. I like that.
@Shalvenay For the 14th level ability, "when you see an enemy mage" should read "when you see an enemy spell caster" to fit with how 5e does this stuff.
The elemental shield. Uh, fiddly as all get out. And a pretty cheap counterspell, though its effectiveness will vary with the stat block of the opposition.
I think it should cost more than one sorc point.
@Shalvenay Looks like Druids wild shape. Love the level 18 ability, and it eats sorc points.(So three times per long rest? )
Pretty nice effort.
I think your friend ought to post it a GiTP Homebrew forum and get some feedback. Those folks do a pretty decent scrub. Certainlyk helped my attempt at circle of the flame druid.

4:10 PM
(Korvin, in case you wonder, that reminder comment was in no way aimed at you)

4:38 PM
@Someone_Evil No worries, and if it had been I'd have needed to take note and revise the answer, right? Teamwork for the win! :)
@Anaphory Here's my "few words" take: "GSS is game where you play a magical animal / spirit who helps people, forms connections with the other magical animals and people, and is limited only by your sense of wonder and imagination. It is heartwarming and joyful in tone."

5:07 PM
@KorvinStarmast wasn't too expensive. it was fun despite us having to go to a different place due to the power outages

@V2Blast ouch. We had power outages this past weekend, and my wife's friend's party had to move from one house to another due to that inconvenient truth. Arrgh. Almost had our place chosen, but me still being a little ill avoided a mad scramble to clean house.

Q: Does entangle require vegetation?

OpifexI'm a first time DM for first-time players. I was very afraid of them all dying really early on because I read that the encounters can be very hard, there are only 4 players instead of the usual 5, and they all have very low HPs (7, 8, 10 and 15). Goblins have one-shotted some PCs on the very fir...

@NautArch Thanks for engaging with that question, it encouraged a better version of it. two thumbs up

the mind boggles a little at how someone could have been playing D&D for 3 years and not understand hit point gain at level up

Well, sure, if you've learned through example and osmosis. They've been a GM, they've never had to learn it if their players were leveling up on their own.

9:45 PM
@Carcer I think you found the Q&A I was vaguely remembering. Thanks.

@KorvinStarmast no worries. (It was the first question in the related links)

@Carcer So I only needed to look at the right hand margin? Wait, that's too easy! 8^o

I see you stack on hard mode

@Carcer Sometimes, I forget that we have some great tools.

I am well known to be a huge tool

9:50 PM
@Carcer snort almost lost the cocktail gulp I just took. Gin and tonic in the nose feels weird. 8^D

Ben
10:32 PM
@Carcer Quick lore/fluff/tech question for smarter types than me! I'm not super familiar with the details of long distance Imperial communications. I know astropaths are a big part of anything long range but at what point are more conventional means useless? As an example what would be the means and time needed for two Imperial ships at opposite ends of our own Solar system to communicate?

Appreciate any insight!

Metric communications are easier to calculate, but don't quite work for everyday contexts as smoothly.

Ben
I was going to say "good morning" first, but I got an email from the guy doing the Astartes miniseries (I'm a patreon supporter), and I got excited haha

Metric communications sounds like a horrible nightmare
like being crushed under the weight of people talking

Ben
@trogdor Lol. Radio is metric. You can calculate distance etc from intercepting the communication. Not necessarily location, but signal strength and things like that from the radiowaves

@Ben I realize it means something else XD

Ben
10:40 PM
@trogdor but yes... "metric tonne" is a common phrase, so I can see the association lol

yeah exactly

Ben
Have you seen the "kilogram of feathers vs kilogram of steel" video?

Q: Is this a Lost Mine of Phandelver Plot Hole?

Keven MI'm DM'ing for the first time with a group playing for the first time (Table of Noob's :p). In the 1st chapter of Lost Mine of Phandelver, the characters come across dead horses, are attacked by goblins, and discover a path into the woods. The campaign book says they "can easily steer the wagon ...

@Ben I mean, this happens in my brain every time someone brings up one of those theoretical "heavy thing vs light thing" weight puzzle,.. joke things
so yes
XD
it is funny
but I hadn't seen it till just now

Ben
10:46 PM
@V2Blast belated, but I only just remembered where it was from. It's my birthday

@Ben I think the standard limitation of the speed of light applies to any non-astropath communication

Ben
@Carcer Yeah, like Vox is effectively still radio.

but I'm pretty sure that the shorter the distance is (and probably the closer to Terra), the more reliable astropath comms (and warp travel) are

Ben
@Carcer Ahh interesting. Also fair... @Miniman and I were talking about the Mechanicus being Heretics (lol). And we got onto the subject of Psykers. He mentioned that Psykers have a connection to the Emperor, sort of like he's the killswitch to the Psyker connection to the warp?

sanctioned psykers are ritually dedicated to the emperor as a kind of binding which makes them less likely to have horrible warp stuff happen
which beats being one of the psykers that are ritually sacrificed to the emperor to keep the astronomicon ticking over

Ben
10:59 PM
That is a fair point XD

anyway, sanctioning makes their psychic abilities safer to use, but only so much so
the admech are in an interesting position to be sure

Ben
We had a Psyker in our Dark Heresy game, and she kept EMPing the Techpriest (warp surge effect). We told to get a psychic hood!!
Lol

I had a psyker in a DH oneshot dramatically murder a genestealer by luckily popping the perils of the warp that disintegrates all your equipment and blasts everything near you

Ben
11:20 PM
I think the worst one I heard of was a group of psykers only (that was the first mistake). One triggered warp surge, which caused everyone else to trigger. One did the same thing, making everyone trigger again, and then the third time it happened, one turned into a Demon Prince.
This was the second session. Lol

Wait, you can just turn into a demon prince?
No wonder everyone hates psykers

@trogdor All you have to do is marry a demon princess

@Someone_Evil lulz

@Someone_Evil XD

Ben
@trogdor You gotta roll a 99 on a percentile, then a 99 again.
@Someone_Evil or that. XD

11:28 PM
@Ben I'm disappointed that isn't 66 both times...

Ben
Wait, no I think that's when you just pop. You roll 2 100s, then you turn into a demon prince.
@Someone_Evil Well this is chaos, so 88 would make more sense :P

@Ben fair enough, but still a terrifying possibility

Ben
@trogdor It's never fun to roll on the surge table. Haha

I imagine not yeah
Really what's not fun is being a person in Warhammer
Of any variety I think really
But at least in 40k

Ben
Well, if you lose an appendage or an eye or something, that means you get cybernetics.
For a Techpriest that's like going candy shopping

11:38 PM
Yes, your traumatic battle with Tyranids, Chaos Marines, or straight up Warp Demons, but at least you get a nice robo arm
XD

Ben
Mine's got an integrated las rifle in it :D

XD
