@Hame I think the people at the programmers.SE are more knowledgeable about this. Maybe you ask there. For my part, I learned this the hard way and don't know of any books that cover it. I found the ru.j-npcs.org/usoft/WWW/LJ/Articles/unixtenets.html to be very useful in general but this is not exactly what you are looking for.
Ahah :). Use case: "girlfriend: -I feel lost. answer: - Oh really?". Typical time needed from me to answer: 0,001s+typing time. Typical time I should wait before answering to achieve desired effect: 20 minutes.

Are software identification questions on-topic?
I.e., questions where the OP is not looking for options/alternatives, but for a specific software. In the usual case, such questions would only have one correct answer.
