@Trish Why not both?

@Trish FROM...my bad :)

I mean, that still sounds like an amazing campaign.

@NautArch are you rooting out a different cult to gift the plane to your own? What was the supposed alignment of Paladins again?

It's been going on for 3 years of our lives.

I don't think Paladins have an alignment restriction anymore, do they?

9:02 PM
@Trish The initial goal was to defeat "the great evil" which was a custom beast that was the main tool of Belial. The gov't of the land we're in is in cahoots with Belial (ruling family are fiends/demons or are working with them.) Heighboring lands have been trying to get the townsfolk to rebel, but are being arses about it. Evil army is marching towards the lands, basically to be let in by the royalty.
@Trish my paladin of vegeance is LN
tasked by anubis to destroy the evil permeating the plane

Murderhobo should be a Prestige class demanding a chaothic, non-good alignment.

@DForck42 there are 2 ways I wouldve handled this, either its a magic emporium ala 4e or (since 5e is supposed to be a much more low magic/ rare magic lore setting) made obtaining a specific sword a side quest of sorts for the party
random loot drops (or shop availability) tends to boring/frustrating
@SevenSidedDie I vtc'd with my reason because my immediate answer was to begin writing up how lettters of exchange worked between banks in england in the 1600s

@JoshuaAslanSmith just point them towards The EMbarassment of Riches

@JoshuaAslanSmith My answer would have gone a similar way, just hanseatic league and templars.

joking suggest they use the money to support a candidate for fantasy pope
then become the fantasy banking standard by the fantasy church

9:10 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith it was kinda both tbh

@JoshuaAslanSmith Aye. I left them a comment with that basic reasoning. It's a bit odd though because normally we don't close for lack of research — but in this case, the lack of research is on actual history rather than an RPG problem, so it seems to make sense as a close.

@SevenSidedDie we do at times... the "How do you roll attack?" "Is my attack roll damage?" questions were close to be closed...

@Trish Most of those we answer actually. Holds there tend to be “uh, can't quite tell what you're having trouble with”. In general though, though we don't like read-the-book-to-me questions, they're considered on-topic and not close-worthy when no other reasons are involved.

there have been a few like this before
I remember a closed question about one of the cthulu rpgs that had to do with the phone system in america in the 1920s
and its like
thats a history research question
if you know how it works and are asking about utilizing it within the ruleset thats different

@JoshuaAslanSmith someone on the dnd subreddit was asking about incorporating poker with their dnd, cause they wanted to end the session with a game of poker
i asked what they wanted to do, play poker IN the game, or actually play a game of poker, they never responded

9:20 PM
quietly discards his question about metallurgy

@JoshuaAslanSmith That's the classic one that eventually lead to “historical questions are on topic, oh wait no, no they aren't

Q: Why did the automobiles and telephones thread close?

GrahamThe discussion in Campaign Research Questions suggests that campaign research questions should be allowed. Why did At what point in the 20th Century did automobiles and telephones become ubiquitous close? It didn't seem to be off-topic. Clearly, people didn't like it, but that's a reason to down...

@DForck42 Ah, yes, the "game in a game" when the PCs go gambling. That's always tricky to handle in a way that doesn't bog things down and still feels enjoyable for everyone.

so I was about to post asking a question about the differences between Sorcerers and Wizards from a Roleplaying perspective in 5e. Best I can tell there's no questions on rpg.se about the differences even from a mechanical perspective. Y'all think a single question that covers both is too long?

@Karelzarath apparently they did KIND of answer
they're wanting to end the session by playing poker
but in character
so i asked if they wanted characters to be able to use their abilities to play (ie cheat)
otherwise... just play poker... i dunno what they want
@Ryan sorc = power from myself/heritage, warlock = power from a pact with a powerful being. that's basically the rp reason for the difference in how they fuction

@DForck42 I don't know why I bothered asking in here. I just went ahead and posted it. If people think its too broad I'll delete the second question

Q: What are the differences between Wizard and Sorceror in D&D5e?

RyanFromGDSEWhat are the differences between Wizards and Sorcerers in D&D 5e? Really, I'd like to know this from two perspectives. One I have a somewhat idea about from reading the PHB and other websites, one I don't get at all. What are the differences in the two classes from a character building backgro...

9:27 PM
@Ryan lol

:D

@Ryan i think us old-timers sometimes over-worry about asking questions
I've actually gotten more cavalier about asking questions that are on the line
either it'll get edited by someone that understands what i want, or it'll get downvoted and closed and i'll get shamed by my mod friends

sounds about right. At least this community seems nice and welcoming so it should be okay. I'm pretty sure some SE sites will downvote, close vote, leave nasty comments, and black ball any future posts you ever make

@Ryan some will, yeah
the sites i frequent (movies, rpg, and lit) are doing their best from becoming a clique
or an inside group

9:38 PM
@Ryan my answer covers the flavor side, lacking a bit on the mechanical side (i haven't played a sorc yet)

@DForck42 You can say that again. [I may not be the kind of person who's earned more rep than they've argued with their DM that only ever using Magic Missile is a perfectly valid strategy, but I've been around for a good while and I get really self-conscious when asking on SE]

@Papayaman1000 i mean, i spam vicious mockery unless the situation calls for a different spell

@DForck42 My favorite is setting up a few illusions making an opponent think they're staring down a massive dragon while the rogue casually walks behind them with their dagger readied

9:53 PM
@Papayaman1000 neat
my current dm doesn't really appreciate creative uses for things
he's a friend, and i generally enjoy playing with him, but he's not a great dm

@DForck42 Yeah, sounds like we'd get in a fight if we co-DM'd

@Papayaman1000 lol

You might notice most of my questions here revolve around dealing with RPing and/or wickedly creative players.

@DForck42 thanks. Makes it a little clearer. If a Wizard is in a party would the DM have to just kinda decide [[here's this rolled up scroll that contains a spell]] type of deal? Or how does the Wizard go off on their own to learn additional spells?

Like "So if this cursed mask binds to my flesh, could I just rip off my face?"
Final answer of RPG.SE: No... but make a CON check anyway.

10:01 PM
@Ryan there's a myriad of ways to learn. a spell scroll (unsure if you can learn from one or if you need a proper spell book), find a spell book, down time spent studying, etc.

Also, been messing around with Deep Dream programs. Apparently my app's icon becomes a Rune of Eldritch Summoning if I try to apply the style of my character sketches.

hmm okay. I think I'm going to change my Warlock to a Sorceror (since I started a Monk with a different group)

Extended Spell: "double its duration, to a maximum duration of 24 hours." --- are there really times when a 24 hour spell is used?

Fun fact: You can create a JavaScript fork bomb in two lines of code and a single URL.

@Papayaman1000 Eh, if you want Chrome to eat memory like crazy, you don't need to do it on purpose.

@Yuuki <salty>
But my brand-new crippling sodium oversaturation aside, I've been trying to think of how to spec out this new type of animal.

@Ryan Hmm... can you use Extended Spell on Ceremony?

10:17 PM
hey there @Papayaman1000 and @Yuuki

Hi.

how're things going?

@Shalvenay 'Eyyy! Starting to notice who the regulars are.
Trying to spec out this new animal.

@Papayaman1000 I'm not a regular yet, but I've been upping my fiber intake.

I present to thee the Husky, domesticated beast-of-burden of the Flabbyderms (who look like long-necked old men with the same face and triple chin).

Welp, guess I'm still sane. Now who wants these magic beans?

@Papayaman1000 Wait, am I a regular already? It's been like... a week, tops.

@Papayaman1000 Huffataur: Too good for you and they're their own high horse.

hey there @Karelzarath

@Karelzarath ...I hate you. You magnificent bastard.

10:20 PM
@Shalvenay How's it hangin'?

Senzu beans? I want senzu beans

@Ryan Sorry, the TSA doesn't allow foreign magical species.

@Karelzarath OK here

I'll sneak them on like every other edible

@Ryan But then what will Krillin be useful for?!

10:22 PM
@Papayaman1000 Yeah, I get that a lot.

@Karelzarath (+5 bonus XP for good joke. -5gp to pay licensing fees for The Who.)

@Papayaman1000 slapstick humor

@Papayaman1000 Well, if he's cooking meat while rapping, he's Krillin grillin' and illin'.

@Karelzarath You villain.
Must I direct thee to the random insult generator?

10:24 PM
@Karelzarath if he's listening to music while grillin and illin than you better believe its skrillen

@Ryan applauds master stroke, good sir.

And if he's laying back, he's straight chillin'

@Ryan But don't forget ho he's grillin'. To be fillin' that catering order.

I wonder if the other players would be upset if I deliberately made a sorcerer with no way to deal damage

Enlightning: the shocking realization that you're being electrocuted.

@Ryan Since you're here, would you mind unfreezing this chat room, please?

@Yuuki You are stricken down with a bolt of divine retribution, retroactively.

10:33 PM
@BESW aren't you a mod?

I'm italic, not blue.

@BESW ...what does any of any of this even mean
It didn't work

@Papayaman1000 italics means room owner, blue means mod

hmm then there's probably an actual button i need to find to press

@Papayaman1000 Username. Blue means diamond, italics means room owner, blue italics means literally God.

10:35 PM
@Yuuki Wait, BESW owns RPG General, but isn't even mod status?
Or alternatively just actually has a life :V

Well yeah. ROs manage chatrooms, that's the extent of their "power".
I'm RO in a few rooms but I'm not a mod anywhere.

done

For example, as a room owner I can do that.
But only an elected mod could unfreeze the room I wanted to move the messages to.

I think you have to be RO of both rooms if you're going to migrate messages.

10:37 PM
Nope.

Also, I think diamonds can either make themselves RO of any room or they can just do RO stuff without needing the RO role.

Only the emigrating room, not the immigrating room.

@Yuuki we can do whatever we want without needing to be room owner

And yeah, blue/diamond users are effective room owners everywhere.

only in chat though. we don't get any special mod privs on other parts of the exchange outside our own

10:38 PM
fun fact: since xdY has defaults for x and Y, just "d" is valid syntax

Yup! I like using 4d for fudge dice, because.

...must... petition for... dF
...
df
dF
ok

We tried, they didn't bite. So we wrote a script.
It's linked in the star bar on the Dice Roller chat.

Ah, I see.

does a DM get to know what spells each person has? If the DM gets to know I selected Counterspell it loses some of its sparkle

10:43 PM
@Ryan And that's why I've set it to a Cantrip, homebrew.
Alternatively, you can make Vancian magic more flexible by making it similar to the inventory in [that one game], where you just choose your load (or spell slots) and have whatever items (or spells) you need retroactively made part of that until you hit the limit

If we're talking about D&D and D&D-likes, then yeah, the standard assumption is the GM has access to all information about your character.
But of course since there's no such thing as D&D that'll vary from group to group.

@BESW Eyy, it's Magician! (Whatever did happen to his starred post about the new system, by the by?)

Personally I'm not fond of keeping things hidden from my fellow IRL participants; we have more fun when we're all in on the conspiracy against a character.
@Papayaman1000 Pinned posts become regular stars automagically after two weeks.

@BESW Oh.

@BESW yeah, that does seem like it works best for us

10:52 PM
@BESW That post has made me respect RPG.SE mods infinitely more, simply because of how hard it must be to try and police around that fact.

@Papayaman1000 Oh yeah, but not just the mods. Maybe it's even easier for the mods in some ways, because they're responsible for dealing with behaviour more than with content.

Hmm... I suppose if you want the *right* answer you'd do that. I guess that's what a stranger gets for waking me with an unolicited question about probability!
=)

The whole community has an ongoing struggle to embrace a plurality of playstyles.

@BESW Mmm.
I always did find it funny.
My group is more about roleplay. The system is a tool to create the setting. We're writers; we can't help it. Others see it as a system to tear apart, so they can inspect every gear, take notes on how to make them spin faster, and put it back together to make the whole system spin even faster than that.

@BESW One! True! Way!

10:56 PM
@Karelzarath Right! Out! That! Door!

lol!

@Papayaman1000 My group is evolving as an amalgam of the two: tinkering with games to optimise how the system engine pushes the kinds of stories we want to tell.

@BESW Next, you'll try telling me it's not possible to win an RPG.

@Karelzarath BODR. Roll up a new character.

@Karelzarath I'm pretty sure I won D&D 3.5 when I had to retire three characters in a row because they were making everyone else feel irrelephant.
Well, two characters. The third never hit the table.

11:00 PM
@BESW Autocorrect, or...

@Karelzarath encumbrance will fix that =)

@Papayaman1000 Irrelephant? personal quirk.

@Papayaman1000 Can't I just play my 15th-level paladin anyway?

@Karelzarath . . .
Um...
Rocks fall?
I've been toying with a character sheet generator so we can play high-deathrate campaigns. Likewise, I've been toying with a yew stick and some LEDs to make a "Wand of Bolt of Divine Retribution" to... encourage this playstyle. It's been used very disproportionately.

@nitsua60 Only until the PCs have belt pouches full of portable holes.

11:06 PM
nonsequitor: electric pepper grinders are definitely easier on my borked wrist, but they are slooooooow

@NautArch Have you tried this? youtube.com/watch?v=kqadY4DUZVQ

that man is my hero....brb. god, i love alton brown.

@NautArch AMEN.

dang, do not have all the necessary 'bits' for that...getit?

[Is it bad that I expected the pepper drill before even clicking that link?]

11:09 PM
@Karelzarath Hey, it's a 35mm film canister! My childhood was 15% 35mm film canisters.

@BESW Eh, I'm partial to 20mm canisters myself.
But 35mm are better for dicerolling...

@BESW Mine, too. I have no idea how easy they would be to find these days.

Averaging 0.40 USD in bulk on Amazon

4tbsp takes a loooong time

(My father was a freelance photographer.)

11:13 PM
@BESW ...I'm not sure if I'm slightly disappointed or incredibly jealous.

Why not both?
He specialised in jobs nobody else would take because they were too extreme. The sorts of photos that require strapping yourself to the front of a racing boat or teasing sharks or balancing on a plank of wood between two balconies thirty stories up.

@BESW I am officially making a character in honor of him next time I roll one up.

(Actually, I'm pretty sure the shark-teasing wasn't for a job; it was on spec.)

@Papayaman1000 Have you considered a high death rate system like Great Ork Gods or Paranoia?

@JoelHarmon I am partial to Paranoia.

11:17 PM
If you haven't played at least one session of Great Ork Gods, I highly recommend doing so.

@BESW Doing so.

@Papayaman1000 If he were able to understand that, he'd be tickled pink.

@BESW "Yes, sir, I'm making a-- yes, you heard that right. A fictional effigy. Who punches orcs. Yes."

Oh, sorry. I forget that the chat turnover means not as many people know--my dad's got Parkinsonian dementia with Lewy bodies. His ability to understand much of anything is spotty at best.

hey there @JoelHarmon

11:22 PM
@BESW O... oh. Ohhh.

@Shalvenay Hello there

how're things going?

@BESW I'm very sorry to hear that.

@BESW :( I'm really sorry to hear that

@Shalvenay Super busy recently

11:26 PM
ah. OK here. managed to get roped into a PF campaign :) so we'll see how that goes

Am I understanding correctly that when using something like a ranger's animal or summoned minion (chain lock) either you or the helper can take an action but not both?

@Ryan that's the way it is normally AIUI -- its why beastmaster rangers are so dang gimpy

the animal / minion should really get its own turn

@JoelHarmon, @Ryan Thank you. It's rough, but on bad caregiving days RPG.SE can be a salve for my mental stability.

@BESW I'm happy we can be here for you.

11:31 PM
@BESW one potential brighter spot: when my great uncle was under similar circumstances, including thinking it was 60 years in the past, I learned a ton about him and my family history
he was also a photographer, and his old photos and camera were a great anchor for him

so strange the the mechanics of 5e. With only one action it seems like defense is largely an after thought. I mean why would I cast a one round defensive spell. Seems all they do is delay the inevitable

@Ryan that's the Glass Cannon approach
Or, as my friend refers to it, "preemptive healing". You don't have to heal the damage a dead opponent didn't do to you.
so I'd just throw out there that if you aren't using your bonus action as well, and possibly your reaction, you aren't doing all you can

11:51 PM
@Karelzarath I've literally never seen one of these things in the wild. I don't understand why there's the assumption that all parties will have some?

@nitsua60 It's the best storage volume per gp in the game, with the added bonus of weighing nothing.

@Ryan I've definitely seen defense is an afterthought. there are some quality debuffs (like slow), but most of the time it's about kill as quickly as you can
the best defense is a good offense
@JoelHarmon yeah, i'm realized it's importantto have a character concept that can try and get all available actions include the obvious bonus, but the reaction, too.
At my table, enemies generally don't run, so having something that can use your reaction outside of OA can be big (testing that theory next session, with an NPC i control taking the Unearthed Arcana feat Blade Master)

@BESW What's impressive is how much care you give here, even on days when things are chaotic at home.
4
@Karelzarath No, I get why one would be useful. I just don't get why people on the internet seem to assume everyone has one.

@Ryan Well, it varies. The only one round defensive spell I can think of that uses your action is Blade Ward, which is a cantrip. And yeah, Blade Ward sucks. But then there's spells like Shield, Absorb Elements, Mage Armor, Mirror Image, Invisibility...
