1:02 PM
Hi :D

user362639
went to eat breakfast

user362639
1:22 PM
hello?

Hm, StackExchange wants to fade out OpenID log-in, but the login page that I'm linked to when not logged in for chat lists only OpenID login options. Strange choice.
@Mustachachu What did you have for breakfast?
(I, on the other hand should think about dinner.)

user362639
@Anaphory I ate captain crunch

user362639
what are you planning for dinner

It's very warm and I have fresh salad growing in the garden, so I'll probably eat a huge bowl of salad as main component, with some bread and cheese on the side which I still need to decide.

user362639
that sounds wonderful!

user362639
1:32 PM
welcome back @Ash

user362639
hey @NautArch

1:57 PM
@Mustachachu howdy howdy

user362639
yeet

quickly checks he didn't click on the Anime chat room by mistake ^_^'

user362639
there is a game called the 7th sea

user362639
it was recommended by mike

user362639
he says its about swashbuckling and magic which I can roll with

2:01 PM
I think @kviiri is running a 7th sea game?

@NautArch Indeed

to be fair, there are two games under that name.

user362639
I am going to check it out seems like fun

First session the day after tomorrow

2:02 PM
they also adapted it in a CCG

@Derpy I'm under the impression that the first edition also differs quite wildly from the second. Maybe.

probable.

The first edition, I know little of, except it has a weird[er] map and a very splatbook oriented design which I dislike.

user362639
oh its more of a card game then

@Mustachachu No, the card game is based on the RPG

user362639
2:03 PM
Or some hideous hybrid

user362639
OHHHH

user362639
yah going to stay with the rpg

@Mustachachu You'll probably want to get the book, but an abridged version of the rules is available for free download here.

user362639
k

There's three files: one is about the setting (a theme park version of European history, full of references to actual events and people), one is about creating characters and one is the actual rules.

user362639
2:06 PM
thanks @kviiri

@Mustachachu No prob!

user362639
Im guessing instead of being mostly on land you have a ship and fight sea monsters

Ships are an important part of the game, but it's not about fighting monsters as much as DnD is, land or sea.

user362639
more about the journey

user362639
?

user362639
2:12 PM
and conflict between the characters

It's a bit tricky to describe, but the system seems to be most geared at emulating romanticized heroes like Zorro or the Three Musketeers who triumph against ruthless villains despite consistently taking the moral high road.

user362639
so story and character gotcha

Monsters are present, though, but I can't imagine the game working well with them as the main source of conflict.
Yeah.
In 7th Sea 2e, the players write stories for their characters for the GM to play out. It's interesting

@kviiri Actually, why is it called 7th Sea?

user362639
what is the newest edition

2:15 PM
this reminds me of a dream I once had. A swashbuckling / pirate exploration themed mmorpg that had a whole secret, underground world about as large as the original one. Entering it was super hard, since you basically had to abuse randoms event that happened around the world. And then the few players who discovered it made a vow to not release any info about the existence of that areas. Nor did the devs.
As a results, metropolitan legends started to circulate about "weird ships that couldn't be bough in any store"

@Anaphory In the lore, there's six important trade seas, and the "Seventh Sea" is a mythical place where lost ships wind up or something. And then pop up somewhere way off course. No idea why they chose to name it that, though :)
@Mustachachu Second
@Anaphory And with the setting having some precursor magitech elements, it's probably intended to be a sort of a plot hook for the players to investigate.

@kviiri Wait... what?

user362639
is it a newer game

I already heard of that precise idea somewhere... Let me check
Zak Storm (also known as Zak Storm: Super Pirate) is a computer-animated children's television series produced by Zagtoon, Method Animation, De Agostini Editore, SAMG Animation, MNC Animation, and Man of Action. It debuted on Canal J in France on 2 December 2016. It debuted in the United States on KidsClick from 30 September 2017 to 7 January 2018, followed by Discovery Family on 14 October 2017. A second season is planned to be released in 2018. == Premise == When teenager Zak Storm takes his father's necklace and goes surfing, he is suddenly sucked by a giant wave and ends up in the Ber...
yep.... seem oddly similar to the premises of this one ^
this may explain where the team behind that show took the idea for it

I wouldn't be surprised if it was based on an existing nautical superstition

2:19 PM
possible

user362639
reading the character creation, seems to me less of your race determines your alignment and that you can make a more detailed background detailed about your background

@Mustachachu you should note that alignment as you know it is a thing pretty much only in DnD, and even there it's mostly a historical relic that has lost a lot of its significance.

user362639
I just watched yoda get slapped and laughing so hard :D

user362639
I mean story ellements

7th Sea does have a bit of alignment though, because player characters have to be Heroes. With a capital H.
The mechanical background of a character is based on their nationality and their choice of two backgrounds - mainly stuff they did before they became a swashbuckling Hero.
However, there's a lot of non-mechanical but nevertheless important considerations. Which church does the character belong to? Do they support Queen Elaine of Avalon or the independence efforts of some more radical Inish and Highlanders? Which Ussuran monarch do they bow to? What do they think of nobles, peasants, burghers or other social classes in general?

user362639
2:27 PM
that what I meant

user362639
they had lots of background

user362639
2:42 PM
hey @Rubiksmoose

howdy

Whats up @Rubiksmoose

user362639
yah now we have something to talk about

user362639
SAY MUCH INTERESTING @Rubiksmoose

Not much interesting. How about you all?

user362639
2:51 PM
talking about 7th sea

ah. I've never played it so unfortunately I'm not going to be a very interesting addition to this lol

user362639
ehh technicly

user362639
OHH NOOO

user362639
HOW DID I DO THAT

user362639
you are TECHNICALLY the most interesting since there are nobody else talking

2:56 PM
I can't honestly say much about 7th Sea either, I mean, I haven't actually played it yet.

@Mustachachu And me?

user362639
I got the books from kviiri

I'm talking now

user362639
Ok

user362639
well thats good

user362639
2:57 PM
that y'all are now talking

But I'm only here to advertise

@Mustachachu They're just the free bit. The actual book has additional content over those pdfs.

user362639
well I will use whats given

user362639
lets change the subject

3:02 PM
cya

user362639
hey @DavidCoffron

from TV Tropes:
> There is apparently a module for D&D 3.5 whose pages have a legend across the bottom of every single page that reads, simply, KILL THEM ALL.
3
^ anyone has any clue about this one?

user362639
:/

I don't remember any module matching this claim, not even things like Tomb of Horrors.

user362639
sounds interesting :)

3:23 PM
BTW, sorry for the OT but I think asking here as opposed as the other room is probably more fitting in this case.

@Derpy One one hand, Tvtropes isn't really the most reliable source. On the other hand, there are so many 3.5 modules that the claim is probably true regardless.

@Derpy This may be a valid question for main as a product identification

That is a good point. I think it would fit that category perfectly actually.

I have a MLP related chat board on the other server (chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/781/sugarcube-corner) but have been planing to move on this one (because many user don't have the required rep to chat on the main meta server). Would anyone mind if I opened the room here under your site rooms? Been thinking about Science&Fiction too, but I somehow like it here more.
@Rubiksmoose Then I guess I could actually post that question. But it will have to wait a few hour since I will have to go out soon.

@Derpy I personally don't have a problem with it, though the connection to RPGs is tenuous. I think mod buy-in will be key here?

3:30 PM
@Rubiksmoose I know, that's why I am still considering where to move to. Preferably NOT Anime.

@Derpy Mmmmaybe a better fit for Scifi & Fantasy stack, but then again, not all of our rooms are necessarily on-topic

user357094
@Derpy The TV & Film stack might be a good fit

@AVeryLargeBear another option I considered yep.

Unless you find a MLP ttrpg and use it as proof. It probably exists.

yep. There is.
Tails of Equestria

3:46 PM
@Derpy there's hundreds of modules and it could've been any amateur one

@doppelgreener I think they implied it was official, since they also mentioned the "classic" deathtrap that is "Tomb of Horror", but you may never know

"there is apparently a module for D&D 3.5e" doesn't really inspire much confidence, since it's hearsay for a thing everyone was making modules for

Am I correct in thinking that this ruling has little impact? How does a Gloom Stalker's Dread Ambusher's timing interact with Extra Attack? cc @NautArch
I truly can't think of any way this makes a difference besides the very minor thing pointed out in the answer.

that's my clue too. But considering I saw an advertisement on Inquest once that advertised a D&D module like it was a mold-removal cleaning product (Remove those characters stains from your campaign!).... this could actually be true

@Rubiksmoose I think I'm with you. The only thing I might change would be to link in one of the questions about timing of bonus actions which tend to make it clear that the several parts of the Attack action are very temporally "loose." E.g. rpg.stackexchange.com/q/90779/23970

3:54 PM
@Rubiksmoose Assuming you have Extra Attack, are they asking if you can do your Dread Ambusher attack in between the first attack and the Extra Attack?

@nitsua60 Good idea.
@NautArch Their thesis (as laid out in comments since deleted and in their deleted answer to this question) is that the DA attack must come after your normal attacks in the same Attack action.
So the question is basically is that true or can you stick it in front of or in between attacks?

@Rubiksmoose Come to think of it, we've probably got a more on-point referent regarding Flurry of Blows.

@nitsua60 I'm not sure if the bonus action link is germane to that question as Dread Ambusher is written as being part of the Attack action rather than a separate bonus action.

@Yuuki That is a good point actually. That is OP's whole sticking point. I think it might be potentially helpful to say: this is how it works in other cases (where the attack is not part of the Attack action).

user362639
whats with the my little pony photo, haven't been paying attention

4:00 PM
21 mins ago, by Mike Q
Unless you find a MLP ttrpg and use it as proof. It probably exists.

user362639
its horrifying

I didn't click it, but why's it horrifying?

user362639
think of the bronies

That's like saying D&D is horrifying because of stereotypical basement nerds.

@Mustachachu That reminds me, back to our listing of various ttrpgs, there are countless community-made ttrpg systems floating around out there. Like most homebrew content, many of them are unbalanced and inconsistent, but now and then you'll find something playable and fun. If you and your friends like certain franchises (e.g. Pokemon) then there's probably a ttrpg for it.

user362639
4:04 PM
yah

@Mustachachu Be Nice. There is certainly at least one "brony" in here at this moment. And I have previously been part of that as well. Don't disparage other people's likes and passions please.
2

user362639
ok, ok

user362639
I won't talk bad about other people and their passions

There is exactly 1 ttrpg that I think is universally disparaged, but I won't mention it by name in fear of accidentally promoting it

4:06 PM
@MikeQ I mean, there's multiple good reasons as to why it's universally disparaged.

@Mustachachu Much appreciated. We want our community to be friendly and welcoming to all. :)

Also I think there was a ttrpg that was made by neo-nazis, and at some point, all questions related to it were removed from the site
So, that makes 2 ttrpgs that are not necessarily respected here

Plus, the disparagement tends to be reserved for the game itself.

user362639
Now thinking about it, one of the reasons I thought I might be accepted into a gaming group was because of the friendly community and am deeply sorry

@MikeQ Although again, that's the game/rulesets rather than the players.

4:16 PM
@Yuuki Right--my only point was that the multiple attacks of an Attack action have been shown on many occasions to be easily severable--bonus actions and movement, in those cases. In this question it's something ~less~ intrusive--another attack!--that we're talking about inserting into the sequence.

@Rubiksmoose It seems like if that's the question, then they're askin gif they can break up their attack action, no?

@NautArch No because it wouldn't be breaking anything up would it?

@Rubiksmoose mean, take Attack action, perform first attack, use Dread Ambush, perform Extra Attack

@NautArch But those are all "Attack action"
I would say that the answer I put forth is trying to say that there is no defined order that the components of an Attack action must be taken in.

@Rubiksmoose I think i'm in agreement :) But would you say that you'd need to make your first attack before Dread Ambush?

4:26 PM
@NautArch No.

@Rubiksmoose So you can "declare" an action but not actually do it?
as long as you actually do it during your turn?

@NautArch No. You are doing it. The DA attack is part of the attack action. It is treated identially to every other part of the Attack. Taking Attack1 or Attack2 or DA attack doesn't matter the order.

@Rubiksmoose Hmm, but it requires you to take the Attack action in order to use it. If you haven't yet taken the Attack action, how have you passed that gate?

@NautArch Ah, I see what you are saying.

@kviiri Still not? Having startup problems with your campaign?

4:34 PM
@NautArch By that logic I guess you would say that it would have to come after the first attack but after that I wouldn't matter.

@Rubiksmoose that's my take, at least.

@NautArch Can you think of any case where this restriction/ruling would actually matter?

Tonight, I have the second part of the crazy combat against what seems to be an upgraded elder brain and couple of illithids
Where i'm currently believing that a couple of my party members are traitors

@Rubiksmoose wait why doesn't it matter?

@DavidCoffron It doesn't matter in the sense that the rules don't restrict what order they need to come in.
Does that make sense?

4:46 PM
@Rubiksmoose oh. I gotcha.
I suppose it kinda matters if you have a weapon that grapples (like the lasso homebrew we say on the stack a bit ago)

@DavidCoffron No bringing homebrew edge cases in :)

True
@NautArch this the elder brain that doesn't need to incapacitate to control?

@DavidCoffron that's the one
I'm trying to figure out when/if I can stop attacking my friend and focus on the true enemy.
As a vengeance paladin, he really is not my focus
and i've spent some turns on him already
I think at this point, it's safe for me to move away and start going towards the battle with the threat that if he pursues, i'm gonna kill him. ANd if he leaves, i'm gonna kill him.

Is it unable to break free every turn (a DC 18 isn't that high and he should eventually get free)
You also give him a bonus with your aura no?

@DavidCoffron I'm the one under the influence

4:53 PM
Why haven't you broken Free? Paladin have god saves and proficiency in cha
Unless you just aren't taking damage
Oops. Wis*
Wait. @NautArch psychic link doesn't give him control. It's dominate monster im pretty sure.
Which means you didn't have to be incapacitated

@DavidCoffron He's having it work like Psychic Link is active. Then on another turn he'll call for an Insight check. I've rolled as a high as a 27 and still been told that I believe one of my friends is a traitor.
I guess that's the Sense Thoughts

Aaaah. So he's just deceiving you. Makes sense. +12 deception is hard to beat. And yeah, he buffed it if you were never incapacitated
But if your busy fighting the guy you can't break the link. Pretty clever actually

@DavidCoffron Right, and my WIS ability bonus is only 1+d12

@NautArch you should have proficiency against wisdom saves. No?

@DavidCoffron Insight check, not WIS save

5:07 PM
Oh right

I can use my action to try and break the link, but i have to have a reason to do that roleplay wise.

Well you aren't actually RAW allowed to save every turn. (Unless evidence is being presented that he's not a traitor). The deception lasts for 1 hour

@DavidCoffron Right, I can't try and break the Deception - I can try and break the Psychic Link.
Which then breaks the deception?
He's been playing it like that, at least :)

Yeah. I guess technically it doesn't.

It does require the psychic link...

5:10 PM
To initiate. I can see someone ruling that breaking one breaks the other, but not RAW
You need evidence. Which means either the elder brain revealing he decieved you, or the guy proving he's not a traitor somehow

@DavidCoffron Right, and that player does go before me in initiative.
The question is, would it be reasonable for me not to attack him further but to just leave him and move on to my true targets. A traitor is different than the real enemy.

@NautArch One of the Vengeance paladin's oaths is about focusing on the greater threat, right? So if you can argue that the brain-eating monster is a greater threat than a possible party traitor, then... would that suffice?

@MikeQ And they're the ones who are actively doing something that prevents us from our goal of reaching the 9 hells. THey're my true focus, I think it's legit at this point.
And i've spent 2-3 turns on my own party at this point.
Cast Hold Person on our sorcerer, grappled this guy

5:35 PM
@NautArch I mean. You see in films all the time the "I'll deal with you later" thing.
Especially if you see your non traitor allies starting to take a beating from the Illithid

@DavidCoffron Yeah, I think i've done sufficient roleplay on this and can move forward. But if he were to attack me onhis turn, I'll probably do something more drastic. Either cast Hold Person on him or bring up a wall of stone between us (he has a move of 0 while grappled so can't escape it) and then move towards my 'true' allies.

user362639
6:38 PM
are you the only one left moose

It looks like SimonH is here too!

user362639
yeahhhhhh

user362639
and now we have @KernelPanic

Hallo

user362639
Hey simon, do you have a interesting character you can tell us about

6:44 PM
Uhmm mine are kinda boring but I've seen some interesting ones
I was playing with a friend once who had a female drow who wanted to be a dwarf
she was like 7-8 feet tall
I played a dwarf character so when she wasn't drinking, she looked to my character for validation. Also more beer, because my character could brew beer.

user362639
even if your character is kinda boring, I'll still enjoy them

awww thanks dude
do you have anything to share?

user362639
I have a interesting variant human wizard.

user362639
or a drow warlock

user362639
you choose

6:49 PM
human wizard sounds pretty cool

user362639
Ok here we go

user362639
this might take a while

that's ok
I got all day

user362639
so my wizard that I made goes to broxnyce, institute for wizard

user362639
and is fairly famous in his college for his skill and ability to learn and use spells so easily

user362639
6:53 PM
And he even got to be the president of magic chess

user362639
But he had a rival unknown to him, jealous of his power and skill

magic chess? like in harry potter?

user362639
kinda yeah

user362639
so he ambushed him (my wizard) and he blacked out

user362639
when he awoke he felt a huge bump on his head, thinking he probably hit it on the way down to the ground

user362639
6:57 PM
he went home and decided to take a relaxing bath in his backyard spring

user362639
he had a very small bar of soap left, so he used enlarge/reduce to make it larger

lol

user362639
then the first thing he realized, was that his dragon tooth (which is his arcane focus, which has runes on it that glow reddish-orange when used to cast a spell) and second the soap didn't grow

user362639
when he went back to broxnyce, the high counsel, which pretty much are different heads of magic, concluded that someone used dark magic on him to strip away his arcana

user362639
they were able to restore his arcana, but they said they couldn't bring back his true power

7:02 PM
o heck

user362639
they said the only way to truly get his arcana fully restored, was to go on a journey and grow his strength and power back

user362639
And on the way he is really squirmy and cautious all the time, now knowing that his arcana could be stripped at any time

user362639
:D

that's a good one

user362639
I am going to give him the prodigy feat from Xanathar's guide

7:06 PM
what's that?

user362639
since he knows the spells but can't cast them

user362639
I going to read it to you

Prodigy instead of bonus to stats?

user362639
no

Variant human or 4th level feat?

user362639
7:09 PM
Oh I get it Variant human

user362639
Not 4th level feat

user362639
thats the feat Im going with

I think you can learn languages with downtime and money.

user362639
yeah but it gives me 1 free language to go with the ones I already have

user362639
going to eat lunch will be back

7:12 PM
cya dude

7:27 PM
@Mustachachu V. Humans are neat, but do you have aw ay to handle no darkvision?

@NautArch darkvision isn't all that great. Still disadvantage on perception.

yeah just use torches

I recommend lanterns
They last longer and aren't as easily doused.

good point.

unintentionally... plus torches just smell awful and make a lot of smoke.
Adventuring with torches would be truly miserable.
youtube.com/watch?v=HQZqbGME5HY toches indoors by Lindybeige

7:37 PM
@ColinGross Helpful for not saying "here i am!" in the dark, though :)

@NautArch Marginally more than walking about in metal armor and equipment. Being sneaky is tough.

Sup dudes

hayyy

I'm making a necromancer who has schizophrenia and doesn't realize his brothers are gone so he just thinks he's waking them up but he's raising the dead and he goes shopping with them and stuff

holy cow that's perfect for like a comedy campaign or something

7:42 PM
He doesn't realize anything is wrong, it's kinda sad if you think about it, but it can go both ways

@ColinGross very true :)
but it also means at night, you've got to have one hand holding the light

and like the climax to his subplot could be him realizing what's going on and trying to cope

@NautArch But darkvision is pretty nice for sneaking in dim light.

which means no Sword&Board or two-handed weapons.

@SimonH. It could happen, but schizophrenia doesn't just go away

7:44 PM
@NautArch Always have a hireling or two. They're cheap.

@LukeSommers well, in a universe of magic, anything's possible right?

I suppose

@ColinGross i don't think i've played with hirelings in a campaign inthe past 4 years :P

He has the Haunted One background

@NautArch I'm still 2nd edition at heart... so yeah 10' pole and hirelings

7:46 PM
He also has Toll The Dead

@NautArch Had a DM that liked to choose the hirelings as targets. Took him a long time to sort out that the players had an equation for the actual cost of hirelings based on how many were expected to actually survive.

@ColinGross Heh, i think we generally opt for no hirelings so that we don't share XP

@NautArch Hirelings don't get XP. They can't level.
But they do count against you for encounter level.
So yeah.. they do reduce the xp earned if they are combat capable.

@ColinGross doesn't matter, they get XP.
exactly "Any NPC that accompanies the adventurers acts as a party member and earns a full share of experience points. When determining the difficulty of a combat encounter (see chapter 3), make sure to include all NPC party members. - DMG, p.92"

@NautArch I see that reference. I was thinking of porters and other unskilled support staff per the PHB equipment section.
Hmm... subtracting the guard cr from the encounter was probably overly penalizing at low levels, but advantageous at higher... I wonder where that inflection was.
