A: Why does my 64-bit system look for 32-bit repos?

gertvdijkConfusing, isn't it? Let me explain a bit. Why? 32-bit software runs fine on a 64-bit kernel with 64-bit capable hardware. Some software still relies on specific 32-bit libraries. This is not nice, but sometimes we don't have to power to change this. 32-bit software has to be available to the ...

@jrg don't know. I was hoping to provide some debugging stuff to try here:
This should never happen and is a bug. However, it might be related to your graphics drivers and/or compositing settings. What graphics card/driver are you using? (e.g. lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga) Update: looks like Freedesktop.org bug #58510gertvdijk 9 mins ago

@gertvdijk The user on that bug is using fglrx for his card, still seems very similar.

@BrunoPereira sorta, kinda.
@BrunoPereira they recommend java for the full suite, but it works fine without.

On the upside, at least this problem is hilarious. And we'll have it fixed soon. Unfortunately you'll have to wait until then to benefit from the great and powerful knowledge of Stack Exchange (unless you were going to ask if it's bad for exception handlers to throw unhandled exceptions)." :)

@EliahKagan i'd upvote a MSO page asking for that.

BBL

@jrg Actually it may be better, and more consistent with the general (intentional) humor of SE error pages, if it had: "We couldn't show you the page you wanted, but we do have this picture of a penguin dressed as Sean Connery. We also have a public service announcement: Whenever possible, your exception handlers should avoid throwing exceptions that might not be handled. When that happens, there's no graceful way out. By the way, that's why we're not able to serve up the page you ordered."

jrg
@EliahKagan isn't that the superuser one?

4:06 PM
@jrg I think it's a juxtaposition of the ones from two sites. (The image, I mean.)

seeing as its not particularly on-topic, thanks! :)

the first question is on topic

the second one is off-topic and just plain crazy.
@FEichinger that is worth a star

@iSeth Agreed. Flag as not constructive. Don't see it salvagable without reducing it to near-nothing.

@FEichinger add a comment saying something about only asking one question at a time so I'm editing... then rip the second question out.

4:44 PM
@Alvar looks like it's legal to me, as long as his friend owns the DVD.

@Alvar its reasonable - he doesnt say what he wants to do with the burn- so ok with me.

@jrg so it's legal to burn a dvd of another dvd? :O

jrg
and the post doesn't retain a copy.
@fossfreedom he says he wants to give it back to his friend. or at least, it's implied.

@jrg ok, cool, it's a good question... :)

jrg
so he wants to take the region locked DVD, load it into his computer, rip it, burn it to a non-region locked DVD, and give everything back to his friend so he can watch his SpiderMan Reboots.

4:46 PM
if he says he wants to break a film and burn that to region 0 then not OK - its just a general burning to region 0 - thats ok

jrg
also, so long as it's not obvious warze, breaking DRM is considered "OK" on SE.

@fossfreedom yes he wants to have the DVD disc (copy) region free

A: Is discussion of techniques for removing DRM permitted?

Jeff AtwoodUnless it is a clear call for warez, discussion of DRM should be given the benefit of the doubt. so... yes, yes it is on topic.

@jrg cool

no its not "Therefore, unless the post looks egregiously illegal, assume it is being asked in good faith about removing DRM on things you own, for your own fair use." - he says wants to do this for a friend.

4:51 PM
@fossfreedom It's still personal use imo

remove the friend reference and then on-topic.

I love these kinds of questions because they're so inherently grey
@fossfreedom how's that?

from Jeffs answer - fair own use - that's not his question - wants to burn for a friend.

I would argue that the original post is about removing drm for a friend's property for him to use
(rolled back my revision)

than still not legal - soliciting potential illegality - his friend needs to ask the question.
anyway ... bbl - need to beat the hometime rush-hour.

I don't think you can speculate if it's legal or not. copyright right law is not universal. I'd say its offtopic for askubuntu

@strings I think it's just a software recommendation Q. so I answered it like that.

its really dependant on where the person lives though.
just my take on it.

5:05 PM
Hey guys, I'd like to request some help.
'm trying to install qjoypad (a program that get the input from a gamepad or joystick and translates it into key strokes or mouse actions), and I'm trying to follow this question's answer (askubuntu.com/questions/140617/how-do-i-use-a-gamepad/…)
to compile the program - as it's not available in a deb - but when I run ./configure I get this output "Error: you will need libxtst to compile this program" the problem is that libxtst is already installed, it's name is libxtst6. Also there is no package with just libxtst in its name. Can you help me?

As the meta post says we can't be a police force for every country. We assume good until prove otherwise
@Zignd You're going to need the dev version of that page. sudo apt-get install libxtst-dev should work

@MarcoCeppi do you know any alternative to qjoypad?

I'm sure his intentions are good, however good intentions are not the same as something being legal or not. and that can vary from place to place.

@Zignd nope, I don't use game pads on my desktops
@strings that's up to him to know the laws of his land

Ok thanks

5:07 PM
@MarcoCeppi I agree, but I dont think he does or he would not ask the question.

@strings "Therefore, unless the post looks egregiously illegal, assume it is being asked in good faith about removing DRM on things you own, for your own fair use." I don't know the laws of his country or even what country he lives in.
Fair use is a special kind of clause that gives me warm and fuzzies, I'm pretty familiar with it in the terms of US law and to me this looks like fair use. He's essentially making it so a product his friend purchased will work on that same friends machine.
In my opinion that's fair use, but it's just one giant big 'ol grey area

that's assuming he lives in the US.

Well since the site is operated out the US we are only obligated to uphold US law
We've had a few of these posts in the past, they've all remained opened IIRC. Let me do some hunting

yes, but giving advice to someone say in Canada, based on US law is probably not a good idea. is my main point

It's irrelevant, as a consumer it's up to you and only you to know and understand your rights and local laws

5:12 PM
so based on what you said. if he lived in the US then yes its on topic. if he lives outside the US then I guess its offtopic. see where I'm going here?

No, it's on-topic because we're in the US

@JorgeCastro what you want is to crop the ring, divide the logo and the ring. then place the ring to the left of the logo
... and save the new image

8:38 PM
there's no room to move the ball to the left
I run out of canvas

well move the logo to the right first?

there's like no room to maneuver, I need to be able to grow the background area
ok, so it is called the canvas right? I think that's what I should google for
aha! Canvas Size, it's hidden in plain sight!

@JorgeCastro so you wanted something like that?

nice job @Alvar

perfect!
why's the ball all fuzzy on the outside though?

8:43 PM
@JorgeCastro it's not a prefect job! it's done with much more precision if you do it in illustrator or Photoshop!

isn't there a tool for that?

well, you sized it down I think

BBL

Ok I got it, the canvas size is what I was missing

@JorgeCastro I made it in paint (in windows atm), because Ubuntu crahsed and I haven't time to fix it.
this was more to show if this is what you want..

8:47 PM
@gertvdijk I like the use of ludicrous in your meta ;)

@Oyibo ok cool. I didn't even know this word before today.

yeah its underused, but I'm quite a fan of using unusual words :D
@gertvdijk also you asked if you need a "chat account" to be pinged

yeah I'm now working with this British guy on my new internship. Kinda funny words I'm learning.

all you need is an account on the Stack-Exchange network I think, you can ping anyone and they get notified at the next login
yeah surprisingly vast language considering how easy it is for most people to learn :P

8:55 PM
@mateo_salta so good :D

@mateo_salta lol

classic, look at the room owner war that went on in that room

@mateo_salta well, this changes everything!

@Oyibo but what's the user account name to use in the @ ? I see complicated ones being simplified, but not when the user isn't in the room.
Like @ ObsessiveSSOF with the F upside down.
and it's also not the URL form. that uses dashes (-) to fill spaces, whereas the chat doesn't
