Q: Postgres error on Heroku causing ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid

ChristofferI run a Rails app / website (Rails v.3.0.3) with some 10.000 pageviews a day but sometimes, when Digg.com or similar links to it, I get 2 or 3 times that traffic. @ChrisTravers shouldn't we first revive that question?

7:26 AM
@swasheck Although I don't normally admit it in polite company, I did actually work as a DBA (devops work for a big J2EE project) for a while when I was still in NZ.
@swasheck I have a certain amount of respect for Cyndi Lauper. Anyone who can get a song about masturbating onto the charts in 1983 is doing something right.

@dezso it's not closed. You mean answer it there first?

8:03 AM
@SimonRigharts Try looking up the lyrics for 'She Bop'. Read it with a dirty - english - mind. Spot the metaphors.

Anyone else using deer antler spray to improve database performance?

60% of the time it works. Every time.

@ChrisTravers no, the last activity was on Apr 16

I hope they ban performance enhancing drugs in code golf too.

@CadeRoux weren't you in Amsterdam yesterday?

@dezso So maybe some comments suggesting the move?

9:24 AM
@Marian Still here.
@Marian Fly back tomorrow morning

@CadeRoux have you been to the final of European Football Cup?
it was yesterday evening in Amsterdam Arena :)
@Mark's "favorites" won

9:36 AM
@Marian We did not go to the match, and we didn't quite manage to dodge all the partiers.

@CadeRoux I see, so then you had some good time I hope

@Marian Plenty of La Chouffe beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/321/1836

@CadeRoux Ah, belgian beer! the only thing I loved in that country :)

@ChrisTravers tried to ping him by an 'any advance?' comment :)
@Marian in the Netherlands? How about cheese?

@Marian Hopefully all the obnoxious Chelsea fans will be gone tonight. They were pretty unruly on the flight from Liverpool as well.

9:48 AM
@dezso no, Netherlands was fine, just Belgium was boring. But their beer is great.

But hey, what about that Eurovision Semi-Final #1? The suspense. The costumes. The tight leather pants!

@CadeRoux well, at least you won't get much sleep in the plane.

@CadeRoux is there such a thing?

@Marian They won't be going to Houston in that manner - by about the second fuck this fuck that, break Benfica's fucking neck etc, I expect they'll be face down in the aisle with an air marshall's knee in their back.

@CadeRoux yeah, American police is no fun.

@Marian Colleague's flight from Amsterdam to meet us in Liverpool Sunday night was delayed for 20 minutes as a passenger was verbally abusing a flight attendant as she started the safety instruction. The plane taxied back to gate, and police took off the passenger.

@CadeRoux I guess he wasn't too sobre. Also not too smart either :).

@Marian Scouser, probably.

@Marian I know, one was mine. But I'm not sure. I guess if you add one, it will be closed as off-topic.

@ypercube ok, thanks. I did that, now a mod pls forward it to SU.

@MikaelEriksson I doubt it will
there's also nothing suspicious in your vote activity that I can see

12:33 PM
The only time I had upvoting reverted was when someone (after a few beers) had voted 15-20 answers.
It was a nice feeling but lasted only a day.

JNK
@dezso @Marian @ypercube if there is an OT question that belongs on another site just flag it
We can migrate it, if you VTC as off-topic we have to reopen and reclose again

@JNK We have closed it and flagged it.

JNK
yeah I got the flag and moved it
im saying for a migration you can just flag
since I will have to open it again to migrate it if you close it

@JNK hey how hard would it be to get our list of target sites expanded beyond just our own meta? I would think we should have the three main sites as migration options.

JNK
it's not WRONG to vtc, I'm just telling you
@AaronBertrand not sure TBH
for our site the benefit will be marginal since it's not like a flag will sit for more than a couple hours

12:45 PM
...and maybe the main meta in the case where someone asks something that is meta but honestly isn't specific to this site

JNK
average flag time for us is 3 hours this month
and that skews up on some that we leave in place while the OP fixes stuff

@JNK true, I'm not suggesting it to make migrations happen quicker, just to give users some voice to where it belongs (and make you mods have to think less or respond to requests in here about where to send something)

JNK
I mean it's a good idea
I'm not sure how big of a change it would be though, I think there is some SO code that's unique to SO
and the SE codebase I think is pretty standardized

Yeah and I bet the moderators of the target sites don't want it to be any easier for us to send their crap back to them :-)

@JNK Roger. Didn't know that

JNK
12:48 PM
they don't mind at this point
they added a functionality a while back to easily reject migrations
we used to check with the target site before sending, now we just fire away

@AaronBertrand Agree

@AaronBertrand I agree

Tough to guess because the timeline is so tight on a new question, and you never know who is going to down-vote who for what, but I think that would be a pretty well-educated guess in this case.

I suspect some folks are sly--make minor edits in their Qs to keep them on the main page.

This topic comes up all the time on meta.SO, I haven't seen a good suggestion other than not making edit bumps abuse the front page

JNK
some of them are super annoying
i.e. someone posts a bad answer, it gets deleted, but the bump stays in place

Hey is @MikaelEriksson still around? If I have xmlcolumn.query('count(//something)') how do I convert that to an INT?

Well, eager members can just read the questions which are out of main page just following tags.

JNK
oo oo @AaronBertrand I can do that

If I try the usual suspects I get Msg 529 explicit conversion from xml to int is not allowed
@JNK fantastic, show me! You probably owe me a few. :-)

whats the limit to the number of columns a table can have in it in sql server?

@JNK No it doesn't. Does it?

JNK
@ypercube yes

I thought a new bump happens, because of the delete.

@JNK my observation is if a question gets deleted when you load the main page you see it for a brief instant but then it gets hidden
Oh sorry, question, not answer. <duh>

JNK
2:12 PM
@AaronBertrand so you want a count of nodes?

Well I'm already getting a count, but the output is XML

Developer here, needing DBA sanity check:

I have a SQL dev, suggesting we start using the warehouse(fed by multiple applications) directly in our front end applications.

I am very hesitant to do this because of the dependency chain it creates.
APP -> ETL -> Warehouse -> APP

Is this common? To me it feels unsafe

JNK
@AaronBertrand SELECT xmlcolumn.value('count(//something)', 'int') should do it
works for me in testing
declare @x xml = '<r><a>1</a><a>2</a></r>'

SELECT @x.value('count(//a)', 'int')
returns 2 as an int

2:15 PM
But I'm doing a search, e.g. .query, not .value

you may need to fiddle it for an example then

@FreshPrinceOfSO you just stay inside. A/C is your friend in Phoenix

JNK
@bluefeet Amy's Baking Company

2:31 PM
@bluefeet is it true there are misters everywhere?

@FreshPrinceOfSO Not every where but most restaurants have them for the patios. A lot of people have them on their home patios/pools. Outside shopping areas typically have them.
I hate misters
@JNK I wish I saw that.

JNK
@bluefeet its available online I think
I got it on instant watch
er on-demand
the buzzfeed article has the facebook meltdown

I'll check it out

@bluefeet that's just crazy. we have heaters for patios

@JNK here is a simplified query:
SELECT Scans = p.query_plan.query('count(//RelOp[@LogicalOp = ''Index Scan'']/*/Object[@Index=''[IX_name]''])')
FROM sys.dm_exec_cached_plans pl
CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_query_plan(pl.plan_handle) AS p
WHERE p.[dbid] = DB_ID();
This outputs a column called Scans with a bunch of zeros. But the data type is XML (in grid mode notice the 0 is clickable).

2:39 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO we do to during the winter

Of course you might want to use an IX_name that makes sense in your environ.

@bluefeet winter? is there such a thing there?

JNK
@AaronBertrand testing now

Try Flagstaff. Elevation can be a funny thing.

@AaronBertrand we flew over that
looked pleasant from 36000 feet

2:41 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO yes, in the winter we actually get down in the 20-30's at night.
We had snow this year in Phoenix

@bluefeet that's nuts

JNK
the desert has low humidity so temps are variable
@AaronBertrand value works there

@JNK sometimes.

JNK
SELECT Scans = p.query_plan.value('count(//RelOp[@LogicalOp = ''Index Scan'']/*/Object[@Index=''[IX_name]''])', 'int')
FROM sys.dm_exec_cached_plans pl
CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_query_plan(pl.plan_handle) AS p
WHERE p.[dbid] = DB_ID();
it returns a column of ints for me

gbn
Am I being grumpy and intolerant?

2:43 PM
The humidity is all relative compared to other places. But during monsoon season we have high humidity, it's not a dry heat during that time

@bluefeet monsoon season?!

@bluefeet drives it all the way up to 13%?

@FreshPrinceOfSO yes, during the summer we get big storms early-mid afternoon they are monsoons. We get haboobs or dust storms that are massive and then rain for about an hour and its gone

@gbn Useless MSS fact <-- Works with databases, was born on halloween

@gbn no. i mean ... maybe ... but that's ok

2:45 PM
@swasheck we get into the 40's and higher but with 110+ weather it's disgusting

If only there was something on the Internet about this — swasheck 2 mins ago
apparently @gbn and I have a case of the thursdays

@JNK ok, I wasn't sure if changing to .value would alter the semantics used in .query. The problem is I'm getting all 0s so I don't know if the results are still right - need to find an index that shows > 0 to be sure. :-)

@bluefeet checking it out

@gbn It is similar but is this a Halloween problem? I mean, for Halloween, I thought it means that you get (more than one) updates when you don't expect them. In the OP, isn't sure that he will get more than one updates?

gbn
2:48 PM
@swasheck I am grumpy today. Mardy even in Brit English. My manflu is dragging on

JNK
@AaronBertrand im checking that for you now too
I just forced an index scan on mine

@gbn bum deal. those things suck

@gbn Snap. Manflu and me do not agree

@billinkc oh, my! That is one interesting Data Flow. Abomination indeed!

gbn
@ypercube Strictly, it isn't. But in practice it is "an earlier update causes the same row to be updated later". But dunno what the effect is called.

JNK
2:49 PM
ah mine is a CLUSTERED INDEX SCAN

Though I have progressed from the free running snotty stage to clogged up, dull headed, 'orrible noise making stage

@billinkc have you seen who's answering there? :) did you ping him?
@MarkStorey-Smith sorry to hear, Mark. Anything beer can't fix?

@Marian I saw Matt tweet about it this morning and was busting his chops for muscling in on "my" tag

@Marian Scotch for colds!

@MarkStorey-Smith make it a double ... neat

2:52 PM
@JNK You can change the LogicalOp literal (or add a second using OR)

@MarkStorey-Smith good, you have my blessing! :) Proceed!
@billinkc now if we can invite him here.. maybe we can invent some difficult SSIS problems :)

@JNK but note that this shows the count of operations that are indicated in the plan that's cached, not the number of scans that have occurred against the index
@MarkStorey-Smith so YOU are the halloween problem
2

@AaronBertrand One does try

@bluefeet are you as surprised as I am that people don't know about the weather patterns that happen in your area?

@AaronBertrand Here now. You got it solved or...?

@Zane nope. Most people think it is hot and dry here all the time.

gbn
@ypercube Mind you, it's possible without physical data movements support.microsoft.com/kb/285870

Hmm.
@bluefeet I suppose I've had people ask me if we have spring in minnesota.

@Zane people assume that denver is a ski resort that always has snow on the ground

@swasheck It isn't?

is the part about TRUNCATE and ROLLBACK true here?
1
A: DELETE vs TRUNCATE (Oracle)

Blake MurrayNote: Deletes perform normal DML. That is, they take locks on rows, they generate redo (lots of it), and they require segments in the UNDO tablespace. Deletes clear records out of blocks carefully. If a mistake is made a rollback can be issued to restore the records prior to a commit. A delete do...

@billinkc That probably explains why Coors and Coors Light tastes like horse piss

3:14 PM
@dezso You can't roll a truncate back in Oracle

gbn
@dezso I wonder too. It can be rolled back in SQL Server 2000+ if you have FUll recovery

Though if you have FLASHBACK DATABASE setup you can recover the DB to a previous SCN and get the data, but it requires a database bounce

JNK
@AaronBertrand I think your issue is the namespace
yeah
OK so you need to add this before your query:
;WITH xmlnamespaces (N'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/07/showplan' as sp)
then in your xpath, use sp:RelOp
basically we need to alias that namespace and make sure the relop element we are looking for uses it, because the showplan root element in the xml has that as the default namespace

I have the namespace, just omitted it for brevity

JNK
oh ok
well it works for me with the namespace on a query plan i created to use that index

3:23 PM
But you're saying count(//sp.RelOp instead of count(//RelOp ?

JNK
sp:RelOp
yes

Yep sorry typo

JNK
without the namespace prefix I get 0 rows
with it I get 1 as I should
now your turn!

Yep, same here, thanks

JNK
I am having a sql security issue
I have a trigger that runs a query against a synonym
it all gets called from within broker and runs as sa
I'm getting a doomed transaction error in my broker queue with The server principal 'sa' is not able to access the database XYZ under the current security context
all the trigger does is check that an inserted value exists in a table in XYZ database
sa is indeed the owner of database XYZ

3:27 PM
Weird, not sure on that one, sorry

JNK
ok ill post a Q

If you trace the exception you might capture that it is executing as a different user somewhere along the pipe.
@gbn In Simple too, as long as it hasn't been aged out of the log.
And actually that would be impossible if the transaction was still active <facepalm>

@bluefeet thats scary as hell

gbn
@AaronBertrand Not something I'd rely on ofc. Or even think of.

@gbn no of course not
@gbn just a popular myth

gbn
3:33 PM
@AaronBertrand Really? Not had to slap any myths out of folk for ages now

@gbn that a truncate is never recoverable? Yes.
@gbn or that a truncate is not logged at all? Yes.

gbn
@AaronBertrand oh yeah, knew that sorry. I had to argue that with "DB engineering" once who said truncate fucked recoverability

@FreshPrinceOfSO you get used to them

This is all SQL Server, of course. Obviously it can differ by RDBMS

@AaronBertrand There are others? MySQL ofc does not count. Oracle is an expensive spreadsheet. Sybase is SQL Server's hillbilly cousin

@gbn well people who focus on platform x will of course argue that they are a 1st class RDBMS
@gbn even Access people make that claim from time to time
"Look, I can set up related tables; I'm relational!"

@gbn Ok, I just want you to know, I had to tweet that comment.

my lead basically threw up his hands on this one
even though the thing causing the error is some crap he made me put in

@MikeFal I'm a pretty big fan of de-normalizing data when the shoe fits however this is probably not a good instance to do so if you're going out to 1000 columns.
That's going to be a mess.
