Q: Why do Jedi and Sith say "destroy" instead of "kill"?

ApproachingDarknessFishIn Return of the Jedi, Luke says to Vader: That was why you couldn't destroy me. That's why you won't take me to your emperor now. Later, the Emperor says to Luke: If you will not be turned, you will be destroyed. And in The Phantom Menace, Made Windu says with regard to the apparent death of...

Q: Portals Tv show or miniseries from Netflix

WillThis has been bugging me for a while, but I distinctly remember the existence of a show I watched on Netflix when I was a lot younger. Before 2015 at least. I only remember a few random things that could be wrong. It involved portals of some kind, there was one female character that I couldn’t te...

Q: Did the Bene Gesserit try to follow the Golden path after the death of the god-emperor?

Kinzle B Only the Bene Gesserit perceive the Golden Path and are therefore faced with a choice: keep to their traditional role of hidden manipulators who quietly ease tensions and guide human progress while struggling for their own survival, or embrace the Golden Path and push humanity onward into a new ...

Q: Symbiotic species hiding in a 'spaceship zoo'

MichaelI'm trying to track down the title of a short story I read at least twenty years ago, probably nearer 30 and may not have been new at the time. Almost certainly in an anthology. The starting premise is a human crew stranded in space and with some sort of time constraint - it may have been specifi...

@Marvin This Leiber pronunciation HNQ could make for a good Tour question. Two short sweet answers which are enough to resolve the question satisfactorily and wouldn't be much improved by long passages of quoted text or lots of fancy formatting.

Q: Story ID: Group of boys vanish descending lighthouse stairs

GotCarterI think this was a short story, part of a collection of ghost stories or the like, read in English around the early 90s. Not sure about publication date. A group of boys (maybe from a school or a scout troop) are spending the night at the top of an old lighthouse (could be some other tall buildi...

@Marvin "Ton of electives" is a bit of an exaggeration when they only had five subjects, you had to take two of them, and I think there were only two valid combinations (involving three subjects) that you could actually take without using a time-turner, so one of the suppsed electives is actually mandatory. Or something like that. I'll have to check the book for how the schedules actually work.
We already have a question about this: scifi.stackexchange.com/q/117546/4918 "Why did nobody else need a Time Turner?"
That said, I'm more bothered by the teacher's side of the timetable business where some of the professors seem to be impossibly overworked, with Professor McGonagall probably teaching classes like 80 hours a week.

Q: Short story, aliens and humans become part of a symbiotic space ship

Ali WI’m trying to find a short story I must have read in the 90’s in a collection. Plot is; A biological spaceship travels around the galaxy collecting creatures that are added to to itself as parts of its symbiotic collective. Each alien turns out to have a specific function in the ship, that become...

@Marvin That sounds very familiar.
@b_jonas That falls under "bad JKR maths" - don't think too much about it.
@Marvin And it's already identified.
And a probable duplicate.

Q: Name of this Alien horror movie

user146173I'm looking for the name of and alien horror movie where children are probed by aliens and then the aliens come back for them as adults. I think the probes are used to locate the children when they become adults. I think the movie is from the early 2000s but I'm not sure.

Q: Is there any way to make sense out of the scheduling for electives at Hogwarts?

AlexThe Question The actual question is as follows: The scheduling system for elective classes at Hogwarts, as presented in the books (particularly Prisoner of Azkaban) does not seem to make sense. I am seeking an explanation as to how it can actually make sense. The rest of this post will consist of...

@Alex Wow. Did I just inspire you to research all that?
No I didn't, that's two years old.
I just didn't find it for some reason when I looked,
I only found scifi.stackexchange.com/q/117546/4918 . Thanks for the pointer.
I'll have to read that later.
Warning: it’s long and dull. As is the self-answer I posted.
