12:03 AM
Also as I recall, Ghidora won once

Ben
Haha fair enough

But that was in a whole different story format and the only time he was on the same side as Godzilla

Ben
Tbh the earliest Godzilla movie I saw was the one in the 90's

I have seen far from all of them
I did know a guy for a while who saw and re-watched all of them though

Ben
So I know of the other monsters, but I haven't seen them in action

12:06 AM
Half the things he talked about were Godzilla related
I liked him XD

Ben
Haha
I bet when Godzilla came out, God thought "Damn that's a way cooler name"

Lol
Ghidora, Mothra, and Godzilla are my favorites

Ben
@trogdor This is where I'm at. Mothra really doesn't sound all that exciting to me, since my understanding is that it's basically just a giant Moth

Mothra,.... Is the one with conviction

I hate Mothra. He was incredibly annoying in Oracle of Seasons.

12:10 AM
Godzilla is the big main guy, but he is all over the place in terms of motivation

Ben
@Miniman Hahahahahahaha

Mothra is the monster who isn't strong but is there to save Tokyo anyway

Ben

That's what I like about Mothra

Ben
@trogdor Ahh so he's the little guy standing up against the impossible foe

12:12 AM
And to be fair sometimes she ties Godzilla and they both die ( when he's the bad guy)

@Ben she

Ben
@trogdor Oh! Yes! I did know that!
@BESW Does anybody?

Lol

@BESW The Zelda series uses Mothra as a boss a few times, except technically it's actually Mothula.

12:14 AM
My favorite movie involes all three of them and Rodan

Ben
@BESW you should enter into negotiations cos they stole your title. The new Godzilla movie is subtitled "King of Monsters"

It's hilarious

Ben
@Miniman It's a frustrating fight because you can be pushed through the floor, and every time you do, the boss fight restarts

@Ben Yep - but while that's a Zelda staple, the arena for Mothula is extremely conducive to falling.

Ben
Doesn't help that all the attacks knock you back a long way
I remember just spamming the jump in that fight haha

12:18 AM
@Ben yes,... We should sue,... Them
Suuuuure
XD

Ben
@Miniman Speaking of, I recently started playing a new round of BotW.

@Ben As an LADX player, it's always bizarre to me that the Oracle games give you the Power Bracelet before the Roc's Feather.

Ben
Somehow it's more fun
@Miniman I found the opposite, since Seasons was my first GBC game haha

@Ben You already really liked it, right?

Ben
Yeah :)

12:21 AM
@Ben I'm still angry about one thing - I was stuck for weeks because there's a puzzle where you have to push a pot.
Pushing pots was impossible in LADX, so it never occurred to me that that was an option.

Ben
I think it's cos I have a handle on the game now... I haven't played in a while, so it's kinda fresh... but getting back into it was pretty smooth

I was trying everything - I figured there had to be a way to place a lifted pot down without smashing it or something.

Ben
@Miniman I like those puzzles where you have to think outside the box... there was one with a giant button, and 3 chests. Normally you wouldn't think to use them, but that was the solution
The ones I don't enjoy are the motion puzzle ones... where you have to use the controller to rotate the "puzzle".

@Ben But...it's not great to spend years training people to know that chests can't be moved, and then suddenly be like "well, obviously, you needed to move the chests".

Ben
Fair haha
But then again, this game is a huge jump in a lot of other things as well.

12:26 AM
No kidding.

Ben
Using food for healing, armour sets, open world or sandbox exploration... They did pretty well considering

It does come out of a franchise that has spent a lot of time establishing certain things
I think the complaint can be made that the should have showed you chests can be used to solve puzzles if they were going to spring a puzzle involving that in it
I do think it's good to break some of the constraints of the franchise,... But don't just do it and Not show people what the difference is
Phone
Stop adding . After. Random
.words
.....

Ben
12:59 AM
@miniman someone was complaining about Sekiro with the argument of "Trying new things is dangerous"

1:14 AM
I would just say, again, trying new things is generally good but you still need to signal big upsets
Zelda in particular has spent a lot of time establishing things
Some of which BotW has subverted
That's actually cool and at least as many or near as many people like that as dislike it

Ben
@trogdor Well, Shadows Die Twice is a completely new game. It's completely separate from its other games, so "new" is exactly what they're doing

But they still are on the hook to,... Show people how to handle the new stuff, in my oppinion
@Ben ah

Ben
@trogdor Dark souls said "Here's a broken sword. Go"
Lol

@Ben Yeesh. No surprise, but still...ugh.

@Ben that absolves no one in my opinion
Also technically it's not the same thing
For how hard Dark Souls is, it was not only billed that way but is pretty forgiving for a hard game

Ben
1:30 AM
@trogdor Yeah. The whole death cycle meant less than it normally does.

I have not played it but I have seen some playthrough of it, and beyond needing to run back to the boss, dying isn't a huge deal in it
It runs almost entirely on trail and error, and while that isn't my thing at least I can admit they aren't pulling a huge switcheroo on you mechanically
At least as far as I've seen

Q: Make 'shadowrun-5e' a synonym of 'shadowrun-sr5'

A Very Large BearThe shadowrun-5e has only two questions, and appears to be synonymous with shadowrun-sr5. It should be made a synonym of the much more popular tag shadowrun-sr5.

Ben
Meh. I liked it. It was a change of pace in a wold of FPS and Open World RPGs.

I'm not saying it's bad
Just not my thing
Furthermore, I make the distinction between it and BotW because it isn't throwing the Same specific kinds of curve ball at you
All in all I think BotW handled things fine, at least according to those who liked it
But if I had to throw a stone at it at all it would be that it doesn't teach you how it's different from previous Zelda games in some minor ways that I would have preferred
Besides the weapon breakage i mean
Because that's the reason I won't play it myself
I think having weapons other than the master sword or a stand in for it are great, but having to replace weapons all through the game, being forced to through them breaking even, irks me
That doesn't mean I think Dark Souls or BotW are bad, I just wouldn't personally play either
I was intrigued enough by both to (at least eventually) watch playthroughs of them
Just not enough that I thought playing them would be fun for me in particular

FWIW I'm fine with it being here (and one can always ignore the SmokeDetector if it's an inconvenience right?)

@Ben Smokey had to withstand a big wave of "black magic services" spam some time ago (involving some random user/entity called "baba"), so its training probably is still biased against any mentioning of voodoo, black magic and such.

HELLO NAUTARCH

@AidanLancaster Howdy howdy

user362639
1:06 PM
my favorite class has to be wizards

@AidanLancaster So far, the Bard has been my favorite class. I've had long plays with a Paladin and a Bard, and have done some short runs with a ranger and druid/barb.
My next major campaign I've got a Wizard prepared and am super excited to play him.

user362639
@NautArch do you know about adventure league

@AidanLancaster only a very little bit

PEOPLE ARE TALKING AGAIN

Aside from my usual d&d game, ive been playing pandemic legacy weekly

@AidanLancaster please stop the caps :)

and since last session i've fallen totally in love with it. Total recommendation for anyone who likes pandemic and can commit to 12-24 games of it

@SirCinnamon Heh. I dunno - it'll be a close one. We still have some Big Bads to kill before we can try and get him back.
And i'm currently attacking another party member.

1:42 PM
PC combat?! but why?

user362639
vengeance

@SirCinnamon I think an elder brain is convincing me

@NautArch We'll we've all been there

We can try and save against it if presented with information that challenges the belief, but the last round the PC tried to hurt me to shake me free and all that did was further convince me that he's a traitor.
Oh, you're attacking me? Yeah, you're not with me anymore.

@BESW It's the one reason why I may leave this traitor to attack the Big Bads. He's not really my focus and it's more important to do my job then it is to stop the traitor.

Friends! I'm looking to try a new class for DnD 5e. I've played as a Barbarian and a Bard, but am looking to try something new (maybe from Xanthars?) - has anyone tried anything from Xanthars that they really enjoyed?

@B.S.Morganstein Looks like you're going in order. Cleric next?
=)
Also, long time no see--welcome back!

@B.S.Morganstein What do you want to do primarily?
Do you want to be a caster? Do Melee? A bit of both? Ranged? etc

user362639
1:59 PM
i've got the xanathars guide in front of me

@B.S.Morganstein Kensei Monk, although I think it's more because of Monk than the particular subclass.

@B.S.Morganstein Swashbuckler Rogue, personally, though it's not as much "from" XGtE as it's just in XGtE.

Basically Kensei allows Monks to choose additional weapons that count as monk weapons and have some other minor perks.

user362639
making a circle of the shepherd druid is pretty sweet

@nitsua60 Swashbuckler is very nice.

2:07 PM
@Rubiksmoose We've got a swashbuckler in one of our games and it's a lot of fun to watch. Panache!

user362639
the druid gets to summon animal spirits that make you and your teammates get special affects

@NautArch In our game our Swashbuckler has a negative CHA mod :'D

user362639
you learn to read and write sylvan

@B.S.Morganstein Worth noting here that Xanathar's does not introduce any new classes, just new subclasses. Just in case that was a confusion point. Even so XGE definitely has some fun options to explore.

user362639
when you summon a animal with a spell they get more hit points and there attacks are considered magical

user362639
2:12 PM
at level ten the creatures you summon that end their turn in the spirit totems aura regain hit points equal to half your druid level

@AidanLancaster only if the DM summons that particular creature

The reason Monk works well for me is that it offers enough choice in combat while being simple enough to build. Not having to pick spells is great but one still gets cool spell-like abilities
And a bajillion attacks per turn

@nitsua60 it has indeed been a while!
@NautArch I've liked the versatility of a bard, but am honestly open to anything. Just looking to try something new
@kviiri why the Kensei monk?

@B.S.Morganstein How do you generate stats?

and @nitsua60 why swashbuckler rogue? I suspect this would be similar to playing a bard, no?
@NautArch I have the choice of rolling or taking the standard array, though I'll probably take SA just to be safe

2:17 PM
@B.S.Morganstein I picked it mostly because of the flavor (I wanted to emulate the Avenger class from 4e)

@B.S.Morganstein what's your roll methodology?

@kviiri What is unique about the Kensei subclass?

@B.S.Morganstein Kensei does look pretty nice, too. Got some good social stuff and good combat.

@NautArch roll 4d6, drop the lowest number, repeat 6 times

@B.S.Morganstein I mean it depends on how you build the Bard. Bards can have so many viable builds it is hard to say how it is different. That being said, Rogues have a lot of different qualities from Bards. They get a lot of proficiencies sure, but they are primarily a weapons-focused class by default. Swashbuckler is amazing because you get the ability to dart in and out of combat, hitting an opponent and then leaving without taking OAs.

2:19 PM
@Rubiksmoose is this not already built into the rogue with disengage as a bonus?

@B.S.Morganstein You don't have to use your BA to disengage. Frees it up for other uses.

@B.S.Morganstein I don't play bards.

@nitsua60 Bards play you!

user362639
and at level 14 if you become incapacitated or are reduced to 0 hit points, you automatically gain the benefits as if you casted conjure beast using a level 9 spell slot. the if creatures don't take command from you, the creatures protect you and attack your enemies. they only last 1 hour and can only be used after a long rest. the spell summon beast with a CR difficulty of 2 or lower

2:21 PM
@B.S.Morganstein I was making a DEX-based striker and went with CHA/skills/party face being my "secondary" bit of party impact. So swashbuckler went pretty nicely.

@B.S.Morganstein Rogue and Bard are pretty different. It's combat vs magic utility/support.

@B.S.Morganstein Yeah, what @NautArch said. Both times.

user362639
I was not paying any attention to these comments

@B.S.Morganstein WHat level do you think this character will get to?

I'll be retiring my Bard in the current campaign, so I'll be starting at level 16

2:22 PM
@B.S.Morganstein Specifically, it can free up that bonus action for a Two-Weapon fighting tactic.

@B.S.Morganstein The weapons. They can choose Kensei weapons (which count as Monk weapons) quite freely. So you can wield a longsword for good damage while still having access to all the usual Monk perks

Also I'm reading about the Kensei monk and am a bit confused, isnt the whole point of monk to go all unarmed attacks and using ki points to support your attacks? What is the benefit of suddenly having Kensei weapons?

@B.S.Morganstein Doing 1d10 + modifiers damage instead of 1d4+modifiers, for one.

@kviiri Sure, higher hit die is nice, but iirc most of the ki abilities pertain specifically to your unarmed attacks, no?

And being able to use magical weapons (of course any Monk can, but all the Monk weapons are rather sad)
@B.S.Morganstein Not really. Flurry of blows allows you to make two unarmed attacks but apart from that I think they're mostly locked behind "unarmed or monk weapon"

2:26 PM
I'm really interested in playing an Inquisitive Rogue from XGTA, as sort of like an undercover policeman - I think it's probably one of the less combat optimised Rogue builds but looks pretty fun roleplay wise to me.

However, Kensei's not really about "being a master of the blade" (a point I always need to stress to my party). It's more like getting to wield a badass blade while retaining the benefits of being a Monk.

Do the Kensei weapons count as monk weapons for the purposes of ki abilities?

@B.S.Morganstein yeo
Yep
Eg. the first melee kensei weapon power is agile parry, which gives +2 AC for wielding one's kensei weapon but forgoing at least one strike of it in favor of one's unarmed attack
So if the party finds a cool magic blade, it's usually better in the hands of the paladin or the fighter

@Tiggerous Thing is, I feel like you'd have to work pretty hard to make a rogue ineffective in combat. The majority of a rogue's combat effectiveness you can't even select against. (Sneak attack, cunning action, uncanny dodge and evasion....) I mean, you can tactically stink, but it's hard to not have good combat options.

@kviiri makes sense, I'm just trying to figure out the advantages to kensei over a more traditional monk build

2:32 PM
@B.S.Morganstein Another option to throw your way: I played a Cavalier briefly and that was really fun. Don't be fooled though, Cavalier has basically nothing to do with riding a steed..

@B.S.Morganstein there are many. Biggest one is ranged monk weapon though

@B.S.Morganstein Mostly, the answer is "somewhat more damage". Although Agile Parry (the aforementioned +2 AC) is superb in larger combats

@B.S.Morganstein Well, I guess freedom of speech. You kensei a lot of things that you'd probably keep silent about as a traditional monk.

Longbow is very good

@nitsua60 Unlike the PF rogue as I remember it, which was very hard to make viable.

2:33 PM
@Rubiksmoose can you elaborate on Cavalier?

@Rubiksmoose Not being able to sneak attack a wide variety of monster types suuuucks.

Ooh yeah, longbow is good. And kenseis get "kensei's shot" feature that gives 1d4 per shot fired on turn. It's not much, but gives a bit of tactical edge when fighting ranged.

@kviiri maybe I need to better familiarize myself with monks since I'm just not seeing the benefits beyond the higher damage output at the cost of more unarmed attacks (though admittedly gaining +2 AC which is pretty nice)

Dart as a kensei weapon rocks too

@nitsua60 I definitely agree - It's still going to be fairly strong compared to some other classes.

2:35 PM
I mean, having an easy fallback ranged option that deals martial arts die (+1d4 with kensei's shot) damage.
@B.S.Morganstein like I said, I think most of my fun comes from Monk more than Kensei in particular :)
I'm not really familiar with the other Monk subclasses.

@kviiri totally fair, I'm just reading now of an indiana jones type character using the whip as a kensei weapon

@kviiri open first is good, sun soul sucks, long death is tanky (kinda), five elements is weird, shadow is niche

@B.S.Morganstein Sure thing. So a lot of the Cav's abilities focus on encouraging enemies to attack you and punishes them for attacking peopel other than you. This makes a fun front line tank especially if you synergize with high HP/AC and make your self a damage sponge. You can also support a bit at higher levels by actually adding AC to creatures when they get attacked and/or reducing the damage.

Yeah @DavidCoffron I'm mostly familiar with open fist

In short it seems Cav is a front-line fighter subclass with some fun support and strategic tactics thrown in.

2:38 PM
@Rubiksmoose Sounds similar to going shield master/sentinel combo as a barbarian

@B.S.Morganstein Kind of the same strategy overall, but a bit of a different feel since the abilities do different things. And some of them give explicit boosts to your allies instead of focusing just on tanking.

@Rubiksmoose Gotcha, I'll take a read of that as well

Man, I wish I heard about Cavalier before this campaign.

Any other general suggestions for something fun? Currently in the party we have a Goliath fighter (polearm master build), a champion fighter, and an illusion wizard, as well as a moon druid

@AidanLancaster do I see you're starting up in Adventurer's League this week?

2:42 PM
@B.S.Morganstein Oh wow. Seems like your party has a lot of front-liner potential already.

@B.S.Morganstein Kensei is a bit like open fist but it focused more on diverse combat options rather than just deal damage

@Yuuki oh yeah? Why is that? Got some inspiration?

user362639
I am @nitsua60

user362639
attending AL

@Rubiksmoose Yeah and that's why i was happy with my bard playing support. But the DM is effectively targeting my character cause he's the only character that has survived since we started the campaign at level 3
Last session he nerfed me giving me disadvantage on ALL skill rolls since my soul was somehow stolen by a hag

2:44 PM
@Rubiksmoose I wanted to play a front-line character with battlefield control.

@AidanLancaster Cool. You have your character sorted out? Is it at a store, or somewhere else?

So I figure might as well just roll something new since he couldn't kill me in a TPK scenario previously (praise the gods for Dimension Door)

user362639
frontline games clarksville

@Yuuki Battlemaster fighter is more controlling than Cavalier

@B.S.Morganstein Aw man, that kind of play always sucks for me. Especially if that wasn't the agreement impression that you were under when you joined.

user362639
2:45 PM
@nitsua60 its frontline games

user362639
in clarksville

@Rubiksmoose Yeah the whole party has been having issues with the DM tbh, he's playing the game very adversarially, making it a point to try and kill us each week, instead of designing challening puzzles or enocunters

@AidanLancaster I don't know what that is.

user362639
Its a game store

@AidanLancaster Just a note, but you may want to be careful giving out personal info/location to internet strangers.

2:46 PM
^^

eg last session he threw a kraken at us (already too high of a CR iirc), and then buffed it with legendary actions and lair actions as well

user362639
Yah been trying to change my name

I only escaped cause I could dimension door 500 ft away
Everyone else died

user362639
planning to make a tome lock drow.

@Rubiksmoose once let it slip they're not actually a moose. The internet knows, man. (Cube status still indeterminate.)

user362639
2:47 PM
I must get the darkness spell

user362639
or its going to SUCK

@B.S.Morganstein Another thing is, I have scarcely looked at Kensei abilities beyond L10 because our campaign only goes that far. I'll take a look now, just out of curiosity :P

@AidanLancaster In this case it was more about the fact that you just told us the physical location you were playing. You can change your display name here: (should work) rpg.stackexchange.com/users/edit/362639. Do note that once you change it you won't be able to change it again for a while.

@kviiri sounds good!

@nitsua60 My shameful secret! And after all this time learning to type with hooves :'(

@kviiri they don't do much in my experience. Agile Party is the main reason to get the subclass (and for new monk weapons)

It says error Rubiksmoose

@DavidCoffron That was my assessment, pretty much. Deft Strike is good if one gets abundant short rests, because it's guaranteed extra damage, but seems unlikely to have a major impact.

@B.S.Morganstein High level bards can be DM killers.

Agile Parry rocks though.

@Rubiksmoose I feel like rearranging the stickers with hooves is the bigger accomplishment.

@NautArch Yeah I can appreciate that. I've been trying to not hog the spotlight and let the party shine, but whenever there's real trouble the party falls back to old Carlos the Bard to save the day

@B.S.Morganstein At this point, I think your character should just retire and prepare escape plans everyday.

@NautArch college of whispers ftw

Sharpen the Blade (spend 1-3 Ki points to make one's kensei weapon have that much bonus for attack and damage rolls for one minute) is pretty cool too, although it only works on non-magic weapons so you have to lug around a non-magic kensei sword.

@kviiri although in a low-no magic setting it's one of the few ways to get magic items

And reroll one missed Monk weapon attack at L17.
@DavidCoffron Yeah, true.

@DavidCoffron Lore FTW :)

@nitsua60 Oh man you have no idea. You've got to use teeth. And those stickers taste real nasty.

@kviiri is that a concentration thing, or just ON?

@NautArch valor is the least used subclass in my experience ever since sword came out
> as a bonus action, you can expend up to 3 ki points to grant one kensei weapon you touch a bonus to attack and damage rolls when you attack with it. The bonus equals the number of ki points you spent. This bonus lasts for 1 minute or until you use this feature again.

@nitsua60 Just on!

@NautArch But seriously Lore is so good lol

nice

It worked @Rubiksmoose

@Rubiksmoose I mean early magical secrets is okay and cutting words saves lives, but what makes Lore so attractive over sword or one of the RP monsters

@DavidCoffron Open Fist indeed seems rather potent, now that I actually look into it. Knocking enemies prone with Flurry would be devastatingly effective!

@AidanLancaster In the future you can get there by just clicking your user icon/rep/badges in the upper right hand corner of the mainsite (not in chat) and going to "Edit Profile & Settings"

@kviiri it's the Battlemaster of monk. Good tactical decisions makes it one of the strongest subclasses in the game

@AidanLancaster It'll take a little while (minutes, less than an hour) for that change to percolate through to chat.
@DavidCoffron Gosh, I love pure battlemaster, though.

user362639
I was wondering why it didn't change

@DavidCoffron Magical Secrets is more than just okay. And Cutting Words give you a LOT of options for the use of the inspiration die.

@DavidCoffron MS is amazing though. I'm honestly not sure how it stack against the other subclasses since I've never played as or with them, but the ability to choose any spells is much more than "OK" IMO.

Letting you choose to use your BA to give the die to teammate OR use it gainst an enemy as a reaction is a lot of utility.
