Some years ago I had a friend who was interested in TRPGs about systems (plurality, multiplicity) but I can't remember who. Anybody still here: are you that person/do you remember who it was?

[wave] I'm putting together a compilation of my GMing tips and table culture recommendations. Anybody who's been around here long enough, is there advice I've given on the subject that stood out to you as worth memorializing?

An update to my earlier message about D&D Beyond's planned changes - they've decided to reverse course with their initial plan regarding spells/magic items. See the update here.

Q: D&D 5e 2024 Guidance FAQ

Thomas MarkovWith the release of a new edition to the most popular tabletop RPG in the world, we can expect to encounter new users, new questions, and new challenges on the site. However, we've been here before and we have matured as a site in the last 13 years, so we have enough experience to anticipate some...

This may be an interesting case study for us. A network staff member’s first interaction with our site being to post an off topic question could tell us something useful about our new user onboarding. Sofistication, can you give some feedback into what site-specific introduction material (e.g. tour, help center articles) you read before posting this question? If any of these materials led you to believe this sort of game recommendation was on topic, then there’s definitely some room for improvement in how we’re explaining the site’s scope. — Thomas Markov 39 secs ago

@Xirema Sigh.*D&D has never been an economics simulator - the game engine wasn't and isn't built for that. Gold Pieces are a way to keep score (or were) and then became a way to get stuff that wasn't via adventuring. The point made earlier was that "XXXX GP" for a gem is an indication of quality ... in easy to understand game points terms. (Hence my comparison to the Hope Diamond)

@Disdyakistriacontahedron My humble suggestion is if everyone is inexperienced then start using the base classes and features, without digging into homebrew

Obligatory reminder: artificial intelligence isn't actually, you know, intelligent. It's just reviewed a large body of work and compiled it into fancy graphs of what words get associated with what other words and doing probability calculations to figure out which ones to put together in what order. The job of every current AI is not to actually understand what it's saying, instead just produce output that is highly plausible to a viewer.

@NobodytheHobgoblin You can ignore the "user" who posts those, which hides it when you're in the room. (It's the only way I've been able to make some chats tolerable lol)

“Yesterday, I received the full text of the OGL 1.1 from a reputable source. The updated Open Gaming License is incredibly restrictive, demands community surveillance and, most importantly, renders the previous WotC OGL an unauthorized agreement.” — Linda Codega on twitter; Gizmodo article

Idea for a character: a Divination school Wizard who specialises in tasseography. Calls himself a coffeemancer using the original meaning of -mancer - type of prediction magic. Gets annoyed if people expect him to control coffee or even make it ("I'm not a bartender!").

We are also MUCH more than D&D and 5e. It's not so much tension between systems, it's that systems have different rules and we can't really bring other systems into answers unless we are answering subjectively and can explain how they were incorporated.

It’s just frustrating to see “just follow the fundamental design of 5e” sent to the top of a system-agnostic question.

@Drakethedragon I love the enthusiasm, but you're trying to dig without a shovel. Without understanding the rules and the system, trying to homebrew something is going to be next to impossible - nevermind getting it ok'd by your DM.

Minorities and marginalised groups (such as sign language users) are often included in media or pop culture in a way that reduces them to a token, stereotype or humorous entertainment. I don't want to contribute to that culture. Therefore when I want to include something that I don't know a lot about I want to learn how to do it respectfully.

@NautArch-is-skeptical-about-SE Oh, right. No. Idea generation is very specifically shorthand for the bad subjective criteria, which manifest a lot in the form of idea generation: “what are some ways I can do {thing}?”
