Q: How to delete backlog in SharePlex

user2266357Is there a way to to delete the backlog in SharePlex? I have the queue shut down but there is still a backlog. I googled and read SharePlex admin guide, and all I could find is that the delete queue command will fail if there is a backlog.

cv plz

Q: how to create view with variables inside?

Jeroeni have some code here but first i want to explane my question. i want to create a view but thats not possible in a view because my SELECT statement hase some variables in it i have seen some answers with function but i dont know how the parameters works. here is my code CODE: DECLARE @totalR...

or can anyone salvage it?

@gbn looks unsalvageable
OP only said: I want this code made to work. I don't understand the real problem..

@Marian thanks, thought so.

I just found a use case for implicit cross-joins as much as it pains me to say so :-P

@ChrisTravers Please share.

@MikaelEriksson you deserve some recognition. You've salvaged way too many XML questions. Hopefully you won't mind this:

Q: How to shred .docx XML?

user23683I am trying to import a xml (actually a docx file) to a sql server 2008 database. I am almost a novice in XML programming. I googled a lot but almost all the examples there are with simple xml file. Here the xml file is little complex(please see below). Can you please give me some idea how I shou...

gbn: so I have db-specific rolenames for group permission management
so a name may loop like (for a db named mtech14:
lsmb_mtech14__gl_reports
and so I have functions that manage these and handle grants so I don't need to know the role prefix
so a call like this is easy to read and format:
SELECT lsmb__grant_perms('orders_generate', obj, ptype)
FROM unnest(array['oe'::text, 'orderitems', 'business_unit_oitem']) obj,
unnest(array['SELECT'::text, 'INSERT', 'UPDATE']);

gbn
And if you replace , with CROSS JOIN?

(this would generate and run six grant statements against a total of three tables, giving permission to a prefixed rolename)

gbn
8:21 AM
makes it explicit at least

If I replace with a CROSS JOIN then I need a lot more whitespace on the left to make it readable
let me see if I can find a better place to format it one sec

@MikaelEriksson we have to wait for another 24 hours, though :).

I think it is easier to read without the cross join unless I start doing a lot more left padding of whitespace

gbn
@ChrisTravers is whitespace a problem?

@gbn we try to keep lines to 80 chars if possible

gbn
8:24 AM
SELECT
     lsmb__grant_perms('sales_quotation_create', obj, ptype)
FROM
     unnest(array['orderitems'::text, 'business_unit_oitem']) obj
     CROSS JOIN
     unnest(array['INSERT'::text, 'UPDATE']) ptype;
I guess this is verboten

yeah that would work too.

gbn
@ChrisTravers Using VMS? :)

Might go that route. It is just one of those cases of products of lists which is an unusual case...
nah, but end up doing a lot of work via ssh on terminals that get grumpy when resized
and it keeps other developers happy when they don't have to resize also

gbn
@ChrisTravers and it offends your OCD (we all have it to some degree in IT). I hate it when I can't fit something into my usual pattern or style.
Spoils my whole day

yeah, we already have a reputation for strange SQL styles with our indentation approach
Well, such a reputation among app developers, not among db folks interestingly
Here's an example of that:
I think app developers who don't stare at a lot of SQL code think we are obsessive about lining things up :-P

8:31 AM
@ChrisTravers using any beautifier app?

nope, that's just how we code :-P

@ChrisTravers by hand?! :O

yep
takes a little practice but pretty quickly you know how many spaces to start forward if you want a left join
One of the co-developers got us into it actually and we've actually really liked it

@ChrisTravers true, but I would've preferred just a an automatic way to write that. RedGate's SQL Prompt was good, in the past.

hmmm may want to look into it

8:36 AM
@ChrisTravers it was customizable, pretty nice, but haven't checked it for the last versions. Give it a try, though.

I think I will

@ChrisTravers oh, wait. You're a PG dev. It works only for Management Studio and Visual Studio (MS stuff).

hmmm (and I mostly do my development in VIM...)

@ChrisTravers oh, sorry then. Doesn't match your needs.

@ChrisTravers for that same reason I loved Python for side scripting

@Marian Yeah, there's something to that.

it doesn't have parens, it has white space separation. It just looks proper.

8:43 AM
Python's a nice language. Now, if PL/Python were more full-featuerd in PGSQL....
*featured
I would love to be able to use Python to do db-side scripting too

@ChrisTravers I unfortunately use it only for my pleasure now (rarely). Company is using Powershell and pushing it everywhere. And when I watch at all the $$$$ there I won't think of programming :-).

yeah. You mostly work with SQL Server?

@ChrisTravers Only SQL Server. Worked (a bit) with Oracle and MySQL in the past, but nothing too important. Just simple development tasks.
@ChrisTravers but fortunately MS SQL is a huge platform. We have SQL Server (the OLTP engine), SSAS (the cube engine), SSRS (reporting engine), SSIS (ETL engine).
so you can spend a lifetime there.. :)

Q: In SQL Server 2000 or greater is their a system primary key associated with each row

Cyber Slueth OmegaDoes a system primary key or unique identifier for each row in a table exist? Like @@ROWID, @@IDENTIFER, or some other identifier that uniquely identifies each row regardless of how it was created. Using SQL Server 2000 through SQL Server 2012.

@Marian Plus at least in theory you can extend the language to a large degree using not only tsql but anything that the clr will run, right?

@gbn and there's more to it: the 2012 with all additions, PDW (for immortals), StreamInsight (looks interesting)
@ChrisTravers CLR is pretty useful, but haven't seen many devs liking it too much. They still prefer to write .NET for the app code and SQL or some ORM code for the db stuff.
at least in my past projects
@gbn yep

@Marian I am still convinced that many devs don't "get" what a database can really do.

Q: CTE memory space

NateHow do CTE memory space work? When you have complex SQL statements executing with the CTE and you get unusually large result set, can it increase the logical reads of the query? I have a CTE that is executing 32 trillion reads, and other times it runs with 200K

32 trillion reads?!
and @Chris is complaining of a thousand lines :)

10:19 AM
@Marian yeah, that seems like a lot. What kind of server manages that?
(to be fair, the file I am rewriting is probably 800 separate queries, not a single 1000 line query)
and the old version doesn't run transactionally
the new version will

10:46 AM
@ChrisTravers That is very strange/odd/not easy to read :/

@MarkStorey-Smith they are aligned per table name and column name

Yes, very odd

you can see the backbone in there
from DBA reactions

11:08 AM
@MarkStorey-Smith The idea is to align things so that vertically skimming the query is much more efficient.
(quickly find join block, clauses, etc)

@ChrisTravers Style is a personal thing I guess. That one definitely isn't working for me.
@ChrisTravers My version of your query (which you're going to hate) would look more like this. Line spacing in pastebin makes it look a bit odd.

@MarkStorey-Smith with comma in front of the line? it is practical, but boy it's ugly :)

@Marian Hahaha, that CTE question is from one of my clients. I made him post it in public rather than me answering it via email. Told him I'd tweet it if it didn't have good answers by Monday.

@gbn thought of you when I met someone whose family lives in Malta last night
@BrentOzar We appreciate you sending them to us :)

@MarkStorey-Smith I think part of it is that over time we get used to some patterns and figure out how to make them work best :-)
1100 lines of new SQL code written, tested, and debugged today. :-D Not too bad....

@JNK I'm curious if it can be some bug, though. 32 trillion sounds more of a Cartesian product than some normal behaviour.

JNK
@Marian if it's a recursive CTE it's easily possible
You can have 100 iterations of a CTE
if its self-referencing and reads itself each time, and the original query does say 2 scans, in 100 iterations you have 1,267,650,600,228,229,401,496,703,205,376 scans
if it's really poorly written it's possible

@JNK good, so it's a bug :P

A: How to reduce network latency during mirroring?

MarianFor a weak network I wouldn't personally use Mirroring. But if you really want mirroring for the specific case when there might be a slow connection an option would be to use the Asynchronous mode (or High Performance mode). This would imply some data loss would be possible, but Details on MSDN:...

can you reconfigure mirroring without breaking it?

@Marian my terrible CTE is running still, it's an awful beast

The title on the new question is wrong, too. You can disable SQL auth on SQL Server, but you can't disable Windows auth. So it's the sa account he needs to recover access to, not re-enable Windows auth

I think it is because of the comment that @JackDouglas edited into the mod pages but the layout is now broken on mobile devices, at least on an iphone it is

2:02 PM
@bluefeet funny, this morning I was on my iPhone and with the mobile interface I couldn't figure out how to get to the election page (I'm far too lazy to memorize a URL). So I switched to the full site. Is that the layout that is broken?

JNK
@AaronBertrand the url is dba.stackexchange.com/election

@bluefeet oops

@AaronBertrand there is no mobile layout for election pages it defaults to the full site but it is broken

you remember what site it was on and that it was for the election right? ;)

@JackDouglas you are just a troublemaker

A: Please can we have markdown tables on dba.se

Anna LearAt this point we have no plans to extend Markdown syntax to support tables. The extension itself isn't the hard part. The display of tables in posts would be fairly hard to get right. There are a few extensions already (like what PHP Markdown does), but the syntax isn't very intuitive, and it's ...

for those who can't run the script ^^^^^

Thank you for adding the screen shot because - while in many aspects I consider myself quite technical - I have absolutely no idea how to use your script. The result is prettier, but I'm not sure it's worth the additional work required over formatting in other existing methods (there is some ascii table prettifier that people use, but I just use SSMS and region editing to inject the right spacing efficiently).

@AaronBertrand the idea is mainly that we could cut'n'paste from SQLFiddle's markdown output and get pretty tables for free, rather than hand formatting

2:19 PM
@JackDouglas yeah I get that, I'm just saying for me 99% of the time if I'm pasting tabular output it's from Management Studio grid results, not SQLfiddle.
So using SQLfiddle will, in most cases, add additional steps to my process.

@AaronBertrand ah yes, but you can just keep on doing that :)
that looks nice, too, this is just a bit of icing on the cake, and SQLFiddle is used a lot, and increasingly, in answers here

@Tanner yes, thanks

@Marian thanks
@AaronBertrand man. that's hardcore when Itzik gets a "closed won't fix"

@swasheck it never ceases to amaze me some of the things they close.

That response is getting pretty common no matter who the submitter is. In a lot of cases it seems to simply be a "will this sell more licenses?" question. If no, closed.

I can't log on to there. Or I would vote.

2:49 PM
i get it ... they said based on higher priorities

@Zane does your work block Connect too? Egads

@AaronBertrand only the log in screen.

@swasheck which could be stated more eloquently with "based on $$$"
@Zane do you work for Draconians Inc.?

Hey. If between me and @swasheck we have one fully functioning internet.

@Zane does one of you get imgur?

2:51 PM
@Zane don't feel bad my work blocks a bunch of stuff too

@AaronBertrand is this because of the current focus on R&D/new features? is that a way to positively view this? or is it really just as Andreessen said ... we're in the dark ages of tech

In case you didn't see it, I posted a blog entry this morning on ad hoc vs. procedures

@swasheck I'm finally on pg 9.2, please share my joy :)

@JackDouglas shared. did you compile from source?

@swasheck who knows? They don't share their motivations, they just leave us to wonder.

2:52 PM
@swasheck ha ha, no, used the official pg repo for Debian

@djechlin but to be relevant here that would require a comment and a down-vote. They're not always hand-in-hand - many down-voters don't comment, either because of retribution paranoia or because someone else already made an accurate comment about the problem. I would like to have some easy way to review modifications made to posts I've down-voted regardless of whether I've commented and regardless of whether the OP has bothered to click some forthcoming "I've resolved this comment" button. — Aaron Bertrand 7 mins ago
