@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Quite a close-vote history as well, unsurprisingly. I guessed it would have as soon as I saw the question, because a lot of people don't like these general genre-level questions - they're more difficult to answer than franchise-specific Googleable trivia ;-)

Tags used to mean you were an expert in a topic, right? So an author tag would call for experts about the author. The book tag would be for experts about a book. You could be a total expert in the life of Ray Bradbury but not know a lot about his stories, and vice versa you could be waxed in the stories but know nothing about the author. It's like if every PHP question was tagged with [rasmus-lerdorf] - it wouldn't make sense

All to get that number up! For what reason? No clue. I get the number itself is meaningless, but I had thought the review queues were a special place where people actually cared about the curation of the site. Not just about boosting a useless stat

What's especially irksome about all the garbage reviews (6 garbage close reviews in the past 3 days) is that the same user is already getting the largest fraction of the site reviews, and doesn't need to cheat to boost numbers...

Should tags be the thing that attracts someone to a question? For me it's more so the title that makes me click on a question and want to learn more
Sep 10, 2024 03:06
@b_jonas I take it to mean you also want to honour their memories and/or appreciate that someone posted the memorial

@DavidW Obviously we need more story-IDs being asked.

Congratulations @FuzzyBoots on reaching the top 3 users by reputation! This is a massive milestone not only for Fuzzy but also for the entire site, as the top 3 has been the same set of people for a whopping 9 years ...

@b_jonas I'm editing to align with our site policy. If a question pops up that is tagged with an author tag incorrectly, I'll remove it and replace it with a more applicable tag (if possible). I'm not sure why it's an issue, really. The questions are about the novels and not the authors, and so the tag should be for what the question is about not just what it contains.
Jul 8, 2024 17:54
@b_jonas Author tags are used for questions about the author not their works.

PSA: the SE network is currently experiencing a surge of AI-generated answers. If you see something that looks at first glance like an answer but to a knowledgeable eye is clearly nonsense, feel free to mod-flag it. I'm hoping this won't hit SFF significantly, but apparently it's already been seen on Worldbuilding, so it's not only on tech sites and getting closer to our neck of the woods.

@DavidW That feeling of anticlimax when you see 5 new questions posted, and they are: manga, manwha, isekai, manga, webtoon

oh hey, I no longer have the longest ID question on Sci Fi. scifi.stackexchange.com/q/194676/4918 and scifi.stackexchange.com/q/265306/4918 are longer (by source size). Note that the former question is older than mine, but it started out a reasonable size and got edited later to make it long.

@fez did the main character have powers and spiky black hair? could he summon monsters? did he have to defeat a big bad?

Congratulations @FuzzyBoots on 200,000 reputation! That's a huge milestone. You're the 4th person on SFF to get there, after the giants who've been our top 3 users since 2014.

But "enter image description here" is worse. It's longer and it only tells the user that there's something there that nobody's telling them about

Q: Short story with a strange house/mirrored rooms

PatrickMy girlfriend reminded me of a short story I read and am trying to track down but having no luck. Unfortunate person finds themselves lost and wandering and ends up en...

We're waiting for a CM to answer that meta post. In the meantime, let me apologise to those who lost significant rep through no fault of their own, and reassure everyone worrying about the meaning of "serial voting" that, if you haven't received a mod message, you're not suspected of any inappropriate behaviour. It's one of those unfortunate cases where a lot of people who did nothing wrong are suffering negative consequences (i.e. rep loss).

All that said, in this modern era of streaming I haven't bothered trying to track down most of the current stuff. I'm not going to sign up for a streaming service just to watch a single new show.

My issue with buying books isn't so much the expense of it, my problem is where to put them all. :) I have several cubic metres of books in storage, and that's not convenient.

data.stackexchange.com says that out of our 22294 story-id questions (non-deleted, as of when the dump for data was made), only 63% were originally tagged story-identification.
