Q: High school manhwa featuring an unlucky boy with black hair and his red-haired friend; after gaining strange powers, they fight each other

user173987It's about a boy who is unlucky. He has black hair. He also has a friend who has red hair and (I think) a yellow bandana or something on. It's a high school manhwa/webtoon/manhua. After a good number of chapters, they have some strange powers, and the friends fight. On the fighting day, the atmos...

Q: How did the elves learn to fight in Valinor?

AllureThere's supposed to be no evil in Valinor (at least, not since Melkor left it). Given that, there's presumably no need for elves to learn to fight. They can spend all their time on the poetry, music, and dance that they so enjoy. But if this were the case, then the Battle under the Stars would ne...

@DavidW hahaha :P I just think it's interesting (for lack of a better word) to see what question attracts certain votes - up/down/close/reopen/etc.. Sometimes the reason is clear, sometimes not, and it's fun learning :)

Q: Futuristic/dystopian novel for teens where people live in bubble-shaped/spherical houses

Berto70Years ago I read a dystopian/futuristic novel but I cannot find it anywhere and I don't remember much about it. Main character: a boy, maybe a teenager; Setting: dystopian world (maybe France, but I'm not sure about it) where society is split in 3+ classes/strata. People live in bubble-shaped/sp...

@Marvin hmm, maybe they hunted large game with their bare hands, and they haven't invented bows yet?
though presumably there'd be more elves dead in accidents earlier

Q: What exactly did Jet do wrong?

BCLCIn ATLA S01E10 entitled 'Jet' that introduced the episode title character Jet, Jet wanted to blow up a damn to flood a certain village to get rid of the fire nation soldiers there or something. (To me, the Netflix version of Jet makes sense, so my head canon currently is to replace the original J...

Q: Why not BOTH destroy the dam & evacuate the people?

BCLCIn ATLA S01E10 entitled 'Jet' that introduced the episode title character Jet, Jet wanted to blow up a damn to flood a certain village to get rid of the fire nation soldiers there or something. Or at least free the village. Sokka wasn't able to prevent this, but Sokka did evacuate the villagers. ...

You know you're a Tolkien geek when "Cuiviénen", accent and all, appears in your phone's predictive text.

I don't exactly understand why closed chatrooms that have been inactive for 3 years still appear in the list.

@b_jonas in defence of the questioner, they did have "around 10 years ago" further down :)
And yet another question with votes to close, when previously questions with even fewer details were vehemently kept open (and subsequently answered in fact!)
12:48
@fez I fixed the other dupe so they should now all point at the new target; if you don't mind checking I got it right, I'd appreciate it.
@fez Leaning on my gold badge a bit, I'll vote to close if the details that are there are too generic or tropey. Basically, if "spherical houses" brings more than a couple of possibilities to mind and there isn't really anything else non-generic there, I'll vote to close.
And in the other direction, I'm much more likely to vote to leave open on those, since a particular combination, even of fairly generic elements, can be uncommon and thus likely to lead to a reasonably unique identification (if only someone can think of it).
They're judgment calls: How many stories combined X and Y in the 1970? Not many. How many stories had Z by the mid 2010s? Quite a few.

@DavidW Cheers for that! Looks like they're all pointing to the right one :)
@DavidW Yeah I guess the tropey-ness and when the thing was read/watched does make quite a difference when it comes to uniqueness... it's tough to find a concrete "if X then Y" mindset (at least for me)
@DavidW it does say "society is split in 3+ classes/strata" and "novel for teens". I think that adds enough details to the spherical houses that it can be resolved, so I'd leave it open.
on the other hand, I wonder if scifi.stackexchange.com/q/286790/4918 is enough detail or if the anime folks will just list twenty anime series that match

The amount of anime (animes?) where the main character is reincarnated into a royal house but they are disliked and mistreated is TOO DAMN HIGH

arushiDoes anybody know the title of a Sci-Fi novel where explorers from Earth visited 3 planets? I remember that these planets were occupied by certain groups of people and evolved over the years. @b_jonas and the female lead had pink hair. And there's an amulet in the mix, somewhere

Q: Was the Matrix always set in 1999?

MatristaticalizedIn the first movie it says the simulated world is 1999. The obvious question is, how do people grow up in it? If they're born and age, it would seem logical that it spans across multiple years. Is everyone the same age forever? Can the matrix world expand beyond 1999, but without advancing techno...

Q: Explorers on Mars in danger. They enter a martian settlement to ask for help. Later discover they were teleported miles to safety and never noticed

Judith JonesThis might be tricky. I think it was part of a novel I read in the eighties. The only detail that sticks in my head is them entering a Martian settlement and asking for help to get home. They then leave a different Martian settlement, a great distance away. It takes them sometime to realise this ...
