Interesting tidbit: putting up a bounty does not let you earn above 200 rep for that day. Unlike downvoting or getting downvoted which allow you to earn those points back even if the total positive points earned would be above 200.
Magic: the Gathering had some major format issues over the past couple of years in which format-breaking combos and cards came out that really should have been spotted in playtesting, but nobody spotted them. It turns out that's because playtesting teams featured nobody who was professional or otherwise highly competitive at tournaments. So they assembled a playtesting team that's staffed entirely by professional tournament players.
I don't push out a stupid macro update at work unless I have at least 3 people test it out. (Which, to be fair, takes much less time than RPG playtesting but still...)
e.g. the Kaladesh block of cards featured an infinite combo. Nobody in playtesting noticed this. This is despite an almost identical combo being banned at the very same time Kaladesh would have been getting developed and playtested. Some of the pro players commented they noticed the combo within minutes of the involved cards being previewed, and they were stunned the playtesting team didn't notice it over the course of months.
It is. It is embarrassing. It was embarrassing. They were embarrassed. One of the major public figures among MTG players said "Hey y'all need to have a playtesting team consisting of actual pros." A couple of months later WOTC created exactly that.
The combos in summary are: - There is a card called Splinter Twin. This lets you tap a creature to make a copy of it. There is also a card called Delver Exarch. Delver Exarch lets you untap a creature. What you do is use Splinter Twin to create a copy of Delver Exarch, and use the new Delver Exarch to untap the creature you tapped. Repeat for infinite Delver Exarchs. - Splinter Twin was banned. - Simultaneous to that, they developed a card (Saheeli Rai) that could immediately create one copy of any creature you had. They also developed Felidar Guardian, which would "blink" any card you cont…
Also they didn't realise people would use Aetherworks Marvel (which lets you just get any creature for free, within certain constraints, which you could manipulate) to cheat out Emrakul, the Promised End (the biggest, most costly, most powerful creature available at the time) easy peasy super early in the game for free, which is basically an "I win now" trick.
This is why I play hearthstone, they can just retroactively edit cards
You would think that would encourage less thought out design but apparently printing costs didnt give WotC any pause in creating cards like that so... maybe not

@doppelgreener there was an infinite combo back when I played (mid-90s) that I don't think they ever bothered to fix. We all just sorta agreed not to use it in play.

Mostly they accept infinite combos, depending on the amount of cards they take to perform and what they do. For example, infinite-mana combos happen and are accepted depending on the format and how early in the game you can do them or how reliably you can do them or how easy they are to mess up.
The issue with the Cat Lady combo is you could pull it off on turn 3 or 4. Splinter Twin combo could be pulled off on turn 2 or 3. In both cases you win the next turn. Those are too fast for their respective formats, so it becomes a combo that needs to be stopped. If Cat Lady couldn't be done until turn 8, that would be another matter, because at that point someone ought to win.
@doppelgreener I don't recall the "play face up" but, but maybe that's it. I feel like Ice Age is right about when I left off playing so it's a possibility...?
Speaking of which, question to the room, asking for your totally from-the-hip guesses here: what fraction of D&D players have some familiarity with M:tG? (Let's say, "have owned decks"="familiarity" and "buy D&D product(s)"="D&D players.)
@goodguy5 I would say there is a very strong case for RAW saying you can because you can because you can cast featherfall as a reaction to falling which means that instantly falling is not truly instantly. There is still time for reactions.
@goodguy5 I'm not really sure that it is a case of specific over general. The triggering of reaction spells is almost identical to the triggering of readied actions.
@Rubiksmoose Frankly that's ridiculous, if falling is instant, how are you supposed to lash your flaming whip around the pesky enemy wizard's foot, dragging him into the bottomless pit alongside you?
@goodguy5 "When the falling creature enters my reach" would be my suggestion. Readied action questions get tedious and broad if there is not a specific trigger being asked about.
@goodguy5 yeah 24 hours is usually what I do. After accepting you are much less likely to get an answer. I've gotten some good and surprising answers even after a day or two by waiting.

Your title should summarise your question body. The title isn't itself supposed to contain the question. (Some people may do that with it, but at peril of being unclear and creating work for us and for themselves.) It doesn't work for us to ask question A in the title and question B in the body. I can't say why I read it like that originally (possibly because it would be weird to require someone to run a battle before they figure out if it is potentially not going to work at all).

A friend keeps telling me that I should write a novel by picking up one of my RPG campaigns and imagining players for it. I find that advice to not be sound on a general level.
But nevertheless, today I tried and was quite happy about the result.
Feels nice to do this because now the story won't be wasted when the players don't want to follow the rails ^^

@Alphaeus I find it particularly awful myself because I am so strongly wonkish & due-process-centric in my approach to politics that it's very hard to get into a "power politics" or "might makes right" mindset for RPGs

@KorvinStarmast yeah -- part of it is that if you couldn't tell, the FF got under both Rrau's collar and mine to some extent -- LE behavior, especially in a context where it's not expected from someone and/or is coming from forces in power, tends to awaken my civic-sense (and matching indignation) rather strongly, which isn't such a bad thing IRL but as you can tell, can be slightly problematic in a campaign context
in fact: @Alphaeus and anyone else in the channel who's been following -- I wonder if it'd be possible to make "how do I keep totalitarian/authoritarian LE behavior from making me hot under the collar OOCly when it is presented in RP?" into a good mainsite question?
